| 1 (Or,) Après que Ruth fut revenue auprès de sa belle-mère, celle-ci lui dit : Ma fille, je pense à te mettre en repos, et je pourvoirai à ton bonheur. | 1 After she was returned to her mother in law, Noemi said to her: My daughter, I will seek rest for thee, and will provide that it may be well with thee. |
| 2 Booz, aux filles duquel tu t'es jointe dans le champ, est notre proche parent, et il vannera cette nuit son orge dans son aire. | 2 This Booz, with whose maids thou wast joined in the field, is our near kinsman, and behold this night he winnoweth barley in the threshingfloor. |
| 3 Lave-toi donc, parfume-toi d'huile, et prends tes plus beaux vêtements, et va à son aire. Que Booz ne te voie point jusqu'à ce qu'il ait fini de boire et de manger. | 3 Wash thyself therefore and anoint thee, and put on thy best garments, and go down to the barnfloor: but let not the man see thee, till he shall have done eating and drinking. |
| 4 Quand il s'en ira dormir, remarque le lieu où il dormira ; tu y viendras, et tu découvriras la couverture dont il sera couvert du côté des pieds, et tu te jetteras (coucheras) là et y dormiras. Il te dira lui-même ensuite ce que tu dois faire. | 4 And when he shall go to sleep, mark the place wherein he sleepeth: and thou shalt go in, and lift up the clothes wherewith he is covered towards his feet, and shalt lay thyself down there: and he will tell thee what thou must do. |
| 5 Ruth lui répondit : Je ferai tout ce que vous me commanderez. | 5 She answered: Whatsoever thou shalt command, I will do. |
| 6 Elle alla donc à l'aire de Booz, et fit tout ce que sa belle-mère lui avait commandé. | 6 And she went down to the barnfloor, and did all that her mother in law had bid her. |
| 7 Et lorsque Booz, après avoir bu et mangé, et être devenu plus gai, s'en alla dormir près d'un (du) tas de gerbes, elle vint doucement, et, ayant découvert sa couverture du côté des pieds, elle se coucha là. | 7 And when Booz had eaten, and drunk, and was merry, he went to sleep by the heap of sheaves, and she came softly and uncovering his feet, laid herself down. |
| 8 Tout à coup, vers minuit, Booz fut effrayé et se troubla voyant une femme couchée à ses pieds ; | 8 And behold, when it was now midnight the man was afraid, and troubled: and he saw a woman lying at his feet, |
| 9 et il lui dit : Qui es-tu ? Elle lui répondit : Je suis Ruth, votre servante ; étendez votre couverture sur votre servante, parce que vous êtes mon proche parent. | 9 And he said to her: Who art thou? And she answered: I am Ruth thy handmaid: spread thy coverlet over thy servant, for thou art a near kinsman. |
| 10 Booz lui dit : Ma fille, que le Seigneur te bénisse (tu es bénie du Seigneur) ; cette dernière bonté (miséricorde) que tu témoignes dépasse encore la première, parce que tu n'es pas allée chercher de jeunes gens, pauvres ou riches. | 10 And he said: Blessed art thou of the Lord, my daughter, and thy latter kindness has surpassed the former: because thou hast not followed young men either poor or rich. |
| 11 Ne crains donc point, je ferai (pour toi) tout ce que tu me diras ; car tout le peuple de cette ville sait que tu es une femme vertueuse. | 11 Fear not therefore, but whatsoever thou shalt say to me I will do to thee. For all the people that dwell within the gates of my city, know that thou art a virtuous woman. |
| 12 Pour moi, je ne désavoue pas que je sois ton parent ; mais il y en a un autre plus proche que moi. | 12 Neither do I deny myself to be near of kin, but there is another nearer than I. |
| 13 Repose-toi cette nuit ; et aussitôt que le matin sera venu, s'il veut te retenir par son droit de parenté, tout sera bien ; s'il ne le veut pas, je te jure par le Seigneur qu'indubitablement (le Seigneur vit !) je te prendrai. Dors là jusqu'au matin. | 13 Rest thou this night: and when morning is come, if he will take thee by the right of kindred, all is well: but if he will not, I will undoubtedly take thee, as the Lord liveth: sleep till the morning. |
| 14 Elle dormit donc à ses pieds jusqu'à ce que la nuit fût passée ; et elle se leva le matin, avant que les hommes se pussent entre-connaître. Booz lui dit encore : Prends bien garde que personne ne sache que tu es venue ici. | 14 So she slept at his feet till the night was going off. And she arose before men could know one another, and Booz said: Beware lest any man know that thou camest hither. |
| 15 Et il ajouta : Etends le manteau que tu as sur toi, et tiens-le bien des deux mains. Ruth l'ayant étendu et le tenant, il lui mesura six boisseaux d'orge et les chargea sur elle. Elle rentra à la ville en les portant, | 15 And again he said: Spread thy mantle, wherewith thou art covered, and hold it with both hands. And when she spread it and held it, he measured six measures of barley, and laid it upon her. And she carried it and went into the city, |
| 16 et vint trouver sa belle-mère, qui lui dit : Ma fille, qu'as-tu fait ? Elle lui raconta tout ce que Booz avait fait pour elle, | 16 And came to her mother in law; who said to her: What hast thou done, daughter? And she told her all that the man had done to her. |
| 17 et elle lui dit : Voilà six boisseaux d'orge qu'il m'a donnés, en me disant : Je ne veux pas que tu retournes vers ta belle-mère les mains vides. | 17 And she said: Behold he hath given me six measures of barley: for he said: I will not have thee return empty to thy mother in law. |
| 18 Noémi lui dit : Attends, ma fille, jusqu'à ce que nous voyons l'issue de cette affaire. Car c'est un homme à n'avoir aucun repos qu'il n'ait accompli tout ce qu'il a dit. | 18 And Noemi said: Wait my daughter, till we see what end the thing will have. For the man will not rest until he have accomplished what he hath said. |
