JERUSALEM	NEW AMERICAN BIBLE
1 En ce temps-là, on lut au peuple dans le livre de Moïse et l'on y trouva écrit: "L'Ammonite et leMoabite ne seront pas admis à l'assemblée de Dieu, et cela pour toujours,	1 At that time, when there was reading from the book of Moses in the hearing of the people, it was found written there that "no Ammonite or Moabite may ever be admitted into the assembly of God;
2 car ils ne sont pas venus à la rencontre des Israélites avec le pain et l'eau. Ils soudoyèrent contreeux Balaam, pour les maudire, mais notre Dieu changea la malédiction en bénédiction."	2 for they would not succor the Israelites with food and water, but they hired Balaam to curse them, though our God turned the curse into a blessing."
3 Dès qu'on eut entendu la Loi, on exclut d'Israël tout élément étranger.	3 When they had heard the law, they separated from Israel every foreign element.
4 Mais auparavant, le prêtre Elyashib avait été préposé aux salles du Temple de notre Dieu. Lié àTobiyya,	4 Before this, the priest Eliashib, who had been placed in charge of the chambers of the house of our God and who was an associate of Tobiah,
5 il lui avait aménagé une salle spacieuse, où l'on plaçait précédemment les offrandes, l'encens, lesustensiles, la dîme du blé, du vin et de l'huile, c'est-à-dire les parts des lévites, des chantres et des portiers et cequ'on prélevait pour les prêtres.	5 had set aside for the latter's use a large chamber in which had previously been stored the cereal offerings, incense and utensils, the tithes in grain, wine, and oil allotted to the Levites, singers, and gatekeepers, and the offerings due the priests.
6 J'étais, durant tout cela, absent de Jérusalem, car dans la trente-deuxième année d'Artaxerxès, roide Babylone, j'étais parti auprès du roi; mais, au bout d'un certain temps, je demandai au roi un congé	6 During all this time I had not been in Jerusalem, for in the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes, king of Babylon, I had gone back to the king. After due time, however, I asked leave of the king
7 et revins à Jérusalem. J'appris alors la mauvaise action qu'avait faite Elyashib en faveur deTobiyya, en lui aménageant une salle dans le parvis du Temple de Dieu.	7 and returned to Jerusalem, where I discovered the evil thing that Eliashib had done for Tobiah, in setting aside for him a chamber in the courts of the house of God.
8 Cela me déplut fort: je jetai donc à la rue, hors de la salle, tout le mobilier de Tobiyya,	8 This displeased me very much, and I had all of Tobiah's household goods thrown outside the chamber.
9 et j'ordonnai qu'on purifiât les salles; puis j'y fis réintégrer les ustensiles du Temple de Dieu, lesoffrandes et l'encens.	9 Then I gave orders to purify the chambers, and I had them replace there the utensils of the house of God, the cereal offerings, and the incense.
10 J'appris également que les parts des lévites ne rentraient plus et que les lévites et les chantreschargés du service s'étaient enfuis chacun vers son champ.	10 I learned, too, that the portions due the Levites were no longer being given, so that the Levites and the singers who should have been carrying out the services had deserted, each man to his own field.
11 Aussi tançai-je les magistrats en ces termes: "Pourquoi le Temple de Dieu est-il à l'abandon?" Jeles rassemblai donc et les rétablis dans leur fonction.	11 I took the magistrates to task, demanding, "Why is the house of God abandoned?" Then I brought the Levites together and had them resume their stations.
12 Alors tout Juda apporta aux magasins la dîme du blé, du vin et de l'huile.	12 All Judah once more brought in the tithes of grain, wine, and oil to the storerooms;
13 Je préposai aux magasins le prêtre Shélémya, le scribe Sadoq, Pedaya, l'un des lévites, et, pourles assister, Hanân, fils de Zakkur, fils de Mattanya, car ils passaient pour intègres; leur office fut de faire lesdistributions à leurs frères.	13 and in charge of the storerooms I appointed the priest Shelemiah, Zadok the scribe, and Pedaiah, one of the Levites, together with Hanan, son of Zaccur, son of Mattaniah, as their assistant; for these men were held to be trustworthy. It was their duty to make the distribution to their brethren.
14 Pour cela, souviens-toi de moi, mon Dieu: n'efface pas les actes de piété que j'ai accomplis pourle Temple de mon Dieu et ses observances.	14 Remember this to my credit, O my God! Let not the devotion which I showed for the house of my God and its services be forgotten!
15 En ces jours-là, je vis en Juda des gens qui foulaient au pressoir, le jour du sabbat; d'autresapportaient des gerbes de blé, les chargeaient sur des ânes, avec du vin, des raisins, des figues et toutes sortes defardeaux, qu'ils voulaient introduire à Jérusalem le jour du sabbat: je les avertis de ne point vendre de denrées.	15 In those days I perceived that men in Judah were treading the winepresses on the sabbath; that they were bringing in sheaves of grain, loading them on their asses, together with wine, grapes, figs, and every other kind of burden, and bringing them to Jerusalem on the sabbath day. I warned them to sell none of these victuals.
