DOUAI-RHEIMSLXX
Knowest thou the time when the wild goats bring forth among the rocks, or hast thou observed the hinds when they fawn?1 ει εγνως καιρον τοκετου τραγελαφων πετρας εφυλαξας δε ωδινας ελαφων
Hast thou numbered the months of their conceiving, or knowest thou the time when they bring forth?2 ηριθμησας δε αυτων μηνας πληρεις τοκετου ωδινας δε αυτων ελυσας
They bow themselves to bring forth young, and they cast them, and send forth roarings.3 εξεθρεψας δε αυτων τα παιδια εξω φοβου ωδινας αυτων εξαποστελεις
Their young are weaned and go to feed : they go forth, and return not to them.4 απορρηξουσιν τα τεκνα αυτων πληθυνθησονται εν γενηματι εξελευσονται και ου μη ανακαμψουσιν αυτοις
Who hath sent out the wild ass free, and who hath loosed his bonds?5 τις δε εστιν ο αφεις ονον αγριον ελευθερον δεσμους δε αυτου τις ελυσεν
To whom I have given a house in the wilderness, and his dwellings in the barren land.6 εθεμην δε την διαιταν αυτου ερημον και τα σκηνωματα αυτου αλμυριδα
He scorneth the multitude of the city, he heareth not the cry of the driver.7 καταγελων πολυοχλιας πολεως μεμψιν δε φορολογου ουκ ακουων
He looketh round about the mountains of his pasture, and seeketh for every green thing.8 κατασκεψεται ορη νομην αυτου και οπισω παντος χλωρου ζητει
Shall the rhinoceros be willing to serve thee, or will he stay at thy crib?9 βουλησεται δε σοι μονοκερως δουλευσαι η κοιμηθηναι επι φατνης σου
Canst thou bind the rhinoceros with thy thong to plough, or will he break the clods of the valleys after thee?10 δησεις δε εν ιμασι ζυγον αυτου η ελκυσει σου αυλακας εν πεδιω
Wilt thou have confidence in his great strength, and leave thy labours to him?11 πεποιθας δε επ' αυτω οτι πολλη η ισχυς αυτου επαφησεις δε αυτω τα εργα σου
Wilt thou trust him that he will render thee the seed, and gather it into thy barnfloor?12 πιστευσεις δε οτι αποδωσει σοι τον σπορον εισοισει δε σου τον αλωνα
The wing of the ostrich is like the wings of the heron, and of the hawk.13 πτερυξ τερπομενων νεελασα εαν συλλαβη ασιδα και νεσσα
When she leaveth her eggs on the earth, thou perhaps wilt warm them in the dust.14 οτι αφησει εις γην τα ωα αυτης και επι χουν θαλψει
She forgetteth that the foot may tread upon them, or that the beasts of the field may break them.15 και επελαθετο οτι πους σκορπιει και θηρια αγρου καταπατησει
She is hardened against her young ones, as though they were not hers, she hath laboured in vain, no fear constraining her.16 απεσκληρυνεν τα τεκνα αυτης ωστε μη εαυτη εις κενον εκοπιασεν ανευ φοβου
For God hath deprived her of wisdom, neither hath he given her understanding.17 οτι κατεσιωπησεν αυτη ο θεος σοφιαν και ουκ εμερισεν αυτη εν τη συνεσει
When time shall be, she setteth up her wings on high : she scorneth the horse and his rider.18 κατα καιρον εν υψει υψωσει καταγελασεται ιππου και του επιβατου αυτου
Wilt thou give strength to the horse, or clothe his neck with neighing?19 η συ περιεθηκας ιππω δυναμιν ενεδυσας δε τραχηλω αυτου φοβον
Wilt thou lift him up like the locusts? the glory of his nostrils is terror.20 περιεθηκας δε αυτω πανοπλιαν δοξαν δε στηθεων αυτου τολμη
He breaketh up the earth with his hoof, he pranceth boldly, he goeth forward to meet armed men.21 ανορυσσων εν πεδιω γαυρια εκπορευεται δε εις πεδιον εν ισχυι
He despiseth fear, he turneth not his back to the sword,22 συναντων βελει καταγελα και ου μη αποστραφη απο σιδηρου
Above him shall the quiver rattle, the spear and shield shall glitter.23 επ' αυτω γαυρια τοξον και μαχαιρα
Chasing and raging he swalloweth the ground, neither doth he make account when the noise of the trumpet soundeth.24 και οργη αφανιει την γην και ου μη πιστευση εως αν σημανη σαλπιγξ
When he heareth the trumpet he saith : Ha, ha : he smelleth the battle afar off, the encouraging of the captains, and the shouting of the army.25 σαλπιγγος δε σημαινουσης λεγει ευγε πορρωθεν δε οσφραινεται πολεμου συν αλματι και κραυγη
Doth the hawk wax feathered by thy wisdom, spreading her wings to the south?26 εκ δε της σης επιστημης εστηκεν ιεραξ αναπετασας τας πτερυγας ακινητος καθορων τα προς νοτον
Will the eagle mount up at thy command, and make her nest in high places?27 επι δε σω προσταγματι υψουται αετος γυψ δε επι νοσσιας αυτου καθεσθεις αυλιζεται
She abideth among the rocks, and dwelleth among cragged flints, and stony hills, where there is no access.28 επ' εξοχη πετρας και αποκρυφω
From thence she looketh for the prey, and her eyes behold afar off.29 εκεισε ων ζητει τα σιτα πορρωθεν οι οφθαλμοι αυτου σκοπευουσιν
Her young ones shall suck up blood : and wheresoever the carcass shall be, she is immediately there.30 νεοσσοι δε αυτου φυρονται εν αιματι ου δ' αν ωσι τεθνεωτες παραχρημα ευρισκονται
And the Lord went on, and said to Job :
Shall he that contendeth with God be so easily silenced? surely he that reproveth God, ought to answer him.
Then Job answered the Lord, and said :
One thing I have spoken, which I wish I had not said : and another, to which I will add no more.
