Et il ne dit point cela à son père. | 1 One day, Jonathan son of Saul said to his armour-bearer, 'Come on, let us go across to the Philistineoutpost over on the other side.' But he did not inform his father. |
| 2 Cependant Saül se tenait à l'extrémité de Gabaa, sous le grenadier de Magron ; et il avait environ six cents hommes avec lui. | 2 Saul was on the outskirts of Geba, sitting under the pomegranate tree that stands near the threshing-floor; the force with him numbered about six hundred men. |
| 3 Achias, fils d'Achitob, frère d'Ichabod, fils de Phinées, fils d'Héli, (grand) prêtre du Seigneur à Silo, portait l'éphod. Et le peuple ne savait pas non plus où était allé Jonathas. | 3 Ahijah son of Ahitub, brother of Ichabod, son of Phinehas, son of Eli, the priest of Yahweh at Shiloh,was carrying the ephod. The force did not know that Jonathan had left. |
| 4 (Or) Le lieu par où Jonathas essayait de monter au poste des Philistins, était bordé de côté et d'autre de (deux) rochers élevés et escarpés, qui se dressaient en pointe comme des dents. L'un s'appelait Bosès, et l'autre Séné. | 4 In the pass that Jonathan was trying to cross to reach the Philistine outpost, there is a rocky spur onone side and a rocky spur on the other; one is cal ed Bozez, the other Seneh. |
| 5 L'un de ces rochers était situé du côté du septentrion vis-à-vis de Machmas, et l'autre du côté du midi vis-à-vis de Gabaa. | 5 The first spur stands to the north facing Michmash, the other to the south facing Geba. |
| 6 Jonathas dit donc au jeune homme son écuyer : Viens, passons jusqu'au poste de ces incirconcis ; peut-être que le Seigneur combattra pour nous ; car il ne lui est pas difficile de sauver soit avec un grand nombre, soit avec un petit nombre. | 6 Jonathan said to his armour-bearer, 'Come on, let us go across to these uncircumcised people'soutpost; perhaps Yahweh wil do something for us, for Yahweh is free to grant deliverance through a few men,just as much as through many.' |
| 7 Son écuyer lui répondit : Faites tout ce qu'il vous plaira ; allez où vous voudrez, et je vous suivrai partout. | 7 His armour-bearer replied, 'Do exactly as you think. I am with you; our hearts are as one.' |
| 8 Jonathas lui dit : Nous allons vers ces gens-là. Lors donc qu'ils nous auront aperçus, | 8 Jonathan then said, 'Look, we will go across to these people and let ourselves be seen. |
| 9 s'ils nous tiennent ce langage : Demeurez là jusqu'à ce que nous allions à vous ; demeurons à notre place, et n'allons point à eux. | 9 If they say, "Do not move until we come to you," we shal stay where we are and not go up to them. |
| 10 Mais s'ils nous disent : Montez vers nous ; montons-y, car ce sera la marque que le Seigneur les aura livrés entre nos mains. | 10 But if they say, "Come up to us," we shal go up, for that wil be the sign for us that Yahweh has given them into our power.' |
| 11 Or, lorsque la garde des Philistins les eut aperçus tous deux, les Philistins dirent : Voilà les Hébreux qui sortent des cavernes où ils s'étaient cachés. | 11 When the two of them let themselves be seen by the Philistine outpost, the Philistines said, 'Look,the Hebrews are coming out of the holes where they have been hiding.' |
| 12 Et les hommes du poste, s'adressant à Jonathas et à son écuyer, leur dirent : Montez ici, et nous vous ferons voir quelque chose. Jonathas dit alors à son écuyer : Montons, suis-moi ; car le Seigneur les a livrés entre les mains d'Israël. | 12 The men of the outpost then hailed Jonathan and his armour-bearer. 'Come up to us,' they said, 'wehave something to tel you.' Jonathan then said to his armour-bearer, 'Fol ow me up; Yahweh has given theminto the power of Israel.' |
| 13 Jonathas monta donc, grimpant avec les mains et avec les pieds, et son écuyer derrière lui ; aussitôt on vit les uns tomber sous la main de Jonathas, et son écuyer, qui le suivait, tuait les autres. | 13 Jonathan clambered up on hands and feet, with his armour-bearer behind him; the Philistines fel atJonathan's onslaught, and his armour-bearer, coming behind, finished them off. |
| 14 Telle fut la première défaite des Philistins, où Jonathas et son écuyer tuèrent environ vingt hommes, dans la moitié d'autant de terre (d'un arpent) qu'une paire de bœufs en peut labourer en un jour. | 14 This first kil ing made by Jonathan and his armour-bearer accounted for about twenty men . . . |