16 A Jérusalem même, des Tyriens, qui habitaient là, apportaient du poisson et des marchandisesde tout genre pour les vendre aux Judéens le jour du sabbat.	16 In Jerusalem itself the Tyrians who were resident there were importing fish and every other kind of merchandise and selling it to the Judahites on the sabbath.
17 Aussi tançai-je les grands de Juda, leur déclarant: "Quelle chose exécrable vous faites là, enprofanant le jour du sabbat!	17 I took the nobles of Judah to task, demanding of them: "What is this evil thing that you are doing, profaning the sabbath day?
18 N'est-ce pas ainsi qu'ont agi vos pères? Alors notre Dieu fit venir tout ce malheur sur nous et surcette ville. Et vous, vous accroissez la Colère contre Israël en profanant le sabbat."	18 Did not your fathers act in this same way, with the result that our God has brought all this evil upon us and upon this city? Would you add to the wrath against Israel by once more profaning the sabbath?"
19 Aussi, dès que l'ombre eut gagné les portes de Jérusalem, juste avant le sabbat, j'ordonnai lafermeture des battants et je dis qu'on ne les rouvre qu'après le sabbat. Je postai quelques-uns de mes gens auxportes pour qu'aucun fardeau n'entrât le jour du sabbat.	19 When the shadows were falling on the gates of Jerusalem before the sabbath, I ordered the doors to be closed and forbade them to be reopened till after the sabbath. I posted some of my own men at the gates so that no burden might enter on the sabbath day.
20 Une fois ou deux, des marchands, des trafiquants en tous genres de marchandises passèrent lanuit hors de Jérusalem,	20 The merchants and sellers of various kinds of merchandise spent the night once or twice outside Jerusalem,
21 mais je les avertis, leur déclarant: "Pourquoi passer la nuit aux abords du mur? Si vousrecommencez, je mettrai la main sur vous!" Depuis ce moment, ils ne sont plus venus le jour du sabbat.	21 but then I warned them, saying to them: "Why do you spend the night alongside the wall? If you keep this up, I will lay hands on you!" From that time on, they did not return on the sabbath.
22 J'ordonnai aux lévites de se purifier et de venir surveiller les portes, pour qu'on observâtsaintement le jour du sabbat. Pour cela aussi souviens-toi de moi, mon Dieu, et prends-moi en pitié, selon tagrande miséricorde!	22 Then I ordered the Levites to purify themselves and to go and watch the gates, so that the sabbath day might be kept holy. This, too, remember in my favor, O my God, and have mercy on me in accordance with your great mercy!
23 En ces jours-là encore, je vis des Juifs qui avaient épousé des femmes Ashdodites, ammonitesou moabites.	23 Also in those days I saw Jews who had married Ashdodite, Ammonite, or Moabite wives.
24 Quant à leurs enfants, la moitié parlait l'Ashdodien ou la langue de tel ou tel peuple, mais nesavait plus parler le juif.	24 Of their children, half spoke Ashdodite, and none of them knew how to speak Jewish; and so it was in regard to the languages of the various other peoples.
25 Je les tançai et les maudis, en frappai plusieurs, leur arrachai les cheveux et les adjurai de parDieu: "Vous ne devez pas donner vos filles à leurs fils, ni prendre pour femmes aucune de leurs filles, pour vosfils ou pour vous-mêmes!	25 I took them to task and cursed them; I had some of them beaten and their hair pulled out; and I adjured them by God: "You shall not marry your daughters to their sons nor take any of their daughters for your sons or for yourselves!
26 N'est-ce pas en cela qu'a péché Salomon, roi d'Israël? Parmi tant de nations, aucun roi ne lui futsemblable; il était aimé de son Dieu; Dieu l'avait fait roi sur tout Israël. Même lui, les femmes étrangèresl'entraînèrent à pécher!	26 Did not Solomon, the king of Israel, sin because of them? Though among the many nations there was no king like him, and though he was beloved of his God and God had made him king over all Israel, yet even he was made to sin by foreign women.
27 Faudra-t-il entendre dire que vous commettez aussi ce grand crime: trahir notre Dieu en vousmariant avec des femmes étrangères?"	27 Must it also be heard of you that you have done this same very great evil, betraying our God by marrying foreign women?"
28 L'un des fils de Yoyada, fils d'Elyashib, le grand prêtre, était le gendre de Sânballat, le Horonite.Je le chassai loin de moi.	28 One of the sons of Joiada, son of Eliashib the high priest, was the son-in-law of Sanballat the Horonite! I drove him from my presence.
29 Souviens-toi de ces gens, mon Dieu, pour l'avilissement causé au sacerdoce et à l'alliance desprêtres et lévites.	29 Remember against them, O my God, how they defiled the priesthood and the covenant of the priesthood and the Levites!
30 Je les purifiai donc de tout élément étranger. J'établis, pour les prêtres et les lévites, lesrèglements qui délimitaient à chacun sa tâche.	30 Thus I cleansed them of all foreign contamination. I established the various functions for the priests and Levites, so that each had his appointed task.
31 J'en établis également pour les livraisons du bois à dates fixées, et pour les prémices. Souviens-toi de moi, mon Dieu, pour mon bonheur!	31 I also provided for the procurement of wood at stated times and for the first fruits. Remember this in my favor, O my God!
