Livre de Daniel 1

JERUSALEM	NEW JERUSALEM
1 En l'an trois du règne de Joiaqim, roi de Juda, Nabuchodonosor, roi de Babylone, s'en vint à Jérusalem etl'investit.	1 In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched onJerusalem and besieged it.
2 Le Seigneur livra entre ses mains Joiaqim, roi de Juda, ainsi qu'une partie des objets du Temple deDieu. Il les emmena au pays de Shinéar et déposa les objets dans le trésor de ses dieux.	2 The Lord let Jehoiakim king of Judah fal into his power, as well as some of the vessels belonging to theTemple of God. These he took away to Shinar, putting the vessels into the treasury of his own gods.
3 Le roi dit à Ashpenaz, chef de ses eunuques, de prendre d'entre les gens d'Israël quelques enfants derace royale ou de grande famille:	3 From the Israelites, the king ordered Ashpenaz, his chief eunuch, to bring a certain number of boys ofroyal or noble descent;
4 ils devaient être sans tare, de belle apparence, instruits en toute sagesse, savants en science et subtilsen savoir, aptes à se tenir à la cour du roi; Ashpenaz leur enseignerait les lettres et la langue des Chaldéens.	4 they had to be without any physical defect, of good appearance, versed in every branch of wisdom,wel -informed, discerning, suitable for service at the royal court. Ashpenaz was to teach them to speak and writethe language of the Chaldaeans.
5 Le roi leur assignait une portion journalière des mets du roi et du vin de sa table. Ils seraient éduquéspendant trois ans; après quoi, ils auraient à se tenir devant le roi.	5 The king assigned them a daily allowance of food and wine from the royal table. They were to receive an education lasting for three years, after which they would enter the royal service.
6 Parmi eux se trouvaient Daniel, Ananias, Misaël et Azarias, qui étaient des Judéens.	6 Among them were the Judaeans Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah.
7 Le chef des eunuques leur imposa des noms: Daniel s'appellerait Baltassar, Ananias Shadrak, MisaëlMéshak, et Azarias Abed-Nego.	7 The chief eunuch gave them other names, cal ing Daniel Belteshazzar, Hananiah Shadrach, MishaelMeshach, and Azariah Abed-Nego.
8 Daniel, ayant à coeur de ne pas se souiller en prenant part aux mets du roi et au vin de sa table,supplia le chef des eunuques de lui épargner cette souillure.	8 Daniel, who was determined not to incur pol ution by food and wine from the royal table, begged thechief eunuch to spare him this defilement.
9 Dieu accorda à Daniel de trouver auprès du chef des eunuques grâce et miséricorde.	9 God al owed Daniel to receive faithful love and sympathy from the chief eunuch.
10 Mais le chef des eunuques dit à Daniel: "Je redoute Monseigneur le roi; il vous a assigné chère etboisson et, s'il vous voit le visage émacié plus que les enfants de votre âge, c'est moi qui, à cause de vous, seraicoupable aux yeux du roi."	10 But the eunuch warned Daniel, 'I am afraid of my lord the king: he has assigned you food and drink,and if he sees you looking thinner in the face than the other boys of your age, my head wil be in danger with theking because of you.'
11 Daniel dit alors au garde que le chef des eunuques avait assigné à Daniel, Ananias, Misaël etAzarias:	11 To the guard assigned to Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah by the chief eunuch, Daniel thensaid,
12 "Je t'en prie, mets tes serviteurs à l'épreuve pendant dix jours: qu'on nous donne des légumes àmanger et de l'eau à boire.	12 'Please al ow your servants a ten days' trial, during which we are given only vegetables to eat andwater to drink.
13 Tu verras notre mine et la mine des enfants qui mangent des mets du roi, et tu feras de tes serviteursselon ce que tu auras vu."	13 You can then compare our looks with those of the boys who eat the king's food; go by what you see,and treat your servants accordingly.'
14 Il consentit à ce qu'ils lui demandaient et les mit à l'épreuve pendant dix jours.	14 The man agreed to do what they asked and put them on ten days' trial.
15 Au bout de dix jours, ils avaient bonne mine et ils avaient grossi plus que tous les enfants quimangeaient des mets du roi.	15 When the ten days were over, they looked better and fatter than any of the boys who had eaten theiral owance from the royal table;
16 Dès lors, le garde supprima leurs mets et la portion de vin qu'ils avaient à boire et leur donna deslégumes.	16 so the guard withdrew their al owance of food and the wine they were to drink, and gave themvegetables.
17 A ces quatre enfants Dieu donna savoir et instruction en matière de lettres et en sagesse. Daniel, lui,possédait le discernement des visions et des songes.	17 To these four boys God gave knowledge and skil in every aspect of literature and learning; Danielalso had the gift of interpreting every kind of vision and dream.
18 Au terme fixé par le roi pour qu'on les lui amenât, le chef des eunuques les conduisit devantNabuchodonosor.	18 When the time stipulated by the king for the boys to be presented to him came round, the chiefeunuch presented them to Nebuchadnezzar.
19 Le roi s'entretint avec eux, et dans le nombre il ne s'en trouva pas tels que Daniel, Ananias, Misaëlet Azarias. Ils se tinrent donc devant le roi	19 The king conversed with them, and among all the boys found none to equal Daniel, Hananiah, Mishaeland Azariah. So they became members of the king's court,
20 et, sur quelque point de sagesse ou de prudence qu'il les interrogeât, le roi les trouvait dix foissupérieurs à tous les magiciens et devins de son royaume tout entier.	20 and on whatever point of wisdom or understanding he might question them, he found them ten timesbetter than all the magicians and soothsayers in his entire kingdom. Daniel remained there until the first year ofKing Cyrus.
21 Daniel demeura là jusqu'en l'an un du roi Cyrus.