| 15 Et l'effroi (un miracle) se répandit au camp des Philistins à travers la campagne. Et tous ceux du poste qui étaient allés pour piller furent frappés d'étonnement, tout le pays fut en trouble, et ce fut comme une terreur envoyée par Dieu. | 15 There was panic in the camp, in the field and throughout the army; outpost and raiding company toowere panic-stricken; the earth quaked: it was a panic from Yahweh. |
| 16 Or les sentinelles de Saül qui étaient à Gabaa de Benjamin, jetant les yeux de ce côté-là, virent une multitude d'hommes étendus à terre, et d'autres qui fuyaient çà et là. | 16 Saul's look-out men in Geba of Benjamin could see the camp scattering in all directions. |
| 17 Alors Saül dit à ceux qui étaient avec lui : Cherchez et voyez qui est sorti de notre camp. Et quand on eut fait cette recherche, on trouva que Jonathas et son écuyer étaient absents. | 17 Saul then said to the force that was with him, 'Cal the roll and see who has left us.' So they cal edthe rol , and Jonathan and his armour-bearer were missing. |
| 18 Saül dit donc à Achias : Consultez (Approchez) l'arche de Dieu. Car l'arche de Dieu était alors là avec les enfants d'Israël. | 18 Saul then said to Ahijah, 'Bring the ephod,' since he was the man who carried the ephod in Israel. |
| 19 Et pendant que Saül parlait au prêtre, on entendit un bruit tumultueux, qui, venant du camp des Philistins, s'augmentait peu à peu, et qui retentissait de plus en plus. Saül dit donc au prêtre : C'est assez (Retirez votre main). | 19 But while Saul was speaking to the priest, the turmoil in the Philistine camp grew worse and worse;and Saul said to the priest, 'Withdraw your hand.' |
| 20 Et aussitôt il jeta un grand cri, que répéta tout le peuple qui était avec lui ; et étant venus au lieu du combat, ils trouvèrent que les Philistins s'étaient percés l'un l'autre de leurs épées, et qu'il s'en était fait un (très) grand carnage. | 20 Saul and the whole force with him then formed up and advanced to where the fighting was going on:and there they al were, drawing their swords on one another in wild confusion. |
| 21 Et (Mais) les Hébreux qui avaient été auparavant avec les Philistins, et qui étaient allés dans leur camp avec eux, vinrent se joindre aux Israélites qui étaient avec Saül et Jonathas. | 21 Those Hebrews who had earlier taken service with the Philistines and had accompanied them intocamp, now defected to the Israelites who were with Saul and Jonathan. |
| 22 De plus, tous les Israélites qui s'étaient cachés dans la montagne d'Ephraïm, ayant appris que les Philistins fuyaient, se réunirent avec leurs compatriotes pour les combattre ; et il y eut alors environ dix mille hommes avec Saül. | 22 Similarly, all those Israelites who had been hiding in the highlands of Ephraim, hearing that thePhilistines were on the run, chased after them and joined in the fight. |
| 23 En ce jour-là le Seigneur sauva Israël, et le combat se prolongea jusqu'à Béthaven. | 23 That day Yahweh gave Israel the victory. The fighting reached the other side of Beth-Horon. |
| 24 Et les Israélites se réunirent en ce jour-là ; et Saül engagea alors tout le peuple par ce serment : Maudit soit celui qui mangera avant le soir, jusqu'à ce que je me sois vengé de mes ennemis. C'est pourquoi tout le peuple s'abstint de manger. | 24 As the men of Israel were hard pressed that day, Saul pronounced this imprecation over the people,'A curse on anyone who eats food before evening, before I have taken revenge on my enemies!' So none of thepeople so much as tasted food. |
| 25 Or ils vinrent tous dans un bois où la terre était couverte de miel. | 25 Now there was a honeycomb out in the open. |
| 26 Le peuple, étant entré dans le bois, vit paraître ce miel qui découlait, et personne n'osa en porter à sa bouche, parce qu'ils craignaient le serment du roi. | 26 The people came to the honeycomb, the honey was dripping out, but no one put a hand to his mouth,the people being in awe of the oath. |
| 27 Mais Jonathas n'avait pas entendu cette adjuration que son père avait faite devant le peuple ; c'est pourquoi, étendant le bout d'une (de la) baguette qu'il tenait à la main, il le trempa dans un rayon de miel ; il porta ensuite la main à sa bouche, et ses yeux reprirent une nouvelle vigueur. | 27 Jonathan, however, not having heard his father bind the people with the oath, reached with the endof the stick which he was carrying, thrust it into the honeycomb and put it to his mouth; whereupon his eyes grewbrighter. |
