Sirach 28

1 He that seeketh to revenge himself, shall find vengeance from the Lord, and he will surely keep his sins in remembrance.	1 Celui qui se venge éprouvera la vengeance du Seigneur: il lui tiendra des comptes rigoureux pour tous ses péchés.
2 Forgive thy neighbour if he hath hurl thee: and then shall thy sins be forgiven to thee when thou prayest.	2 Pardonne à ton prochain le tort qu’il t’a fait; alors, si tu le demandes, tes péchés te seront remis.
3 Man to man reserveth anger, and doth he seek remedy of God?	3 Quoi! Un humain garde rancune à un autre humain, et il demande à Dieu de le guérir?
4 He hath no mercy on a man like himself, and doth he entreat for his own sins?	4 Il est sans miséricorde pour un autre homme, son semblable, et il supplie pour ses propres péchés!
5 He that is but flesh, nourisheth anger, and doth he ask forgiveness of God? who shall obtain pardon for his sins?	5 S’il garde rancune, lui faible et pécheur, qui lui obtiendra son pardon?
6 Remember thy last things, and let enmity cease:	6 Souviens-toi de ta fin, et cesse de haïr; pense à la mort, à la décomposition, et observe les commandements.
7 For corruption and death hang over in his commandments.	7 Souviens-toi des commandements et ne garde pas rancune à ton prochain; pense à l’Alliance du Très-Haut, et oublie l’offense.
8 Remember the fear of God, and be not angry with thy neighbour.	8 Tiens-toi à l’écart des disputes et tu feras moins de péchés, car l’homme colérique allume les querelles.
9 Remember the covenant of the most High, and overlook the ignorance of thy neighbour.	9 Le pécheur jette le trouble entre les amis, il met la brouille parmi ceux qui vivaient en paix.
10 Refrain from strife, and thou shalt diminish thy sine:	10 L’ardeur du feu dépend du combustible, la querelle se développe selon les passions; plus l’homme est fort, plus il s’emporte; plus il est riche, plus il gonfle sa colère.
11 For a passionate man kindleth strife, and a sinful man will trouble his friends, and bring in debate in the midst of them that are at peace.	11 Une dispute imprévue allume le feu, une querelle soudaine fait couler le sang.
12 For as the wood of the forest is, so the fire burneth: and as a man's strength is, so shall his anger be, and according to his riches he shall increase his anger.	12 Souffle sur l’étincelle, le feu s’enflamme; crache dessus, elle s’éteint: les deux dépendent de ta bouche!
13 A hasty contention kindleth a fire: and a hasty quarrel sheddeth blood: and a tongue that beareth witness bringeth death.	13 Maudissez le calomniateur et son double discours: il a fait périr bien des gens qui vivaient en paix.
14 If thou blow the spark, it shall burn as a fire: and if thou spit upon it, it shall be quenched: both come out of the mouth.	14 Les insinuations d’une tierce personne les ont démolis, jusqu’à les disperser de nation en nation; elles ont détruit des villes puissantes et renversé de grandes maisons.
15 The whisperer and the double tongued is accursed: for he hath troubled many that were at peace.	15 La calomnie a fait répudier des femmes vaillantes et les a privées du fruit de leurs travaux.
16 The tongue of a third person hath disquieted many, and scattered them from nation to nation.	16 Qui lui prête l’oreille ne trouvera plus le repos, il ne vivra plus en paix.
17 It hath destroyed the strong cities of the rich, and hath overthrown the houses of great men.	17 Un coup de fouet laisse une meurtrissure, un coup de langue brise les os.
18 It hath cut in pieces the forces of people, and undone strong nations.	18 Beaucoup sont tombés victimes de l’épée, plus nombreuses encore les victimes de la langue.
19 The tongue of a third person hath cast out valiant women, and deprived them of their labours.	19 Heureux l’homme qui est resté hors de ses atteintes et n’a pas connu sa fureur, qui n’a pas traîné son joug et n’a pas eu à porter ses chaînes,
20 He that hearkeneth to it, shall never have rest, neither shall he have a friend in whom he may repose.	20 car son joug est un joug de fer, et ses chaînes, des chaînes de bronze.
21 The stroke of a whip maketh a blue mark: but the stroke of the tongue will break the bones.	21 La langue inflige une mort misérable, mieux vaut descendre au séjour d’en bas!
22 Many have fallen by the edge of the sword, but not so many as have perished by their own tongue.	22 Mais elle n’aura pas raison des fidèles; sa flamme ne les brûlera pas.
23 Blessed is he that is defended from a wicked tongue, that hath not passed into the wrath thereof, and that hath not drawn the yoke thereof, and hath not been bound in its bands.	23 Ceux qui abandonnent le Seigneur, oui, s’y feront prendre. Elle brûlera en eux sans jamais s’éteindre; elle se déchaînera sur eux comme un lion, comme une panthère elle les déchirera.
24 For its yoke is a yoke of iron: and its bands are bands of brass.	24 Tu entoures ta terre d’une haie d’épines, ton argent et ton or, tu les mets sous clé;
25 The death thereof is a most evil death: and hell is preferable to it.	25 pour tes paroles il te faut une balance et des poids: mets à ta bouche une porte et des verrous.
26 Its continuance shall not be for a long time, but it shall possess the ways of the unjust: and the just shall not be burnt with its flame.	26 Il ne faudrait pas qu’elle te fasse trébucher, et que tu tombes devant celui qui te guette.
27 They that forsake God shall fall into it, and it shall burn in them, and shall not be quenched, and it shall be sent upon them as a lion, and as a leopard it shall tear them.
28 Hedge in thy ears with thorns, hear not a wicked tongue, and make doors and bars to thy mouth.
29 Melt down thy gold and silver, and make a balance for thy words, and a just bridle for thy mouth:
30 And take heed lest thou slip with thy tongue, and fall in the sight of thy enemies who lie in wait for thee, and thy fall be incurable unto death.
