JERUSALEM	KING JAMES BIBLE
1 En ces mêmes jours, Judith fut informée de ces faits. Elle était fille de Merari, fils d'Ox, fils deJoseph, fils d'Oziel, fils d'Elkia, fils d'Ananias, fils de Gédéon, fils de Raphen, fils d'Achitob, fils d'Elias, filsd'Helkias, fils d'Eliab, fils de Nathanaël, fils de Salamiel, fils de Sarasadé, fils d'Israël.	1 Now at that time Judith heard thereof, which was the daughter of Merari, the son of Ox, the son of Joseph, the son of Ozel, the son of Elcia, the son of Ananias, the son of Gedeon, the son of Raphaim, the son of Acitho, the son of Eliu, the son of Eliab, the son of Nathanael, the son of Samael, the son of Salasadal, the son of Israel.
2 Son mari, Manassé, de même tribu et de même famille, était mort à l'époque de la moisson des orges.	2 And Manasses was her husband, of her tribe and kindred, who died in the barley harvest.
3 Il surveillait les lieurs de gerbes dans les champs quand, frappé d'insolation, il dut s'aliter et mourutdans sa ville, à Béthulie, où on l'ensevelit avec ses pères dans le champ situé entre Dotaïn et Balamôn.	3 For as he stood overseeing them that bound sheaves in the field, the heat came upon his head, and he fell on his bed, and died in the city of Bethulia: and they buried him with his fathers in the field between Dothaim and Balamo.
4 Devenue veuve, Judith vécut en sa maison durant trois ans et quatre mois.	4 So Judith was a widow in her house three years and four months.
5 Sur la terrasse elle s'était aménagé une chambre haute. Elle portait un sac sur les reins, se vêtaitd'habits de deuil	5 And she made her a tent upon the top of her house, and put on sackcloth upon her loins and ware her widow's apparel.
6 et jeûnait tous les jours de son veuvage, hormis les veilles de sabbat, les sabbats, les veilles denéoménies, les néoménies, ainsi que les jours de fête et de liesse de la maison d'Israël.	6 And she fasted all the days of her widowhood, save the eves of the sabbaths, and the sabbaths, and the eves of the new moons, and the new moons and the feasts and solemn days of the house of Israel.
7 Or elle était très belle et d'aspect charmant. Son mari Manassé lui avait laissé de l'or, de l'argent, desserviteurs, des servantes, des troupeaux et des champs, et elle habitait au milieu de tous ses biens	7 She was also of a goodly countenance, and very beautiful to behold: and her husband Manasses had left her gold, and silver, and menservants and maidservants, and cattle, and lands; and she remained upon them.
8 sans que personne eût rien à lui reprocher, car elle craignait Dieu grandement.	8 And there was none that gave her an ill word; ar she feared God greatly.
9 Elle apprit donc que le peuple, découragé par la pénurie d'eau, avait murmuré contre le chef de la cité.Elle sut aussi tout ce qu'Ozias leur avait dit et comment il leur avait juré de livrer la ville aux Assyriens au boutde cinq jours.	9 Now when she heard the evil words of the people against the governor, that they fainted for lack of water; for Judith had heard all the words that Ozias had spoken unto them, and that he had sworn to deliver the city unto the Assyrians after five days;
10 Alors elle envoya la servante préposée à tous ses biens appeler Chabris et Charmis, anciens de laville.	10 Then she sent her waitingwoman, that had the government of all things that she had, to call Ozias and Chabris and Charmis, the ancients of the city.
11 Quand ils furent chez elle, elle leur dit: "Ecoutez-moi, chefs des habitants de Béthulie. Vraimentvous avez eu tort de parler aujourd'hui comme vous l'avez fait devant le peuple et de vous engager contre Dieu,en faisant serment de livrer la ville à nos ennemis si le Seigneur ne vous portait secours dans le délai fixé!	11 And they came unto her, and she said unto them, Hear me now, O ye governors of the inhabitants of Bethulia: for your words that ye have spoken before the people this day are not right, touching this oath which ye made and pronounced between God and you, and have promised to deliver the city to our enemies, unless within these days the Lord turn to help you.
