1 Ahitophel dit à Absalom: "Laisse-moi choisir 12.000 hommes et me lancer, cette nuit même, à lapoursuite de David.	1 Then Ahithophel said to Absalom: “I will choose for myself twelve thousand men, and rising up, I will pursue David this night.
2 Je tomberai sur lui quand il sera fatigué et sans courage, je l'épouvanterai et tout le peuple qui estavec lui prendra la fuite. Alors je frapperai le roi seul	2 And rushing against him, for he is weary and has weakened hands, I will strike him. And when all the people who are with him will have fled, I will strike down the king in isolation.
3 et je ramènerai à toi tout le peuple, comme la fiancée revient à son époux: tu n'en veux qu'à la vied'un seul homme et tout le peuple sera sauf."	3 And I will lead back the entire people, returning in the manner of one man. For you are seeking only one man. And all the people shall be in peace.”
4 La proposition plut à Absalom et à tous les anciens d'Israël.	4 And this word pleased Absalom and all those greater by birth of Israel.
5 Cependant Absalom dit: "Appelez encore Hushaï l'Arkite, que nous entendions ce qu'il a à direlui aussi."	5 But Absalom said, “Summon Hushai the Archite, and let us hear what he also may say.”
6 Hushaï arriva auprès d'Absalom, et Absalom lui dit: "Ahitophel a parlé de telle manière. Devons-nous faire ce qu'il a dit? Sinon, parle toi-même."	6 And when Hushai had gone to Absalom, Absalom said to him: “Ahithophel has spoken a word in this manner. Should we do it or not? What counsel do you give?”
7 Hushaï répondit à Absalom: "Pour cette fois le conseil qu'a donné Ahitophel n'est pas bon."	7 And Hushai said to Absalom, “The counsel that Ahithophel has given at this time is not good.”
8 Et Hushaï poursuivit: "Tu sais que ton père et ses gens sont des preux et qu'ils sont exaspérés,comme une ourse sauvage à qui on a ravi ses petits. Ton père est un homme de guerre, il ne laissera pas l'arméese reposer la nuit.	8 And again Hushai declared, “You know your father, and the men who are with him, to be very strong and bitter in soul, comparable to a bear raging in the forest when her young have been taken away. Moreover, your father is a man of war, and so he will not live among the people.
9 Il se cache maintenant dans quelque creux ou dans quelque place. Si, dès l'abord, il y a desvictimes dans notre troupe, la rumeur se répandra d'un désastre dans l'armée qui suit Absalom.	9 Perhaps now he hides in pits, or in another place, wherever he wills. And if by chance, in the beginning, anyone may fall, whoever hears about it, no matter what he has heard, will say, ‘There is a slaughter among the people who were following Absalom.’
10 Alors même le brave qui a un coeur semblable à celui du lion perdra courage, car tout Israël saitque ton père est un preux et que ceux qui l'accompagnent sont braves.	10 And even the very strong, whose heart is like the heart of a lion, will be weakened out of fear. For all the people of Israel know your father to be a valiant man, and that all who are with him are robust.
11 Pour moi, je donne le conseil suivant: que tout Israël, depuis Dan jusqu'à Bersabée, serassemble autour de toi, aussi nombreux que les grains de sable au bord de la mer, et tu marcheras en personneau milieu d'eux.	11 But this seems to me to be the right counsel: Let all of Israel be gathered to you, from Dan to Beersheba, like the sand of the sea which is innumerable. And you will be in their midst.
12 Nous l'atteindrons en quelque lieu qu'il se trouve, nous nous abattrons sur lui comme la roséetombe sur le sol et nous ne laisserons subsister ni lui ni personne de tous les hommes qui l'accompagnent.	12 And we shall rush against him in whatever place he will have been found. And we shall cover him, as the dew usually falls upon the ground. And we shall not leave behind even one of the men who are with him.
13 Que s'il se retire dans une ville, tout Israël apportera des cordes à cette ville et nous la traîneronsau torrent, jusqu'à ce qu'on n'en trouve plus un caillou."	13 And if he will enter into any city, all of Israel shall encircle that city with ropes. And we will pull it into the torrent, so that there may not be found even one small stone from it.”
14 Absalom et tous les gens d'Israël dirent: "Le conseil de Hushaï l'Arkite est meilleur que celuid'Ahitophel." Yahvé avait décidé de faire échouer le plan habile d'Ahitophel, afin d'amener le malheur surAbsalom.	14 And Absalom, with all the men of Israel, said: “The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel.” So, by an act of the Lord, the useful counsel of Ahithophel was defeated, in order that the Lord might lead evil over Absalom.
15 Hushaï dit alors aux prêtres Sadoq et Ebyatar: "Ahitophel a donné tel et tel conseil à Absalom etaux anciens d'Israël, mais c'est telle et telle chose que moi, j'ai conseillée.	15 And Hushai said to the priests, Zadok and Abiathar: “Ahithophel gave counsel to Absalom and to the elders of Israel in this and that manner. And I gave counsel in such and such a manner.
