Livre de la Genèse 34

JERUSALEM	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Dina, la fille que Léa avait donnée à Jacob, sortit pour aller voir les filles du pays.	1 Dinah, who was Jacob's daughter by Leah, went out to visit some of the women of that region.
2 Sichem, le fils de Hamor le Hivvite, prince du pays, la vit et, l'ayant enlevée, il coucha avec elle etlui fit violence.	2 Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, headman of the region, saw her, seized her and forced her tosleep with him.
3 Mais son cœur s'attacha à Dina, fille de Jacob, il eut de l'amour pour la jeune fille et il parla à soncœur.	3 He was captivated by Dinah daughter of Jacob; he fel in love with the girl and tried to win her heart.
4 Sichem parla ainsi à son père Hamor: "Prends-moi cette petite pour femme."	4 Accordingly Shechem said to his father Hamor, 'Get me this girl; I want to marry her.'
5 Jacob avait appris qu'il avait déshonoré sa fille Dina, mais comme ses fils étaient aux champs avecson troupeau, Jacob garda le silence jusqu'à leur retour.	5 Meanwhile, Jacob had heard how his daughter Dinah had been dishonoured, but since his sons wereout in the countryside with his livestock, Jacob said nothing until they came back.
6 Hamor, le père de Sichem, se rendit chez Jacob pour lui parler.	6 Hamor father of Shechem was visiting Jacob to discuss the matter with him,
7 Lorsque les fils de Jacob revinrent des champs et apprirent cela, ces hommes furent indignés etentrèrent en grand courroux de ce qu'il avait commis une infamie en Israël en couchant avec la fille de Jacob:cela ne doit pas se faire!	7 when Jacob's sons returned from the countryside and heard the news; the men were outraged andinfuriated that Shechem had insulted Israel by sleeping with Jacob's daughter -- a thing total y unacceptable.
8 Hamor leur parla ainsi: "Mon fils Sichem s'est épris de votre fille, veuillez la lui donner pourfemme.	8 Hamor reasoned with them as fol ows, 'My son Shechem's heart is set on your daughter. Please al owher to marry him.
9 Alliez-vous à nous: vous nous donnerez vos filles et vous prendrez les nôtres pour vous.	9 Intermarry with us; give us your daughters and take our daughters for yourselves.
10 Vous demeurerez avec nous et le pays vous sera ouvert: vous pourrez y habiter, y circuler, vous yétablir."	10 We can live together, and the country wil be open to you, for you to live in, and move about in, andacquire holdings.'
11 Sichem dit au père et aux frères de la jeune fille: "Que je trouve grâce à vos yeux et je donnerai ceque vous me demanderez!	11 Then Shechem addressed the girl's father and brothers, 'Grant me this favour, and I will give youwhatever you ask.
12 Imposez-moi une grosse somme, comme prix et comme présent, je payerai autant que vous medemanderez, mais donnez-moi la jeune fille pour femme!"	12 Demand as high a bride-price from me as you please, and I wil pay as much as you ask. Only let memarry the girl.'
13 Les fils de Jacob répondirent à Sichem et à son père Hamor et ils parlèrent avec ruse, parce qu'ilavait déshonoré leur sœur Dina.	13 Jacob's sons gave Shechem and his father Hamor a crafty answer, speaking as they did because hehad dishonoured their sister Dinah.
14 Ils leur dirent: "Nous ne pouvons pas faire une chose pareille: donner notre sœur à un hommeincirconcis, car c'est un déshonneur chez nous.	14 'We cannot do this,' they said to them. 'To give our sister to an uncircumcised man would be adisgrace for us.
15 Nous ne vous donnerons notre consentement qu'à cette condition: c'est que vous deveniez commenous et fassiez circoncire tous vos mâles.	15 We can agree only on one condition: that you become like us by circumcising al your males.
16 Alors nous vous donnerons nos filles et nous prendrons les vôtres pour nous, nous demeureronsavec vous et formerons un seul peuple.	16 Then we wil give you our daughters, taking yours for ourselves; and we wil stay with you to makeone nation.
