1 Et il advint, quand Jésus eut achevé de donner ces consignes à ses douze disciples, qu'il partit delà pour enseigner et prêcher dans leurs villes.	1 And it came to pass, when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and to preach in their cities.
2 Or Jean, dans sa prison, avait entendu parler des oeuvres du Christ. Il lui envoya de ses disciplespour lui dire:	2 Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples,
3 "Es-tu celui qui doit venir ou devons-nous en attendre un autre?"	3 And said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?
4 Jésus leur répondit: "Allez rapporter à Jean ce que vous entendez et voyez:	4 Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see:
5 les aveugles voient et les boiteux marchent, les lépreux sont purifiés et les sourds entendent, lesmorts ressuscitent et la Bonne Nouvelle est annoncée aux pauvres;	5 The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.
6 et heureux celui qui ne trébuchera pas à cause de moi!"	6 And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.
7 Tandis que ceux-là s'en allaient, Jésus se mit à dire aux foules au sujet de Jean: "Qu'êtes-vousallés contempler au désert? Un roseau agité par le vent?	7 And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind?
8 Alors qu'êtes-vous allés voir? Un homme vêtu de façon délicate? Mais ceux qui portent des habitsdélicats se trouvent dans les demeures des rois.	8 But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings' houses.
9 Alors qu'êtes-vous allés faire? Voir un prophète? Oui, je vous le dis, et plus qu'un prophète.	9 But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet.
10 C'est celui dont il est écrit: Voici que moi j'envoie mon messager en avant de toi pour préparerta route devant toi.	10 For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.
11 "En vérité je vous le dis, parmi les enfants des femmes, il n'en a pas surgi de plus grand que Jeanle Baptiste; et cependant le plus petit dans le Royaume des Cieux est plus grand que lui.	11 Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
12 Depuis les jours de Jean le Baptiste jusqu'à présent le Royaume des Cieux souffre violence, etdes violents s'en emparent.	12 And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.
13 Tous les prophètes en effet, ainsi que la Loi, ont mené leurs prophéties jusqu'à Jean.	13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.
14 Et lui, si vous voulez m'en croire, il est cet Elie qui doit revenir.	14 And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come.
15 Que celui qui a des oreilles entende!	15 He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
16 "Mais à qui vais-je comparer cette génération? Elle ressemble à des gamins qui, assis sur lesplaces, en interpellent d'autres,	16 But whereunto shall I liken this generation? It is like unto children sitting in the markets, and calling unto their fellows,
17 en disant: Nous vous avons joué de la flûte, et vous n'avez pas dansé! Nous avons entonné unchant funèbre, et vous ne vous êtes pas frappé la poitrine!	17 And saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented.
18 Jean vient en effet, ne mangeant ni ne buvant, et l'on dit: Il est possédé!	18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a devil.
19 Vient le Fils de l'homme, mangeant et buvant, et l'on dit: Voilà un glouton et un ivrogne, un amides publicains et des pécheurs! Et justice a été rendue à la Sagesse par ses oeuvres."	19 The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children.
20 Alors il se mit à invectiver contre les villes qui avaient vu ses plus nombreux miracles maisn'avaient pas fait pénitence.	20 Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not:
21 "Malheur à toi, Chorazeïn! Malheur à toi, Bethsaïde! Car si les miracles qui ont eu lieu chezvous avaient eu lieu à Tyr et à Sidon, il y a longtemps que, sous le sac et dans la cendre, elles se seraientrepenties.	21 Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
22 Aussi bien, je vous le dis, pour Tyr et Sidon, au Jour du Jugement, il y aura moins de rigueurque pour vous.	22 But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you.
23 Et toi, Capharnaüm, crois-tu que tu seras élevée jusqu'au ciel? Jusqu'à l'Hadès tu descendras.Car si les miracles qui ont eu lieu chez toi avaient eu lieu à Sodome, elle subsisterait encore aujourd'hui.	23 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.
24 Aussi bien, je vous le dis, pour le pays de Sodome il y aura moins de rigueur, au Jour duJugement, que pour toi."	24 But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.
25 En ce temps-là Jésus prit la parole et dit: "Je te bénis, Père, Seigneur du ciel et de la terre,d'avoir caché cela aux sages et aux intelligents et de l'avoir révélé aux tout-petits.	25 At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.
26 Oui, Père, car tel a été ton bon plaisir.	26 Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight.
27 Tout m'a été remis par mon Père, et nul ne connaît le Fils si ce n'est le Père, et nul ne connaît lePère si ce n'est le Fils, et celui à qui le Fils veut bien le révéler.	27 All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.
28 "Venez à moi, vous tous qui peinez et ployez sous le fardeau, et moi je vous soulagerai.	28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
29 Chargez-vous de mon joug et mettez-vous à mon école, car je suis doux et humble de coeur, etvous trouverez soulagement pour vos âmes.	29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
30 Oui, mon joug est aisé et mon fardeau léger."	30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
