Évangile selon Matthieu 18

JERUSALEM	NEW JERUSALEM
1 A ce moment les disciples s'approchèrent de Jésus et dirent: "Qui donc est le plus grand dans leRoyaume des Cieux?"	1 At this time the disciples came to Jesus and said, 'Who is the greatest in the kingdom of Heaven?'
2 Il appela à lui un petit enfant, le plaça au milieu d'eux	2 So he cal ed a little child to him whom he set among them.
3 et dit: "En vérité je vous le dis, si vous ne retournez à l'état des enfants, vous n'entrerez pas dansle Royaume des Cieux.	3 Then he said, 'In truth I tel you, unless you change and become like little children you wil never enterthe kingdom of Heaven.
4 Qui donc se fera petit comme ce petit enfant-là, celui-là est le plus grand dans le Royaume desCieux.	4 And so, the one who makes himself as little as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of Heaven.
5 "Quiconque accueille un petit enfant tel que lui à cause de mon nom, c'est moi qu'il accueille.	5 'Anyone who welcomes one little child like this in my name welcomes me.
6 Mais si quelqu'un doit scandaliser l'un de ces petits qui croient en moi, il serait préférable pour luide se voir suspendre autour du cou une de ces meules que tournent les ânes et d'être englouti en pleine mer.	6 But anyone who is the downfall of one of these little ones who have faith in me would be betterdrowned in the depths of the sea with a great millstone round his neck.
7 Malheur au monde à cause des scandales! Il est fatal, certes, qu'il arrive des scandales, maismalheur à l'homme par qui le scandale arrive!	7 Alas for the world that there should be such causes of fal ing! Causes of falling indeed there must be,but alas for anyone who provides them!
8 "Si ta main ou ton pied sont pour toi une occasion de péché, coupe-les et jette-les loin de toi:mieux vaut pour toi entrer dans la Vie manchot ou estropié que d'être jeté avec tes deux mains ou tes deux piedsdans le feu éternel.	8 'If your hand or your foot should be your downfal , cut it off and throw it away: it is better for you toenter into life crippled or lame, than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into eternal fire.
9 Et si ton oeil est pour toi une occasion de péché, arrache-le et jette-le loin de toi: mieux vaut pourtoi entrer borgne dans la Vie que d'être jeté avec tes deux yeux dans la géhenne de feu.	9 And if your eye should be your downfal , tear it out and throw it away: it is better for you to enter intolife with one eye, than to have two eyes and be thrown into the hel of fire.
10 "Gardez-vous de mépriser aucun de ces petits: car, je vous le dis, leurs anges aux cieux voientconstamment la face de mon Père qui est aux cieux.	10 'See that you never despise any of these little ones, for I tel you that theirin heaven are continually inthe presence of my Father in heaven.

12 "A votre avis, si un homme possède cent brebis et qu'une d'elles vienne à s'égarer, ne va-t-il paslaisser les 99 autres sur les montagnes pour s'en aller à la recherche de l'égarée?	12 'Tel me. Suppose a man has a hundred sheep and one of them strays; will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hillside and go in search of the stray?
13 Et s'il parvient à la retrouver, en vérité je vous le dis, il tire plus de joie d'elle que des 99 qui nese sont pas égarées.	13 In truth I tel you, if he finds it, it gives him more joy than do the ninety-nine that did not stray at al .
14 Ainsi on ne veut pas, chez votre Père qui est aux cieux, qu'un seul de ces petits se perde.	14 Similarly, it is never the will of your Father in heaven that one of these little ones should be lost.
15 "Si ton frère vient à pécher, va le trouver et reprends-le, seul à seul. S'il t'écoute, tu auras gagnéton frère.	15 'If your brother does something wrong, go and have it out with him alone, between your two selves. Ifhe listens to you, you have won back your brother.
16 S'il n'écoute pas, prends encore avec toi un ou deux autres, pour que toute affaire soit décidéesur la parole de deux ou trois témoins.	16 If he does not listen, take one or two others along with you: whatever the misdemeanour, theevidence of two or three witnesses is required to sustain the charge.
17 Que s'il refuse de les écouter, dis-le à la communauté. Et s'il refuse d'écouter même lacommunauté, qu'il soit pour toi comme le païen et le publicain.	17 But if he refuses to listen to these, report it to the community; and if he refuses to listen to thecommunity, treat him like a gentile or a tax col ector.