12 Allons! Qui donc êtes-vous pour tenter Dieu en ce jour et pour vous dresser au-dessus de lui parmiles enfants des hommes?	12 And now who are ye that have tempted God this day, and stand instead of God among the children of men?
13 Et maintenant vous mettez le Seigneur Tout-Puissant à l'épreuve! Vous ne comprendrez donc rien augrand jamais!	13 And now try the Lord Almighty, but ye shall never know any thing.
14 Si vous êtes incapables de scruter les profondeurs du coeur de l'homme et de démêler lesraisonnements de son esprit, comment donc pourrez-vous pénétrer le Dieu qui a fait toutes ces choses, scruter sapensée et comprendre ses desseins? Non, frères, gardez-vous d'irriter le Seigneur notre Dieu!	14 For ye cannot find the depth of the heart of man, neither can ye perceive the things that he thinketh: then how can ye search out God, that hath made all these things, and know his mind, or comprehend his purpose? Nay, my brethren, provoke not the Lord our God to anger.
15 S'il n'est pas dans ses intentions de nous sauver avant cette échéance de cinq jours, il peut nousprotéger dans le délai qu'il voudra, comme il peut nous détruire à la face de nos ennemis.	15 For if he will not help us within these five days, he hath power to defend us when he will, even every day, or to destroy us before our enemies.
16 Mais vous, n'exigez pas de garanties envers les desseins du Seigneur notre Dieu. Car on ne met pasDieu au pied du mur comme un homme, on ne lui fait pas de sommations comme à un fils d'homme.	16 Do not bind the counsels of the Lord our God: for God is not as man, that he may be threatened; neither is he as the son of man, that he should be wavering.
17 Dans l'attente patiente de son salut, appelons-le plutôt à notre secours. Il écoutera notre voix si tel estson bon plaisir.	17 Therefore let us wait for salvation of him, and call upon him to help us, and he will hear our voice, if it please him.
18 A vrai dire, il ne s'est trouvé, naguère pas plus qu'aujourd'hui, ni une de nos tribus, ni une de nosfamilles, ni un de nos bourgs, ni une de nos cités qui se soit prosterné devant des dieux faits de main d'homme,comme cela s'est produit jadis,	18 For there arose none in our age, neither is there any now in these days neither tribe, nor family, nor people, nor city among us, which worship gods made with hands, as hath been aforetime.
19 ce qui fut cause que nos pères furent livrés à l'épée et au pillage et succombèrent misérablementdevant leurs ennemis.	19 For the which cause our fathers were given to the sword, and for a spoil, and had a great fall before our enemies.
20 Mais nous, nous ne connaissons pas d'autre Dieu que Lui. Aussi pouvons-nous espérer qu'il ne nousregardera pas avec dédain et ne se détournera pas de notre race.	20 But we know none other god, therefore we trust that he will not dispise us, nor any of our nation.
21 Si en effet on s'empare de nous, comme vous l'envisagez, toute la Judée aussi sera prise et nos lieuxsaints pillés. Notre sang devra alors répondre de leur profanation.	21 For if we be taken so, all Judea shall lie waste, and our sanctuary shall be spoiled; and he will require the profanation thereof at our mouth.
22 Le meurtre de nos frères, la déportation du pays, le dépeuplement de notre héritage retomberont surnos têtes parmi les nations dont nous serons devenus les esclaves et nous serons alors pour nos nouveaux maîtresun scandale et une honte,	22 And the slaughter of our brethren, and the captivity of the country, and the desolation of our inheritance, will he turn upon our heads among the Gentiles, wheresoever we shall be in bondage; and we shall be an offence and a reproach to all them that possess us.
23 car notre servitude n'aboutira pas à un retour en grâce, mais le Seigneur notre Dieu en fera unepunition infamante.	23 For our servitude shall not be directed to favour: but the Lord our God shall turn it to dishonour.
