JERUSALEM	NEW JERUSALEM
1 et Darius le Mède reçut le royaume, étant âgé déjà de 62 ans.	1 and Darius the Mede received the kingdom, at the age of sixty-two.
2 Il plut à Darius d'établir sur son royaume 120 satrapes pour tout le royaume,	2 It pleased Darius to appoint a hundred and twenty satraps over his kingdom for the various parts,
3 sous la présidence de trois chefs - Daniel en était un - auxquels les satrapes auraient à rendre compte.Ceci afin d'empêcher qu'un tort fût fait au roi.	3 and over them three presidents -- of whom Daniel was one -- to whom the satraps were to beresponsible. This was to safeguard the king's interests.
4 Ce même Daniel l'emportait si bien sur les chefs et les satrapes parce qu'il avait en lui un espritextraordinaire, que le roi se proposait de le placer à la tête du royaume tout entier.	4 This Daniel, by virtue of the marvel ous spirit residing in him, was so evidently superior to the otherpresidents and satraps that the king considered appointing him to rule the whole kingdom.
5 Alors les chefs et les satrapes se mirent en quête d'une affaire d'Etat qui pût faire du tort à Daniel;mais ils ne purent trouver d'affaire ou de manquement tant il était fidèle, et on ne trouvait à lui reprocher ninégligence ni manquement.	5 The presidents and satraps, in consequence, started hunting for some affair of state by which theycould discredit Daniel; but they could find nothing to his discredit, and no case of negligence; he was sopunctilious that they could not find a single instance of maladministration or neglect.
6 Ces hommes se dirent donc: "Faute d'affaire au préjudice de ce Daniel, trouvons-en une contre lui àpropos de la religion de son Dieu."	6 These men then thought, 'We shal never find a way of discrediting Daniel unless we try something todo with the law of his God.'
7 Chefs et satrapes s'en vinrent donc en nombre auprès du roi et lui parlèrent ainsi: "O roi Darius, vis àjamais!	7 The presidents and satraps then went in a body to the king. 'King Darius,' they said, 'live for ever!
8 Chefs du royaume, magistrats, satrapes, ministres et gouverneurs, nous sommes tous d'avis que le roidevrait rendre un édit pour donner vigueur à l'interdit suivant: tout homme qui, au cours des 30 jours à venir,adressera une prière à quiconque, dieu ou homme, autre que toi, ô roi, sera jeté à la fosse aux lions.	8 We are all agreed, presidents of the realm, magistrates, satraps, councillors and governors, that theking should issue an edict enforcing the fol owing regulation: Whoever within the next thirty days prays toanyone, divine or human, other than to yourself, Your Majesty, is to be thrown into the lions' den.
9 O roi, donne à présent force de loi à cet interdit en signant cet acte, en sorte qu'on n'y change rien,selon la loi des Mèdes et des Perses, laquelle ne passe point."	9 Your Majesty, ratify the edict at once by signing this document, making it unalterable, as befits the lawof the Medes and the Persians, which cannot be revoked.'
10 En raison de quoi, le roi Darius signa l'acte d'interdit.	10 King Darius accordingly signed the document embodying the edict.
11 Apprenant que l'acte avait été signé, Daniel monta dans sa maison. Les fenêtres de sa chambrehaute étaient orientées vers Jérusalem, et trois fois par jour il se mettait à genoux, priant et confessant Dieu; c'estainsi qu'il avait toujours fait.	11 When Daniel heard that the document had been signed, he retired to his house. The windows of hisupstairs room faced towards Jerusalem. Three times each day, he went down on his knees, praying and givingpraise to God as he had always done.
12 Ces hommes s'en vinrent en nombre et trouvèrent Daniel qui suppliait et implorait Dieu.	12 These men came along in a body and found Daniel praying and pleading with God.
13 Alors ils s'introduisirent auprès du roi et lui rappelèrent l'interdit royal: "N'as-tu pas signé l'interditselon lequel tout homme qui, dans les 30 jours, adresserait une prière à quiconque, dieu ou homme, autre que toi,ô roi, serait jeté dans la fosse aux lions?" Le roi répondit: "La chose est tranchée définitivement, selon la loi desMèdes et des Perses, laquelle ne passe point."	13 They then went to the king and reminded him of the royal edict, 'Have you not signed an edictforbidding anyone for the next thirty days to pray to anyone, divine or human, other than to yourself, YourMajesty, on pain of being thrown into the lions' den?' 'The decision stands', the king replied, 'as befits the law ofthe Medes and the Persians, which cannot be revoked.'
14 Sur quoi, ils dirent au roi: "Daniel, cet homme d'entre les gens de la déportation de Juda, n'a cure detoi, ô roi, ni de l'interdit que tu as signé: trois fois par jour il s'acquitte de sa prière."	14 They then said to the king, 'Your Majesty, this man Daniel, one of the exiles from Judah, disregardsboth you and the edict which you have signed: he is at his prayers three times each day.'