18 "En vérité je vous le dis: tout ce que vous lierez sur la terre sera tenu au ciel pour lié, et tout ceque vous délierez sur la terre sera tenu au ciel pour délié.	18 'In truth I tel you, whatever you bind on earth wil be bound in heaven; whatever you loose on earthwil be loosed in heaven.
19 "De même, je vous le dis en vérité, si deux d'entre vous, sur la terre, unissent leurs voix pourdemander quoi que ce soit, cela leur sera accordé par mon Père qui est aux cieux.	19 'In truth I tel you once again, if two of you on earth agree to ask anything at al , it wil be granted toyou by my Father in heaven.
20 Que deux ou trois, en effet, soient réunis en mon nom, je suis là au milieu d'eux."	20 For where two or three meet in my name, I am there among them.'
21 Alors Pierre, s'avançant, lui dit: "Seigneur, combien de fois mon frère pourra-t-il pécher contremoi et devrai-je lui pardonner? Irai-je jusqu'à sept fois?"	21 Then Peter went up to him and said, 'Lord, how often must I forgive my brother if he wrongs me? Asoften as seven times?'
22 Jésus lui dit: "Je ne te dis pas jusqu'à sept fois, mais jusqu'à 77 fois.	22 Jesus answered, 'Not seven, I tel you, but seventy-seven times.
23 "A ce propos, il en va du Royaume des Cieux comme d'un roi qui voulut régler ses comptesavec ses serviteurs.	23 'And so the kingdom of Heaven may be compared to a king who decided to settle his accounts withhis servants.
24 L'opération commencée, on lui en amena un qui devait 10.000 talents.	24 When the reckoning began, they brought him a man who owed ten thousand talents;
25 Cet homme n'ayant pas de quoi rendre, le maître donna l'ordre de le vendre, avec sa femme, sesenfants et tous ses biens, et d'éteindre ainsi la dette.	25 he had no means of paying, so his master gave orders that he should be sold, together with his wifeand children and al his possessions, to meet the debt.
26 Le serviteur alors se jeta à ses pieds et il s'y tenait prosterné en disant: Consens-moi un délai, etje te rendrai tout.	26 At this, the servant threw himself down at his master's feet, with the words, "Be patient with me and Iwil pay the whole sum."
27 Apitoyé, le maître de ce serviteur le relâcha et lui fit remise de sa dette.	27 And the servant's master felt so sorry for him that he let him go and cancel ed the debt.
28 En sortant, ce serviteur rencontra un de ses compagnons, qui lui devait cent deniers; il le prit à lagorge et le serrait à l'étrangler, en lui disant: Rends tout ce que tu dois.	28 Now as this servant went out, he happened to meet a fel ow-servant who owed him one hundreddenari ; and he seized him by the throat and began to throttle him, saying, "Pay what you owe me."
29 Son compagnon alors se jeta à ses pieds et il le suppliait en disant: Consens-moi un délai, et je terendrai.	29 His fel ow-servant fell at his feet and appealed to him, saying, "Be patient with me and I wil pay you."
30 Mais l'autre n'y consentit pas; au contraire, il s'en alla le faire jeter en prison, en attendant qu'ileût remboursé son dû.	30 But the other would not agree; on the contrary, he had him thrown into prison til he should pay thedebt.
31 Voyant ce qui s'était passé, ses compagnons en furent navrés, et ils allèrent raconter toutel'affaire à leur maître.	31 His fel ow-servants were deeply distressed when they saw what had happened, and they went totheir master and reported the whole affair to him.
32 Alors celui-ci le fit venir et lui dit: Serviteur méchant, toute cette somme que tu me devais, jet'en ai fait remise, parce que tu m'as supplié;	32 Then the master sent for the man and said to him, "You wicked servant, I cancelled all that debt ofyours when you appealed to me.
33 ne devais-tu pas, toi aussi, avoir pitié de ton compagnon comme moi j'ai eu pitié de toi?	33 Were you not bound, then, to have pity on your fellow-servant just as I had pity on you?"
34 Et dans son courroux son maître le livra aux tortionnaires, jusqu'à ce qu'il eût remboursé toutson dû.	34 And in his anger the master handed him over to the torturers til he should pay al his debt.
35 C'est ainsi que vous traitera aussi mon Père céleste, si chacun de vous ne pardonne pas à sonfrère du fond du coeur."	35 And that is how my heavenly Father wil deal with you unless you each forgive your brother from yourheart.'
