DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
Before the festival day of the pasch, Jesus knowing that his hour was come, that he should pass out of this world to the Father: having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them unto the end.1 Before the feast of Passover, Jesus knew that his hour had come to pass from this world to the Father. He loved his own in the world and he loved them to the end.
And when supper was done, (the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray him,)2 The devil had already induced Judas, son of Simon the Iscariot, to hand him over. So, during supper,
Knowing that the Father had given him all things into his hands, and that he came from God, and goeth to God;3 fully aware that the Father had put everything into his power and that he had come from God and was returning to God,
He riseth from supper, and layeth aside his garments, and having taken a towel, girded himself.4 he rose from supper and took off his outer garments. He took a towel and tied it around his waist.
After that, he putteth water into a basin, and began to wash the feet of the disciples, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.5 Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and dry them with the towel around his waist.
He cometh therefore to Simon Peter. And Peter saith to him: Lord, dost thou wash my feet?6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, "Master, are you going to wash my feet?"
Jesus answered, and said to him: What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter.7 Jesus answered and said to him, "What I am doing, you do not understand now, but you will understand later."
Peter saith to him: Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him: If I wash thee not, thou shalt have no part with me.8 Peter said to him, "You will never wash my feet." Jesus answered him, "Unless I wash you, you will have no inheritance with me."
Simon Peter saith to him: Lord, not only my feet, but also my hands and my head.9 Simon Peter said to him, "Master, then not only my feet, but my hands and head as well."
Jesus saith to him: He that is washed, needeth not but to wash his feet, but is clean wholly. And you are clean, but not all.10 Jesus said to him, "Whoever has bathed has no need except to have his feet washed, for he is clean all over; so you are clean, but not all."
For he knew who he was that would betray him; therefore he said: You are not all clean.11 For he knew who would betray him; for this reason, he said, "Not all of you are clean."
Then after he had washed their feet, and taken his garments, being set down again, he said to them: Know you what I have done to you?12 So when he had washed their feet (and) put his garments back on and reclined at table again, he said to them, "Do you realize what I have done for you?
You call me Master, and Lord; and you say well, for so I am.13 You call me 'teacher' and 'master,' and rightly so, for indeed I am.
If then I being your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; you also ought to wash one another's feet.14 If I, therefore, the master and teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash one another's feet.
For I have given you an example, that as I have done to you, so you do also.15 I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should also do.
Amen, amen I say to you: The servant is not greater than his lord; neither is the apostle greater than he that sent him.16 Amen, amen, I say to you, no slave is greater than his master nor any messenger greater than the one who sent him.
If you know these things, you shall be blessed if you do them.17 If you understand this, blessed are you if you do it.
I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen. But that the scripture may be fulfilled: He that eateth bread with me, shall lift up his heel against me.18 I am not speaking of all of you. I know those whom I have chosen. But so that the scripture might be fulfilled, 'The one who ate my food has raised his heel against me.'
At present I tell you, before it come to pass: that when it shall come to pass, you may believe that I am he.19 From now on I am telling you before it happens, so that when it happens you may believe that I AM.
Amen, amen I say to you, he that receiveth whomsoever I send, receiveth me; and he that receiveth me, receiveth him that sent me.20 Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever receives the one I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me."
When Jesus had said these things, he was troubled in spirit; and he testified, and said: Amen, amen I say to you, one of you shall betray me.21 When he had said this, Jesus was deeply troubled and testified, "Amen, amen, I say to you, one of you will betray me."
The disciples therefore looked one upon another, doubting of whom he spoke.22 The disciples looked at one another, at a loss as to whom he meant.
Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.23 One of his disciples, the one whom Jesus loved, was reclining at Jesus' side.
Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, and said to him: Who is it of whom he speaketh?24 So Simon Peter nodded to him to find out whom he meant.
He therefore, leaning on the breast of Jesus, saith to him: Lord, who is it?25 He leaned back against Jesus' chest and said to him, "Master, who is it?"
Jesus answered: He it is to whom I shall reach bread dipped. And when he had dipped the bread, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.26 Jesus answered, "It is the one to whom I hand the morsel after I have dipped it." So he dipped the morsel and (took it and) handed it to Judas, son of Simon the Iscariot.
And after the morsel, Satan entered into him. And Jesus said to him: That which thou dost, do quickly.27 After he took the morsel, Satan entered him. So Jesus said to him, "What you are going to do, do quickly."
Now no man at the table knew to what purpose he said this unto him.28 (Now) none of those reclining at table realized why he said this to him.
For some thought, because Judas had the purse, that Jesus had said to him: Buy those things which we have need of for the festival day: or that he should give something to the poor.29 Some thought that since Judas kept the money bag, Jesus had told him, "Buy what we need for the feast," or to give something to the poor.
He therefore having received the morsel, went out immediately. And it was night.30 So he took the morsel and left at once. And it was night.
When he therefore was gone out, Jesus said: Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him.31 When he had left, Jesus said, "Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him.
If God be glorified in him, God also will glorify him in himself; and immediately will he glorify him.32 (If God is glorified in him,) God will also glorify him in himself, and he will glorify him at once.
Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You shall seek me; and as I said to the Jews: Whither I go you cannot come; so I say to you now.33 My children, I will be with you only a little while longer. You will look for me, and as I told the Jews, 'Where I go you cannot come,' so now I say it to you.
A new commandment I give unto you: That you love one another, as I have loved you, that you also love one another.34 I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another.
By this shall all men know that you are my disciples, if you have love one for another.35 This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another."
Simon Peter saith to him: Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered: Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow hereafter.36 Simon Peter said to him, "Master, where are you going?" Jesus answered (him), "Where I am going, you cannot follow me now, though you will follow later."
Peter saith to him: Why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thee.37 Peter said to him, "Master, why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you."
Jesus answered him: Wilt thou lay down thy life for me? Amen, amen I say to thee, the cock shall not crow, till thou deny me thrice.38 Jesus answered, "Will you lay down your life for me? Amen, amen, I say to you, the cock will not crow before you deny me three times."
