| 3 toujours et partout, très excellent Félix, nous recevons ces bienfaits avec toutes sortes d'actions de grâces. | 3 in every way and everywhere we accept this with all gratitude. |
| 4 Mais pour ne pas te retenir plus longuement, je te prie de nous écouter un instant avec ta bienveillance ordinaire. | 4 But, to detain you no further, I beg you in your kindness to hear us briefly. |
| 5 Nous avons trouvé que cet homme pestilentiel excite des séditions chez tous les Juifs dans le monde entier, et qu'il est le chef de la secte séditieuse des Nazaréens. | 5 For we have found this man a pestilent fellow, an agitator among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes. |
| 6 Il a même essayé de profaner le temple. Nous étant saisis de lui, nous voulions le juger selon notre loi ; | 6 He even tried to profane the temple, but we seized him. |
| 7 mais le tribun Lysias, étant survenu, l'a arraché de nos mains avec une grande violence, | 7 . |
| 8 ordonnant à ses accusateurs de venir devant toi ; et tu pourras toi-même, en l'interrogeant, connaître la vérité de tous ces actes dont nous l'accusons. | 8 By examining him yourself you will be able to learn from him about everything of which we accuse him." |
| 9 Les Juifs ajoutèrent à leur tour que les choses étaient ainsi. | 9 The Jews also joined in the charge, affirming that all this was so. |
| 10 Mais Paul répondit, lorsque le gouverneur lui eut fait signe de parler : Sachant que depuis plusieurs années tu gouvernes cette nation, c'est avec confiance que je défendrai ma cause. | 10 And when the governor had motioned to him to speak, Paul replied: "Realizing that for many years you have been judge over this nation, I cheerfully make my defense. |
| 11 Car tu peux savoir qu'il n'y a pas plus de douze jours que je suis monté à Jérusalem pour adorer ; | 11 As you may ascertain, it is not more than twelve days since I went up to worship at Jerusalem; |
| 12 et ils ne m'ont pas trouvé dans le temple disputant avec quelqu'un, ni attroupant la foule, non plus que dans les synagogues, | 12 and they did not find me disputing with any one or stirring up a crowd, either in the temple or in the synagogues, or in the city. |
| 13 et dans la ville ; et ils ne peuvent te prouver ce dont ils m'accusent maintenant. | 13 Neither can they prove to you what they now bring up against me. |
| 14 Mais je t'avoue ceci, que, selon la secte qu'ils appellent hérésie, je sers mon Père et mon Dieu, croyant tout ce qui est écrit dans la loi et les prophètes ; | 14 But this I admit to you, that according to the Way, which they call a sect, I worship the God of our fathers, believing everything laid down by the law or written in the prophets, |
| 15 ayant en Dieu cette espérance, comme ils l'ont eux-mêmes, qu'il y aura une résurrection des justes et des méchants. | 15 having a hope in God which these themselves accept, that there will be a resurrection of both the just and the unjust. |
| 16 C'est pourquoi je travaille moi-même à avoir une conscience sans reproche devant Dieu et devant les hommes. | 16 So I always take pains to have a clear conscience toward God and toward men. |
| 17 Après plusieurs années, je suis venu pour faire à ma nation des aumônes, des offrandes et des vœux. | 17 Now after some years I came to bring to my nation alms and offerings. |
| 18 C'est dans ces circonstances qu'ils m'ont trouvé (purifié) dans le temple, sans amas de foule et sans tumulte. | 18 As I was doing this, they found me purified in the temple, without any crowd or tumult. But some Jews from Asia-- |
| 19 Et ce sont certains Juifs d'Asie, qui auraient dû comparaître devant toi et m'accuser, s'ils avaient quelque chose contre moi ; | 19 they ought to be here before you and to make an accusation, if they have anything against me. |
| 20 ou bien, que ceux-ci mêmes disent s'ils ont trouvé en moi quelque iniquité, lorsque j'ai comparu dans leur assemblée ; | 20 Or else let these men themselves say what wrongdoing they found when I stood before the council, |
| 21 à moins qu'on ne me reproche cette seule parole, que j'ai criée, debout au milieu d'eux : C'est à cause de la résurrection des morts que je suis jugé par vous aujourd'hui. | 21 except this one thing which I cried out while standing among them, 'With respect to the resurrection of the dead I am on trial before you this day.'" |
| 22 Félix, qui connaissait très bien cette doctrine, les ajourna, en disant : Lorsque le tribun Lysias sera descendu, je vous entendrai. | 22 But Felix, having a rather accurate knowledge of the Way, put them off, saying, "When Lysias the tribune comes down, I will decide your case." |
| 23 Puis il ordonna au centurion de garder Paul, mais de lui laisser du repos et de n'empêcher aucun des siens de le servir. | 23 Then he gave orders to the centurion that he should be kept in custody but should have some liberty, and that none of his friends should be prevented from attending to his needs. |
| 24 Quelques jours après, Félix étant venu avec Drusille, sa femme, qui était Juive, appela Paul, et l'entendit parler de la foi en Jésus-Christ. | 24 After some days Felix came with his wife Drusilla, who was a Jewess; and he sent for Paul and heard him speak upon faith in Christ Jesus. |
| 25 Mais comme il discourait sur la justice, sur la chasteté, et sur le jugement futur, Félix effrayé répondit : Pour le moment, retire-toi ; en temps opportun, je t'appellerai. | 25 And as he argued about justice and self-control and future judgment, Felix was alarmed and said, "Go away for the present; when I have an opportunity I will summon you." |
| 26 En outre il espérait que Paul lui donnerait de l'argent ; c'est pourquoi aussi il le faisait venir souvent, et s'entretenait avec lui. | 26 At the same time he hoped that money would be given him by Paul. So he sent for him often and conversed with him. |
| 27 Deux ans s'étant écoulés, Félix eut pour successeur Portius Festus ; et voulant faire plaisir aux Juifs, il laissa Paul en prison. | 27 But when two years had elapsed, Felix was succeeded by Porcius Festus; and desiring to do the Jews a favor, Felix left Paul in prison. |