17 Mais si vous ne nous écoutez pas, touchant la circoncision, nous prendrons notre fille et nouspartirons."	17 But if you will not agree to our terms about being circumcised, we shal take our daughter and go.'
18 Leurs paroles plurent à Hamor et à Sichem, fils de Hamor.	18 Hamor and Shechem son of Hamor were pleased with what they heard.
19 Le jeune homme n'hésita pas à faire la chose, car il était épris de la fille de Jacob; or il était le plusconsidéré de toute sa famille.	19 The young man did not hesitate about doing this, for he was deeply in love with Jacob's daughter.Moreover he was the most respected member of his entire family.
20 Hamor et son fils Sichem allèrent à la porte de leur ville et parlèrent ainsi aux hommes de leurville:	20 Hamor and his son Shechem went to the gate of their town and spoke to their fellow-townsmen asfol ows,
21 "Ces gens-là sont bien intentionnés: qu'ils demeurent avec nous dans le pays, ils y circuleront, lepays sera ouvert pour eux dans toute son étendue, nous prendrons leurs filles pour femmes et nous leurdonnerons nos filles.	21 'These men are friendly; let them settle in the region and move about freely in it; there is plenty ofroom here for them; we shal marry their daughters and give our daughters to them.
22 Mais ces gens ne consentiront à demeurer avec nous pour former un seul peuple qu'à cettecondition: c'est que tous nos mâles soient circoncis comme ils le sont eux-mêmes.	22 But these men will agree to settle with us and become a single nation only on this condition: that alour males be circumcised like them.
23 Leurs troupeaux, leurs biens, tout leur bétail ne seront-ils pas à nous? Donnons-leur seulementnotre consentement, pour qu'ils demeurent avec nous."	23 Wil not the livestock they own, al their animals, become ours? Then let us give our assent to this, sothat they can settle with us.'
24 Hamor et son fils Sichem furent écoutés par tous ceux qui ranchissaient la porte de leur ville, ettous les mâles se firent circoncire.	24 Al the citizens of the town agreed to the proposal made by Hamor and his son Shechem, and al themales were circumcised.
25 Or, le troisième jour, tandis qu'ils étaient souffrants, les deux fils de Jacob, Siméon et Lévi, lesfrères de Dina, prirent chacun son épée et marchèrent sans opposition contre la ville: ils tuèrent tous les mâles.	25 Now on the third day, when the men were stil in pain, Jacob's two sons Simeon and Levi, Dinah'sbrothers, each took his sword and advanced unopposed against the town and slaughtered al the males.
26 Ils passèrent au fil de l'épée Hamor et son fils Sichem, enlevèrent Dina de la maison de Sichem etpartirent.	26 They kil ed Hamor and his son Shechem with the sword, removed Dinah from Shechem's house andcame away.
27 Les fils de Jacob assaillirent les blessés et pillèrent la ville, parce qu'on avait déshonoré leur sœur.	27 When Jacob's other sons came on the slain, they pil aged the town in reprisal for the dishonouring oftheir sister.
28 Ils prirent leur petit et leur gros bétail et leurs ânes, ce qui était dans la ville et ce qui était auxchamps.	28 They seized their flocks, cattle, donkeys, everything else in the town and in the countryside,
29 Ils ravirent tous leurs biens, tous leurs enfants et leurs femmes, et ils pillèrent tout ce qu'il y avaitdans les maisons.	29 and al their possessions. They took al their children and wives captive and looted everything to befound in the houses.
30 Jacob dit à Siméon et Lévi: "Vous m'avez mis en mauvaise posture en me rendant odieux auxhabitants du pays, les Cananéens et les Perizzites: j'ai peu d'hommes, ils se rassembleront contre moi, mevaincront et je serai anéanti avec ma maison."	30 Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, 'You have done me an il turn by bringing me into bad odour with thepeople of the region, the Canaanites and the Perizzites. I have few men, whereas they wil unite against me todefeat me and destroy me and my family.'
31 Mais ils répliquèrent: "Devait-on traiter notre sœur comme une prostituée?"	31 They retorted, 'Should our sister be treated like a whore?'