| 28 Et (Mais) quelqu'un du peuple lui dit : Votre père a engagé tout le peuple par serment, en disant : Maudit soit celui qui mangera aujourd'hui. Or le peuple était épuisé. | 28 One of the people then spoke up. 'Your father', he said, 'has bound the people with this oath: "Acurse on anyone who eats anything today." ' |
| 29 Et Jonathas répondit : Mon père a troublé tout le monde ; vous avez vu vous-mêmes que mes yeux ont repris une nouvelle vigueur, parce que j'ai goûté un peu de ce miel. | 29 'My father has brought trouble on the country,' Jonathan replied. 'See how much brighter my eyes arefor having eaten this mouthful of honey. |
| 30 Combien plus le peuple se serait-il fortifié, s'il eût mangé de ce qu'il a rencontré dans le butin des ennemis ? La défaite des Philistins n'en aurait-elle pas été plus grande ? | 30 By the same token, if the people had been allowed to eat some of the booty which they had capturedfrom the enemy today, would not the defeat of the Philistines have been all the greater?' |
| 31 Les Hébreux battirent les Philistins en ce jour-là, et les poursuivirent depuis Machmas jusqu'à Aïalon. Et le peuple, étant extrêmement las, | 31 That day the Philistines were beaten from Michmash all the way to Aijalon, until the people wereutterly exhausted. |
| 32 se jeta sur le butin, prit des brebis, des bœufs et des veaux, et les tua sur place ; et le peuple mangea la chair avec le sang. | 32 The people flung themselves on the booty and, taking sheep, bul ocks and calves, slaughtered themthere on the ground and ate them with the blood. |
| 33 Saül en fut averti, et on lui dit que le peuple avait péché contre le Seigneur en mangeant de la chair avec le sang. Saül leur dit : Vous avez violé la loi ; qu'on me roule ici une grande pierre. | 33 Saul was informed, 'The people are sinning against Yahweh by eating with the blood!' He said, 'Youhave not kept faith! Roll me a large stone here!' |
| 34 Et il ajouta : Allez à travers tout le peuple, et dites-leur : Que chacun amène ici son bœuf et son bélier ; égorgez-les sur cette pierre, et ensuite mangez-en, et vous ne pécherez pas contre le Seigneur en mangeant de la chair avec le sang. Chacun vint donc amener là son bœuf jusqu'à la nuit, et ils immolèrent sur la pierre. | 34 Saul then said, 'Scatter among the people and say, "Everyone is to bring his bul ock or his sheep tome here." You wil slaughter them here and eat, and not sin against Yahweh by eating with the blood.' Eachindividual brought what he happened to have that night, and they al slaughtered in the same place. |
| 35 Alors (Or) Saül bâtit un autel au Seigneur ; et ce fut là la première fois qu'il lui éleva un autel. | 35 Saul built an altar to Yahweh; it was the first altar he had built to Yahweh. |
| 36 Saül dit ensuite : Jetons-nous cette nuit sur les Philistins, et taillons-les en pièces jusqu'au point du jour sans qu'il en reste un seul d'entre eux. Le peuple lui répondit : Faites tout ce qu'il vous plaira. Alors le prêtre lui dit : Allons ici consulter (Approchons-nous de) Dieu. | 36 Saul said, 'Let us go down under cover of dark and plunder the Philistines until dawn; we shal notleave one of them alive.' 'Do whatever you think right,' they replied. But the priest said, 'Let us approach Godhere.' |
| 37 Saül consulta donc le Seigneur, et lui dit : Poursuivrai-je les Philistins ? Les livrerez-vous entre les mains d'Israël ? Mais le Seigneur ne lui répondit pas cette fois. | 37 Saul consulted God, 'Shall I go down and pursue the Philistines? Will you hand them over to Israel?'But he gave him no reply that day. |
| 38 Alors Saül dit : Faites venir ici tous les principaux du peuple ; qu'on s'informe, et qu'on sache quel est celui par qui ce péché a été commis aujourd'hui. | 38 Saul then said, 'Come forward, al you leaders of the people; consider carefully where today's sinmay lie; |
| 39 Vive le Seigneur, sauveur d'Israël (vit, note) ! Si Jonathas mon fils se trouve coupable de ce péché, il mourra sans rémission. Et nul du peuple ne le contredit lorsqu'il parla ainsi. | 39 for as Yahweh lives who gives victory to Israel, even if the sin lies with Jonathan my son, he shal beput to death.' But not one out of al the people answered. |
