| 1 Lorsqu'il eut achevé de faire entendre au peuple toutes ces paroles, il entra dans Capharnaüm. | 1 And when he had finished all his words in the hearing of the people, he entered into Capharnaum. |
| 2 Or un centurion avait un serviteur malade et sur le point de mourir, qui lui était très cher. | 2 And the servant of a certain centurion, who was dear to him, being sick, was ready to die. |
| 3 Et ayant entendu parler de Jésus, il lui envoya quelques anciens des Juifs, Le priant de venir et de guérir son serviteur. | 3 And when he had heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the ancients of the Jews, desiring him to come and heal his servant. |
| 4 Ceux-ci, étant venus auprès de Jésus, le priaient avec instance, en lui disant : Il mérite que vous lui accordiez cela ; | 4 And when they came to Jesus, they besought him earnestly, saying to him: He is worthy that thou shouldest do this for him. |
| 5 car il aime notre nation, et il nous a lui-même bâti une synagogue. | 5 For he loveth our nation; and he hath built us a synagogue. |
| 6 Et Jésus allait avec eux. Et comme il n'était plus guère éloigné de la maison, le centurion lui envoya de ses amis, pour lui dire : Seigneur, ne prenez pas tant de peine, car je ne suis pas digne que vous entriez sous mon toit. | 6 And Jesus went with them. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent his friends to him, saying: Lord, trouble not thyself; for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof. |
| 7 C'est pour cela que je ne me suis pas cru digne de venir moi-même auprès de vous ; mais dites un mot, et mon serviteur sera guéri. | 7 For which cause neither did I think myself worthy to come to thee; but say the word, and my servant shall be healed. |
| 8 Car moi, qui suis un homme soumis à des chefs, j'ai sous moi des soldats ; et je dis à l'un : Va, et il va ; et à l'autre : Viens, et il vient ; et à mon serviteur : Fais ceci, et il le fait. | 8 For I also am a man subject to authority, having under me soldiers: and I say to one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doth it. |
| 9 Ayant entendu ces paroles, Jésus fut dans l'admiration ; et se tournant vers les foules qui le suivaient, il dit : En vérité, je vous le dis, même en Israël je n'ai pas trouvé une aussi grande foi. | 9 Which Jesus hearing, marvelled: and turning about to the multitude that followed him, he said: Amen I say to you, I have not found so great faith, not even in Israel. |
| 10 De retour à la maison, ceux que le centurion avait envoyés trouvèrent guéri le serviteur qui avait été malade. | 10 And they who were sent, being returned to the house, found the servant whole who had been sick. |
| 11 Il arriva ensuite que Jésus allait dans une ville appelée Naïm ; et ses disciples allaient avec lui, ainsi qu'une foule nombreuse. | 11 And it came to pass afterwards, that he went into a city that is called Naim; and there went with him his disciples, and a great multitude. |
| 12 Et comme il approchait de la porte de la ville, voici qu'on emportait un mort, fils unique de sa mère, et celle-ci était veuve ; et il y avait avec elle beaucoup de personnes de la ville. | 12 And when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold a dead man was carried out, the only son of his mother; and she was a widow: and a great multitude of the city was with her. |
| 13 Lorsque le Seigneur l'eut vue, touché de compassion pour elle, il lui dit : Ne pleure pas. | 13 Whom when the Lord had seen, being moved with mercy towards her, he said to her: Weep not. |
| 14 Puis il s'approcha, et toucha le cercueil. Ceux qui le portaient s'arrêtèrent. Et il dit : Jeune homme, je te l'ordonne, lève-toi. | 14 And he came near and touched the bier. And they that carried it, stood still. And he said: Young man, I say to thee, arise. |
| 15 Et le mort se mit sur son séant, et commença à parler. Et Jésus le rendit à sa mère. | 15 And he that was dead, sat up, and began to speak. And he gave him to his mother. |
| 16 Tous furent saisis de crainte, et ils glorifiaient Dieu, en disant : Un grand prophète a surgi parmi nous, et Dieu a visité son peuple. | 16 And there came a fear on them all: and they glorified God, saying: A great prophet is risen up among us: and, God hath visited his people. |
| 17 Et le bruit de ce miracle se répandit dans toute la Judée, et dans tout le pays d'alentour. | 17 And this rumour of him went forth throughout all Judea, and throughout all the country round about. |
| 18 Les disciples de Jean lui rapportèrent toutes ces choses. | 18 And John's disciples told him of all these things. |
| 19 Et Jean appela deux de ses disciples, et les envoya vers Jésus, pour lui dire : Etes-vous celui qui doit venir, ou devons-nous en attendre un autre ? | 19 And John called to him two of his disciples, and sent them to Jesus, saying: Art thou he that art to come; or look we for another? |
| 20 Ces hommes, étant venus auprès de Jésus, lui dirent : Jean-Baptiste nous a envoyés vers vous, pour vous dire : Etes-vous celui qui doit venir, ou devons-nous en attendre un autre ? | 20 And when the men were come unto him, they said: John the Baptist hath sent us to thee, saying: Art thou he that art to come; or look we for another? |
| 21 A cette heure même, il guérit beaucoup de personnes qui avaient des maladies, et des plaies, et des esprits mauvais, et il rendit la vue à de nombreux aveugles. | 21 (And in that same hour, he cured many of their diseases, and hurts, and evil spirits: and to many that were blind he gave sight.) |