16 Maintenant, envoyez vite avertir David et dites-lui: Ne bivouaque pas cette nuit dans les passesdu désert, mais traverse d'urgence de l'autre côté, de crainte que ne soient anéantis le roi et toute l'armée quil'accompagne."	16 Now therefore, send quickly, and report to David, saying: ‘You shall not stay this night in the plains of the desert. Instead, without delay, go across. Otherwise the king may be engulfed, and all the people who are with him.’ ”
17 Yehonatân et Ahimaaç étaient postés à la source du Foulon: une servante viendrait les avertir eteux-mêmes iraient avertir le roi David, car ils ne pouvaient pas se découvrir en entrant dans la ville.	17 But Jonathan and Ahimaaz remained beside the Fountain of Rogel. And a handmaid went away and reported it to them. And they set out, so that they might carry the report to king David. For they could not be seen, nor enter into the city.
18 Mais un jeune homme les aperçut et porta la nouvelle à Absalom. Alors ils partirent tous deuxen hâte et arrivèrent à la maison d'un homme de Bahurim. Il y avait dans sa cour une citerne où ils descendirent.	18 But a certain young man saw them, and he revealed it to Absalom. Yet truly, they traveled quickly and entered into the house of a certain man in Bahurim, who had a well in his court, and they descended into it.
19 La femme prit une bâche, elle l'étendit sur la bouche de la citerne et étala dessus du grainconcassé, de sorte qu'on ne remarquait rien.	19 Then a woman took and spread a covering over the mouth of the well, as if drying hulled barley. And so the matter was hidden.
20 Les serviteurs d'Absalom entrèrent chez cette femme dans la maison et demandèrent: "Où sontAhimaaç et Yehonatân", et la femme leur répondit: "Ils ont passé outre allant d'ici vers l'eau." Ils cherchèrent et,ne trouvant rien, revinrent à Jérusalem.	20 And when the servants of Absalom had entered into the house, they said to the woman, “Where is Ahimaaz and Jonathan?” And the woman responded to them, “They passed through hurriedly, after they had taken a little water.” But those who were seeking them, when they had not found them, returned to Jerusalem.
21 Après leur départ, Ahimaaç et Yehonatân remontèrent de la citerne et allèrent avertir le roiDavid: "Mettez-vous en route et hâtez-vous de passer l'eau, car voilà le conseil qu'Ahitophel a donné à votrepropos."	21 And when they had gone, they ascended from the well. And traveling, they reported to king David, and they said: “Rise up, and go across the river quickly. For Ahithophel has given a counsel of this kind against you.”
22 David et toute l'armée qui l'accompagnait se mirent donc en route et passèrent le Jourdain; àl'aube, il ne manquait personne qui n'eût passé le Jourdain.	22 Therefore, David rose up, and all the people who were with him, and they crossed over the Jordan, until first light. And not even one of them was left behind who had not crossed over the river.
23 Quant à Ahitophel, lorsqu'il vit que son conseil n'était pas suivi, il sella son âne et se mit enroute pour aller chez lui dans sa ville. Il mit ordre à sa maison, puis il s'étrangla et mourut. On l'ensevelit dans letombeau de son père.	23 Then Ahithophel, seeing that his counsel had not been done, saddled his donkey, and he rose up and went away to his own house and to his own city. And putting his house in order, he killed himself by hanging. And he was buried in the sepulcher of his father.
24 David était arrivé à Mahanayim lorsqu'Absalom franchit le Jourdain avec tous les hommesd'Israël.	24 Then David went to the encampment, and Absalom crossed over the Jordan, he and all the men of Israel with him.
25 Absalom avait mis Amasa à la tête de l'armée à la place de Joab. Or Amasa était le fils d'unhomme qui s'appelait Yitra l'Ismaélite et qui s'était uni à Abigayil, fille de Jessé et soeur de Ceruya, la mère deJoab.	25 Truly, Absalom appointed Amasa in place of Joab over the army. Now Amasa was the son of a man who was called Ithra of Jezrael, who entered to Abigail, the daughter of Nahash, the sister of Zeruiah, who was the mother of Joab.
26 Israël et Absalom dressèrent leur camp au pays de Galaad.	26 And Israel made camp with Absalom in the land of Gilead.
27 Lorsque David arriva à Mahanayim, Shobi, fils de Nahash, de Rabba des Ammonites, Makir,fils d'Ammiel, de Lo-Debar, et Barzillaï le Galaadite, de Roglim,	27 And when David had arrived at the encampment, Shobi, the son of Nahash, from Rabbah, of the sons of Ammon, and Machir, the son of Ammiel of Lodebar, and Barzillai, the Gileadite of Rogelim,
28 apportèrent des matelas de lit, des tapis, des coupes et de la vaisselle. Il y avait du froment, del'orge, de la farine, du grain grillé, des fèves, des lentilles,	28 brought to him bedding, and tapestries, and earthen vessels, and wheat, and barley, and meal, and cooked grain, and beans, and lentils, and fried chick peas,
29 du miel, du lait caillé et des fromages de vache et de brebis, qu'ils offrirent à David et au peuplequi l'accompagnait pour qu'ils s'en nourrissent. En effet, ils s'étaient dit: "L'armée a souffert de la faim, de lafatigue et de la soif dans le désert."	29 and honey, and butter, sheep and fattened calves. And they gave these to David and to the people who were with him to eat. For they suspected that the people were faint with hunger and thirst in the desert.
