Sirach 29

DOUAI-RHEIMS	SAGRADA BIBLIA
1 He that sheweth mercy, lendeth to his neighbour: and he that is stronger in hand, keepeth the commandments.	1 Aquele que tem compaixão empresta com juros ao seu próximo; aquele que tem a mão generosa guarda os mandamentos.
2 Lend to thy neighbour in the time of his need, and pay thou thy neighbour again in due time.	2 Empresta a teu próximo quando ele estiver necessitado, e de teu lado, paga-lhe o que lhe deves, no tempo marcado.
3 Reap thy word, and deal faithfully with him: and thou shalt always find that which is necessary for thee.	3 Cumpre tua palavra e procede lealmente com ele, e acharás em toda ocasião o que te é necessário.
4 Many have looked upon a thing lent as a thing found, and have given trouble to them that helped them.	4 Muitos consideraram como um achado o que pediam emprestado, e causaram desgosto àqueles que os ajudaram.
5 Till they receive, they kiss the hands of the lender, and in promises they humble their voice:	5 Até que se tenha recebido, beija-se a mão de quem empresta; com voz humilde fazem-se promessas;
6 But when they should repay, they will ask time, and will return tedious and murmuring words, and will complain of the time:	6 mas, chegando o tempo de restituir, pedem-se prazos; só se têm palavras pesarosas e queixas; e toma-se como pretexto (a dificuldade) da época.
7 And if he be able to pay, he will stand off, he will scarce pay one half, and will count it as if he had found it:	7 Se o que pede emprestado pode restituir, nega-se a princípio. Restitui em seguida só a metade da quantia, e a considera como um lucro.
8 But if not, he will defraud him of his money, and he shall get him for an enemy without cause:	8 Se não tem meios para pagar, priva o que emprestou do seu dinheiro, e dele se faz gratuitamente um inimigo.
9 And he will pay him with reproaches and curses, and instead of honour and good turn will repay him injuries.	9 Ele o paga com ofensas e maldições, e paga com o mal o bem que recebeu.
10 Many have refused to lend, not out of wickedness, but they were afraid to be defrauded without cause.	10 Muitos não emprestam, não por maldade, mas por medo de serem injustamente iludidos.
11 But yet towards the poor be thou more hearty, and delay not to shew him mercy.	11 Todavia, sê indulgente para com o miserável, e não o faças esmorecer depois da esmola.
12 Help the poor because of the commandment: and send him not away empty handed because of his poverty.	12 Por causa do mandamento, socorre o pobre; e não o deixes ir com as mãos vazias na sua indigência.
13 Lose thy money for thy brother and thy friend: and hide it not under a stone to be lost.	13 Perde o teu dinheiro em favor de teu irmão e de teu amigo; não o escondas debaixo de uma pedra para ficar perdido.
14 Place thy treasure in the commandments of the most High, and it shall bring thee more profit than gold.	14 Gasta o teu tesouro segundo o preceito do Altíssimo, e isso te aproveitará mais do que o ouro.
15 Shut up alms in the heart of the poor, and it shall obtain help for thee against all evil.	15 Encerra a esmola no coração do pobre, e ela rogará por ti a fim de te preservar de todo o mal.
16 Better than the shield of the mighty, and better than the spear:	16 Para combater o teu inimigo, ela será uma arma mais poderosa do que o escudo e a lança de umhomem valente.
17 It shall fight for thee against thy enemy.	17 .
18 A good man is surety for his neighbour: and he that hath lost shame, will leave him to himself.	18 .
19 Forget not the kindness of thy surety: for he hath given his life for thee.	19 O homem de bem responsabiliza-se pelo próximo; o homem sem pejo abandona-o a si próprio.
20 The sinner and the unclean fleeth from his surety.	20 Não esqueças o benefício daquele que se responsabiliza por ti, pois ele arriscou a vida para te amparar.
21 A sinner attributeth to himself the goods of his surety: and he that is of an unthankful mind will leave him that delivered him.	21 O pecador e o impudico fogem de seu fiador;
22 A man is surety for his neighbour: and when he hath lost all shame, he shall forsake him.	22 o pecador atribui a si mesmo o benefício de quem por ele se responsabiliza, e com coração ingrato abandona o seu libertador.
23 Evil suretyship hath undone many of good estate, and hath tossed them as a wave of the sea.	23 Um homem se responsabiliza pelo seu próximo, e este, perdendo a vergonha, o abandonará.
24 It hath made powerful men to go from place to place round about, and they have wandered in strange countries.	24 Um mau penhor perdeu muitas pessoas que prosperavam, e as agitou como as ondas do mar;
25 A sinner that transgresseth the commandment of the Lord, shall fall into an evil suretyship: and he that undertaketh many things, shall fall into judgment.	25 por uma reviravolta das coisas, ele exilou muitos poderosos, que se tornaram peregrinos em terra estrangeira.
26 Recover thy neighbour according to thy power, and take heed to thyself that thou fall not.	26 O pecador que transgride o mandamento do Senhor, comprometer-se-á a responder inoportunamente por outro; e aquele que tentar muitos empreendimentos não escapará do processo.
27 The chief thing for man's life is water and bread, and clothing, and a house to cover shame.	27 Ajuda o próximo conforme as tuas posses, e acautela-te para que não caias tu também.
28 Better is the poor man's fare under a roof of boards, than sumptuous cheer abroad in another man's house.	28 O principal para a vida do homem é a água, o pão, o vestuário e uma casa para ocultar a sua nudez.
29 Be contented with little instead of much, and thou shalt not hear the reproach of going abroad.	29 Mais vale o que um pobre come sob um vigamento, do que um magnífico banquete em casa alheia para quem não tem domicílio.
30 It is a miserable life to go as a guest from house to house: for where a man is a stranger, he shall not deal confidently, nor open his mouth.	30 Contenta-te com o pouco ou muito que tiveres e evitarás a censura de seres um estranho.
31 He shall entertain and feed, and give drink to the unthankful, and moreover he shall hear bitter words.	31 É uma vida miserável a daquele que vai de casa em casa; em toda parte onde se hospedar, não estará confiante, e não ousará abrir a boca.
32 Go, stranger, and furnish the table, and give others to eat what thou hast in thy hand.	32 Recebe-se com hospitalidade, dá-se de comer e de beber a ingratos; e, depois disso, ouvem-se palavras desagradáveis:
33 Give place to the honourable presence of my friends: for I want my house, my brother being to be lodged with me.	33 Vamos, intruso, prepara a mesa, e o que tens, dá-o de comer aos outros;
34 These things are grievous to a man of understanding: the upbraiding of houseroom, and the reproaching of the lender.	34 retira-te, por causa da homenagem que devo prestar aos meus amigos. Preciso de minha casa para nela receber meu irmão.
	35 Eis coisas penosas para um homem sensato: ouvir censuras pela hospitalidade e pelo empréstimo que se fez.