24 Et maintenant, frères, mettons-nous en avant pour nos frères, car leur vie dépend de nous, et lesanctuaire, le Temple et l'autel reposent sur nous.	24 Now therefore, O brethren, let us shew an example to our brethren, because their hearts depend upon us, and the sanctuary, and the house, and the altar, rest upon us.
25 Pour toutes ces raisons, rendons plutôt grâces au Seigneur notre Dieu qui nous met à l'épreuve, toutcomme nos pères.	25 Moreover let us give thanks to the Lord our God, which trieth us, even as he did our fathers.
26 Rappelez-vous tout ce qu'il a fait à Abraham, toutes les épreuves d'Isaac, tout ce qui arriva à Jacoben Mésopotamie de Syrie alors qu'il gardait les brebis de Laban, son oncle maternel.	26 Remember what things he did to Abraham, and how he tried Isaac, and what happened to Jacob in Mesopotamia of Syria, when he kept the sheep of Laban his mother's brother.
27 Comme il les éprouva pour scruter leur coeur, de même ce n'est pas une vengeance que Dieu tire denous, mais c'est plutôt un avertissement dont le Seigneur frappe ceux qui le touchent de près."	27 For he hath not tried us in the fire, as he did them, for the examination of their hearts, neither hath he taken vengeance on us: but the Lord doth scourge them that come near unto him, to admonish them.
28 Ozias lui répondit: "Tout ce que tu viens de dire, tu l'as dit dans un excellent esprit et personne n'ycontredira.	28 Then said Ozias to her, All that thou hast spoken hast thou spoken with a good heart, and there is none that may gainsay thy words.
29 Bien sûr, ce n'est pas d'aujourd'hui que se manifeste ta sagesse. Dès ta prime jeunesse le peuple toutentier a reconnu ton intelligence tout comme l'excellence foncière de ton coeur.	29 For this is not the first day wherein thy wisdom is manifested; but from the beginning of thy days all the people have known thy understanding, because the disposition of thine heart is good.
30 Mais les gens avaient tellement soif! Ils nous ont contraints de faire ce que nous leur avions promiset de nous y engager par un serment irrévocable.	30 But the people were very thirsty, and compelled us to do unto them as we have spoken, and to bring an oath upon ourselves, which we will not break.
31 Et maintenant, puisque tu es une femme pieuse, prie le Seigneur de nous envoyer une averse quiremplisse nos citernes afin que nous ne soyons plus épuisés" --	31 Therefore now pray thou for us, because thou art a godly woman, and the Lord will send us rain to fill our cisterns, and we shall faint no more.
32 "Ecoutez-moi bien, leur répondit Judith. Je vais accomplir une action dont le souvenir se transmettraaux enfants de notre race d'âge en âge.	32 Then said Judith unto them, Hear me, and I will do a thing, which shall go throughout all generations to the children of our nation.
33 Vous, trouvez-vous cette nuit à la porte de la ville. Moi, je sortirai avec ma servante et, avant la dateoù vous aviez pensé livrer la ville à nos ennemis, par mon entremise le Seigneur visitera Israël.	33 Ye shall stand this night in the gate, and I will go forth with my waitingwoman: and within the days that ye have promised to deliver the city to our enemies the Lord will visit Israel by mine hand.
34 Quant à vous, ne cherchez pas à connaître ce que je vais faire. Je ne vous le dirai pas avant de l'avoirexécuté" --	34 But enquire not ye of mine act: for I will not declare it unto you, till the things be finished that I do.
35 "Va en paix! lui dirent Ozias et les chefs. Que le Seigneur Dieu te conduise pour tirer vengeance denos ennemis!"	35 Then said Ozias and the princes unto her, Go in peace, and the Lord God be before thee, to take vengeance on our enemies.
36 Et, quittant la chambre haute, ils rejoignirent leurs postes.	36 So they returned from the tent, and went to their wards.
