| 1 Josué, s'étant donc levé avant le jour, décampa ; et étant sortis de Sétim, lui et tous les enfants d'Israël, ils vinrent jusqu'au Jourdain, où ils demeurèrent trois jours. | 1 Early in the morning Joshua rose and set out from Shittim, with all the people of Israel; and they came to the Jordan, and lodged there before they passed over. |
| 2 (Et) Ce temps expiré, les hérauts passèrent par le milieu du camp, | 2 At the end of three days the officers went through the camp |
| 3 et commencèrent à crier : Quand vous verrez l'arche de l'alliance du Seigneur votre Dieu, et les prêtres de la race de Lévi qui la porteront, levez-vous aussi, marchez à leur suite, | 3 and commanded the people, "When you see the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God being carried by the Levitical priests, then you shall set out from your place and follow it, |
| 4 et qu'il y ait entre vous et l'arche un espace de deux mille coudées, afin que vous la puissiez voir de loin, et connaître le chemin par où vous irez ; car vous n'avez jamais passé ; et prenez garde de ne point vous approcher de l'arche. | 4 that you may know the way you shall go, for you have not passed this way before. Yet there shall be a space between you and it, a distance of about two thousand cubits; do not come near it." |
| 5 Josué dit aussi au peuple : Sanctifiez-vous, car le Seigneur fera demain des choses merveilleuses parmi vous. | 5 And Joshua said to the people, "Sanctify yourselves; for tomorrow the LORD will do wonders among you." |
| 6 Et (Puis) il dit aux prêtres : Prenez l'arche d'alliance, et marchez devant le peuple. Ils firent ce qu'il leur avait demandé ; et, ayant pris l'arche, ils marchèrent devant le peuple. | 6 And Joshua said to the priests, "Take up the ark of the covenant, and pass on before the people." And they took up the ark of the covenant, and went before the people. |
| 7 Alors le Seigneur dit à Josué : Je commencerai aujourd'hui à t'exalter devant tout Israël ; afin qu'ils sachent que je suis avec toi comme je l'ai été avec Moïse. | 7 And the LORD said to Joshua, "This day I will begin to exalt you in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that, as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. |
| 8 Donne donc cet ordre aux prêtres qui portent l'arche d'alliance, et dis-leur : Lorsque vous serez au milieu (dans une partie) de l'eau du Jourdain, arrêtez-vous là. | 8 And you shall command the priests who bear the ark of the covenant, 'When you come to the brink of the waters of the Jordan, you shall stand still in the Jordan.'" |
| 9 Alors Josué dit aux enfants d'Israël : Approchez-vous, et écoutez la parole du Seigneur votre Dieu. | 9 And Joshua said to the people of Israel, "Come hither, and hear the words of the LORD your God." |
| 10 Puis il ajouta : Vous reconnaîtrez à ceci que le Seigneur, le Dieu vivant, est au milieu de vous, et qu'il exterminera à vos yeux les Chananéens, les Héthéens, les Hévéens, les Phérézéens, les Gergéséens, les Jébuséens et les Amorrhéens. | 10 And Joshua said, "Hereby you shall know that the living God is among you, and that he will without fail drive out from before you the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Hivites, the Perizzites, the Girgashites, the Amorites, and the Jebusites. |
| 11 (Voilà que) L'arche de l'alliance du Seigneur de toute la terre marchera devant vous à travers le Jourdain. | 11 Behold, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth is to pass over before you into the Jordan. |
| 12 Tenez prêts douze hommes des douze tribus d'Israël, un de chaque tribu. | 12 Now therefore take twelve men from the tribes of Israel, from each tribe a man. |
| 13 Et lorsque les prêtres qui portent l'arche du Seigneur, le Dieu de toute la terre, auront mis le pied dans les eaux du Jourdain, les eaux d'en bas s'écouleront et laisseront le fleuve à sec ; mais celles qui viennent d'en haut s'arrêteront et demeureront suspendues. | 13 And when the soles of the feet of the priests who bear the ark of the LORD, the Lord of all the earth, shall rest in the waters of the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan shall be stopped from flowing, and the waters coming down from above shall stand in one heap." |
| 14 Le peuple sortit donc de ses tentes pour passer le Jourdain : et les prêtres qui portaient l'arche d'alliance marchaient devant lui. | 14 So, when the people set out from their tents, to pass over the Jordan with the priests bearing the ark of the covenant before the people, |
| 15 Et aussitôt que ces prêtres furent entrés dans le Jourdain, et que l'eau commença à mouiller leurs pieds (c'était au temps de la moisson, où le Jourdain regorgeait par-dessus ses bords), | 15 and when those who bore the ark had come to the Jordan, and the feet of the priests bearing the ark were dipped in the brink of the water (the Jordan overflows all its banks throughout the time of harvest), |
| 16 les eaux qui venaient d'en haut s'arrêtèrent en un même lieu, et, s'élevant comme une montagne, elles paraissaient de bien loin, depuis la ville qui s'appelle Adom, jusqu'au lieu appelé Sarthan ; mais les eaux d'en bas s'écoulèrent dans la mer du désert, qui est appelée maintenant la mer Morte, jusqu'à ce qu'il n'en resta plus du tout. | 16 the waters coming down from above stood and rose up in a heap far off, at Adam, the city that is beside Zarethan, and those flowing down toward the sea of the Arabah, the Salt Sea, were wholly cut off; and the people passed over opposite Jericho. |
| 17 Cependant le peuple marchait vis-à-vis de Jéricho ; et les prêtres qui portaient l'arche de l'alliance du Seigneur se tenaient toujours dans le même état sur la terre sèche au milieu du Jourdain, et tout le peuple passait à travers le canal (lit du fleuve) qui était à sec. | 17 And while all Israel were passing over on dry ground, the priests who bore the ark of the covenant of the LORD stood on dry ground in the midst of the Jordan, until all the nation finished passing over the Jordan. |
