| 1 Quel avantage dirons-nous donc qu'Abraham, notre père, a obtenu selon la chair ? | 1 What shall we say then that Abraham hath found, who is our father according to the flesh. |
| 2 Car si Abraham a été justifié par les œuvres, il a sujet de se glorifier, mais non devant Dieu. | 2 For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory, but not before God. |
| 3 En effet, que dit l'Ecriture ? Abraham crut à Dieu, et cela lui fut imputé à justice. | 3 For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was reputed to him unto justice. |
| 4 Or à celui qui fait une œuvre, le salaire est imputé, non comme une grâce, mais comme une dette. | 4 Now to him that worketh, the reward is not reckoned according to grace, but according to debt. |
| 5 Et à celui qui ne fait pas d'œuvres, mais qui croit en celui qui justifie l'impie, sa foi lui est imputée à justice, selon le décret de la grâce de Dieu. | 5 But to him that worketh not, yet believeth in him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is reputed to justice, according to the purpose of the grace of God. |
| 6 C'est ainsi que David parle du bonheur de l'homme agréable à Dieu, à qui la justice est imputée sans lesœuvres : | 6 As David also termeth the blessedness of a man, to whom God reputeth justice without works: |
| 7 Heureux ceux dont les iniquités sont pardonnées, et dont les péchés sont couverts. | 7 Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. |
| 8 Heureux l'homme à qui Dieu (le Seigneur) n'a pas imputé de péché. | 8 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord hath not imputed sin. |
| 9 Or ce bonheur (cette béatitude) est-il seulement pour les circoncis, ou est-il aussi pour les incirconcis ? Car nous disons que la foi d'Abraham lui fut imputée à justice. | 9 This blessedness then, doth it remain in the circumcision only, or in the uncircumcision also? For we say that unto Abraham faith was reputed to justice. |
| 10 Comment (Quand) donc lui a-t-elle été imputée ? Est-ce après sa circoncision, ou lorsqu'il était incirconcis ? Ce n'est pas après la circoncision, mais lorsqu'il était incirconcis. | 10 How then was it reputed? When he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision. |
| 11 Et il reçut le signe de la circoncision comme sceau de la justice qu'il avait obtenue par la foi, lorsqu'il était encore incirconcis ; afin d'être le père de tous ceux qui croient n'étant pas circoncis, pour que leur foi leur soit aussi imputée à justice ; | 11 And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the justice of the faith, which he had, being uncircumcised; that he might be the father of all them that believe, being uncircumcised, that unto them also it may be reputed to justice: |
| 12 et d'être le père des circoncis, qui non seulement ont reçu la circoncision, mais encore qui suivent les traces de la foi que notre père Abraham eut lorsqu'il était encore incirconcis. | 12 And might be the father of circumcision; not to them only, that are of the circumcision, but to them also that follow the steps of the faithful, that is in the uncircumcision of our father Abraham. |
| 13 En effet, ce n'est pas par la loi qu'a été faite à Abraham, ou à sa postérité, la promesse d'avoir le monde pour héritage ; mais c'est par la justice de la foi. | 13 For not through the law was the promise to Abraham, or to his seed, that he should be heir of the world; but through the justice of faith. |
| 14 Car si les héritiers le sont par la loi, la foi est rendue vaine, la promesse est abolie. | 14 For if they who are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, the promise is made of no effect. |
| 15 En effet, la loi produit la colère, puisque, là où il n'y a pas de loi, il n'y a pas de transgression (prévarication). | 15 For the law worketh wrath. For where there is no law, neither is there transgression. |
| 16 C'est donc par la foi que vient l'héritage (la promesse), afin qu'elle soit gratuite et assurée à toute la postérité d'Abraham, non seulement à celle qui a reçu la loi, mais encore à celle qui a la foi d'Abraham, notre père à tous. | 16 Therefore is it of faith, that according to grace the promise might be firm to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all, |
| 17 (selon qu'il est écrit : Je t'ai établi le père de nations nombreuses) ; il l'est devant Dieu, auquel il a cru, qui rend la vie aux morts, et qui appelle les choses qui ne sont pas, comme celles qui sont. | 17 (As it is written: I have made thee a father of many nations,) before God, whom he believed, who quickeneth the dead; and calleth those things that are not, as those that are. |
| 18 Ayant espéré contre l'espérance (même), il a cru qu'il deviendrait le père de nations nombreuses, selon qu'il lui avait été dit : Telle sera ta postérité. | 18 Who against hope believed in hope; that he might be made the father of many nations, according to that which was said to him: So shall thy seed be. |
| 19 Il ne s'affaiblit pas dans sa foi, et il ne considéra pas que son corps était usé, puisqu'il avait déjà près de cent ans, et que Sara n'était plus en état d'avoir des enfants. | 19 And he was not weak in faith; neither did he consider his own body now dead, whereas he was almost an hundred years old, nor the dead womb of Sara. |
| 20 Il n'hésita pas, par défiance, au sujet de la promesse, rendant gloire à Dieu, | 20 In the promise also of God he staggered not by distrust; but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God: |
| 21 très pleinement persuadé qu'il est puissant pour faire tout ce qu'il a promis. | 21 Most fully knowing, that whatsoever he has promised, he is able also to perform. |
| 22 C'est pourquoi cela lui a été imputé à justice. | 22 And therefore it was reputed to him unto justice. |
| 23 Mais ce n'est pas pour lui seul qu'il est écrit que cela a été imputé à justice ; | 23 Now it is not written only for him, that it was reputed to him unto justice, |
| 24 c'est aussi pour nous, à qui cela sera imputé de même ; pour nous qui croyons en celui qui a ressuscité d'entre les morts Jésus-Christ Notre Seigneur, | 24 But also for us, to whom it shall be reputed, if we believe in him, that raised up Jesus Christ, our Lord, from the dead, |
| 25 lequel a été livré pour nos péchés, et qui est ressuscité pour notre justification. | 25 Who was delivered up for our sins, and rose again for our justification. |