| 40 Saül dit donc à tout Israël : Mettez-vous tous d'un côté ; et je me tiendrai de l'autre avec mon fils Jonathas. Le peuple répondit à Saül : Faites tout ce qu'il vous plaira. | 40 He then said to al Israel, 'Stand on one side, and I and Jonathan my son wil stand on the other.' Andthe people replied to Saul, 'Do as you think right.' |
| 41 Et Saül dit au Seigneur Dieu d'Israël : Seigneur Dieu d'Israël, donnez un signe : d'où vient que vous n'avez pas répondu aujourd'hui à votre serviteur ? Si cette iniquité est en moi ou en mon fils Jonathas, découvrez-le-nous ; ou si elle est dans votre peuple, sanctifiez-le (montrez votre sainteté). Le sort tomba sur Jonathas et sur Saül, et le peuple fut hors de cause. | 41 Saul then said, 'Yahweh, God of Israel, why did you not answer your servant today? Yahweh, God ofIsrael, if the fault lies with me or with my son Jonathan, give urim: if the fault lies with your people Israel, givethummim.' Jonathan and Saul were indicated and the people went free. |
| 42 Saül dit alors : Jetez le sort entre moi et Jonathas mon fils. Et le sort tomba sur Jonathas. | 42 Saul said, 'Cast the lot between me and my son Jonathan,' and Jonathan was indicated. |
| 43 Saül dit donc à Jonathas : Découvre-moi ce que tu as fait. Jonathas avoua tout, et lui dit : J'ai pris un peu de miel au bout d'une baguette que je tenais à la main, et j'en ai goûté ; et voici que je meurs. | 43 'I only tasted a mouthful of honey off the end of the stick which I was carrying. But I am ready to die.' |
| 44 (Et) Saül lui dit : Que Dieu me traite avec toute sa sévérité (me fasse ceci et qu'il ajoute cela, note) si tu ne meurs très certainement (de mort), Jonathas. | 44 Saul said, 'May God bring unnameable il s on me, and worse ones too, if you do not die, Jonathan!' |
| 45 Le peuple dit à Saül : Quoi donc ! Jonathas mourra-t-il, lui qui a sauvé Israël d'une manière si merveilleuse ? Cela ne se peut. (Vive) le Seigneur (vit) ! il ne tombera pas sur la terre un seul cheveu de sa tête ; car il a agi aujourd'hui visiblement avec Dieu. Le peuple délivra donc Jonathas, et le sauva de la mort. | 45 But the people said to Saul, 'Must Jonathan die after winning this great victory for Israel? We wilnever al ow that! As Yahweh lives, not one hair of his head shal fal to the ground, for his deeds today havebeen done with the help of God.' And so the people ransomed Jonathan and he was not put to death. |
| 46 Or (Après cela) Saül se retira, sans poursuivre davantage les Philistins ; et les Philistins s'en retournèrent aussi chez eux. | 46 Saul decided not to pursue the Philistines, and the Philistines retired to their own territory. |
| 47 Saül ayant affermi sa royauté sur Israël combattait de tous côtés contre tous ses ennemis : contre Moab, et les enfants d'Ammon, contre Edom, et les rois de Soba, et les Philistins. Et de quelque côté qu'il se tournât, il triomphait. | 47 Saul consolidated his rule over Israel and made war on al his enemies on al fronts: on Moab, theAmmonites, Edom, the king of Zobah and the Philistines; whichever way he turned, he was victorious. |
| 48 Et ayant réuni son armée, il défit les Amalécites, et délivra Israël de la main de ceux qui le pillaient (ses dévastateurs). | 48 He did great deeds of valour; he defeated the Amalekites and delivered Israel from those who usedto pil age him. |
| 49 Or les fils de Saül étaient Jonathas, Jessui et Melchisua. Ses deux filles s'appelaient, l'aînée Mérob, et la plus jeune Michol. | 49 Saul's sons were: Jonathan, Ishvi and Malchishua. The names of his two daughters were: the elder,Merab, and the younger, Michal. |
| 50 La femme de Saül se nommait Achinoam, et était fille d'Achimaas. Le général de son armée (prince de sa milice) était Abner, fils de Ner, cousin germain de Saül ; | 50 The name of Saul's wife was Ahinoam daughter of Ahimaaz. The name of his army commander wasAbner son of Ner, Saul's uncle. |
| 51 car Cis, père de Saül, et Ner, père d'Abner, étaient fils d'Abiel. | 51 Kish father of Saul, and Ner father of Abner were the sons of Abiel. |
| 52 Pendant tout le règne de Saül il y eut une guerre acharnée contre les Philistins. Et aussitôt que Saül avait reconnu qu'un homme était vaillant, et propre à la guerre, il le prenait auprès de lui. | 52 There was fierce warfare with the Philistines throughout Saul's life. Any strong or valiant man whocaught Saul's eye, he recruited into his service. |