15 En entendant ces mots, le roi éprouva une grande douleur et résolut de sauver Daniel. Jusqu'aucoucher du soleil, il s'ingénia à lui trouver une échappatoire.	15 When the king heard these words he was deeply distressed and determined to save Daniel; he rackedhis brains until sunset to find some way to save him.
16 Mais ces hommes s'empressèrent auprès du roi en disant: "Sache, ô roi, que selon la loi des Mèdeset des Perses aucun interdit ou édit porté par le roi ne peut être révoqué."	16 But the men kept pressing the king, 'Your Majesty, remember that in conformity with the law of theMedes and the Persians, no edict or decree can be altered when once issued by the king.'
17 Alors, le roi donna ordre de faire venir Daniel et de le jeter dans la fosse aux lions. Le roi dit àDaniel: "Ton Dieu, que tu as servi avec persévérance, c'est lui qui te sauvera."	17 The king then ordered Daniel to be brought and thrown into the lion pit. The king said to Daniel, 'YourGod, whom you have served so faithful y, wil have to save you.'
18 On apporta une pierre qu'on posa sur l'entrée de la fosse, et le roi y apposa son sceau et celui de sesseigneurs, en sorte que rien ne pût être modifié de ce qui concernait Daniel.	18 A stone was then brought and laid over the mouth of the pit; and the king sealed it with his own signetand with that of his noblemen, so that there could be no going back on the original decision about Daniel.
19 Le roi rentra dans son palais, passa la nuit à jeûner et ne se laissa pas amener de concubines. Lesommeil le fuit	19 The king returned to his palace, spent the night in fasting and refused to receive any of hisconcubines. Sleep eluded him,
20 et dès l'aube, au petit jour, le roi se leva et se rendit en hâte à la fosse aux lions.	20 and at the first sign of dawn he got up and hurried to the lion pit.
21 S'approchant de la fosse, il cria à Daniel d'une voix angoissée: "Daniel, serviteur du Dieu vivant, ceDieu que tu sers avec persévérance a-t-il pu te faire échapper aux lions?"	21 As he approached the pit he cal ed in anguished tones to Daniel, 'Daniel, servant of the living God!Has your God, whom you serve so faithful y, been able to save you from the lions?'
22 Daniel répondit au roi: "O roi, vis à jamais!	22 Daniel answered the king, 'May Your Majesty live for ever!
23 Mon Dieu a envoyé son ange, il a fermé la gueule des lions et ils ne m'ont pas fait de mal, parce quej'ai été trouvé innocent devant lui. Et devant toi aussi, ô roi, je suis sans faute."	23 My God sent his angel who sealed the lions' jaws; they did me no harm, since in his sight I amblameless; neither have I ever done you any wrong, Your Majesty.'
24 Le roi éprouva une grande joie et ordonna de faire sortir Daniel de la fosse. On fit sortir Daniel de lafosse et on le trouva indemne, parce qu'il avait eu foi en son Dieu.	24 The king was overjoyed and ordered Daniel to be released from the pit. Daniel was released from thepit and found to be quite unhurt, because he had trusted in his God.
25 Le roi manda ces hommes qui avaient calomnié Daniel et les fit jeter dans la fosse aux lions, eux,leurs enfants et leurs femmes: et avant même qu'ils eussent atteint le fond de la fosse, les lions s'étaient emparésd'eux et leur avaient broyé les os.	25 The king then sent for the men who had accused Daniel and had them thrown into the lion pit, andtheir wives and children too; and before they reached the floor of the pit the lions had seized them and crushedtheir bones to pieces.
26 Et le roi Darius écrivit à tous peuples, nations et langues qui habitent sur toute la terre: "Abondancede paix sur vous!	26 King Darius then wrote to al nations, peoples and languages dwel ing throughout the world: 'May youprosper more and more!
27 Voici le décret que je porte: dans tout le domaine de mon royaume, que les gens tremblent etfrémissent devant le Dieu de Daniel: il est le Dieu vivant, il perdure à jamais, - son royaume ne sera point détruitet son empire n'aura point de fin --	27 This is my decree: Throughout every dominion of my realm, let al tremble with fear before the God ofDaniel: He is the living God, he endures for ever, his kingdom wil never be destroyed and his empire nevercome to an end.
28 il sauve et délivre, opère signes et merveilles aux cieux et sur la terre; il a sauvé Daniel du pouvoirdes lions."	28 He saves, sets free, and works signs and wonders in the heavens and on earth; he has saved Danielfrom the power of the lions.'
29 Ce même Daniel fleurit sous le règne de Darius et sous le règne de Cyrus le Perse.	29 This Daniel flourished in the reign of Darius and the reign of Cyrus the Persian.