| 22 Puis, leur répondant, il dit : Allez, et rapportez à Jean ce que vous avez entendu et ce que vous avez vu : les aveugles voient, les boiteux marchent, les lépreux sont guéris, les sourds entendent, les morts ressuscitent, l'Evangile est annoncé aux pauvres ; | 22 And answering, he said to them: Go and relate to John what you have heard and seen: the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are made clean, the deaf hear, the dead rise again, to the poor the gospel is preached: |
| 23 et bienheureux est celui qui ne sera pas scandalisé en moi. | 23 And blessed is he whosoever shall not be scandalized in me. |
| 24 Lorsque les envoyés de Jean furent partis, il se mit à dire aux foules, au sujet de Jean : Qu'êtes-vous allés voir dans le désert ? Un roseau agité par le vent ? | 24 And when the messengers of John were departed, he began to speak to the multitudes concerning John. What went ye out into the desert to see? a reed shaken with the wind? |
| 25 Mais qu'êtes-vous allés voir ? Un homme vêtu avec mollesse ? Ceux qui portent des vêtements précieux et qui vivent dans les délices sont dans les maisons des rois. | 25 But what went you out to see? a man clothed in soft garments? Behold they that are in costly apparel and live delicately, are in the houses of kings. |
| 26 Qu'êtes-vous donc allés voir ? Un prophète ? Oui, vous dis-je, et plus qu'un prophète. | 26 But what went you out to see? a prophet? Yea, I say to you, and more than a prophet. |
| 27 C'est de lui qu'il est écrit : Voici que j'envoie mon ange devant ta face, et il préparera ton chemin devant toi. | 27 This is he of whom it is written: Behold I send my angel before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee. |
| 28 Car, je vous le dis, parmi ceux qui sont nés des femmes, nul n'est plus grand prophète que Jean-Baptiste. Mais celui qui est le plus petit dans le royaume de Dieu est plus grand que lui. | 28 For I say to you: Amongst those that are born of women, there is not a greater prophet that John the Baptist. But he that is the lesser in the kingdom of God, is greater than he. |
| 29 Tout le peuple qui l'a entendu, et les publicains, ont justifié Dieu, en se faisant baptiser du baptême de Jean. | 29 And all the people hearing, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with John's baptism. |
| 30 Mais les pharisiens et les docteurs de la loi ont méprisé le dessein de Dieu à leur égard, en ne se faisant pas baptiser par Jean. | 30 But the Pharisees and the lawyers despised the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized by him. |
| 31 Le Seigneur ajouta : A qui donc comparerai-je les hommes de cette génération, et à qui sont-ils semblables ? | 31 And the Lord said: Whereunto then shall I liken the men of this generation? and to what are they like? |
| 32 Ils sont semblables à des enfants assis sur la place publique, et qui, se parlant les uns aux autres, disent : Nous vous avons joué de la flûte, et vous n'avez pas dansé ; nous avons chanté des airs lugubres, et vous n'avez pas pleuré. | 32 They are like to children sitting in the marketplace, and speaking one to another, and saying: We have piped to you, and you have not danced: we have mourned, and you have not wept. |
| 33 Car Jean-Baptiste est venu, ne mangeant pas de pain, et ne buvant pas de vin ; et vous dites : Il est possédé du démon. | 33 For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine; and you say: He hath a devil. |
| 34 Le Fils de l'homme est venu, mangeant et buvant ; et vous dites : Voici un homme de bonne chère et un buveur de vin, un ami des publicains et des pécheurs. | 34 The Son of man is come eating and drinking: and you say: Behold a man that is a glutton and a drinker of wine, a friend of publicans and sinners. |
| 35 Mais la sagesse a été justifiée par tous ses enfants. | 35 And wisdom is justified by all her children. |
| 36 Or un pharisien pria Jésus de manger avec lui. Et étant entré dans la maison du pharisien, il se mit à table. | 36 And one of the Pharisees desired him to eat with him. And he went into the house of the Pharisee, and sat down to meat. |
| 37 Et voici qu'une femme, qui était une pécheresse dans la ville, ayant su qu'il était à table dans la maison du pharisien, apporta un vase d'albâtre rempli de parfum ; | 37 And behold a woman that was in the city, a sinner, when she knew that he sat at meat in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster box of ointment; |
| 38 et se tenant derrière lui, à ses pieds, elle se mit à arroser ses pieds de ses larmes, et elle les essuyait avec les cheveux de sa tête, et elle baisait ses pieds et les oignait de parfum. | 38 And standing behind at his feet, she began to wash his feet, with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment. |
| 39 Voyant cela, le pharisien qui l'avait invité dit en lui-même : Si cet homme était prophète, il saurait certainement qui et de quelle espèce est la femme qui le touche ; car c'est une pécheresse. | 39 And the Pharisee, who had invited him, seeing it, spoke within himself, saying: This man, if he were a prophet, would know surely who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him, that she is a sinner. |
| 40 Et Jésus, prenant la parole, lui dit : Simon, j'ai quelque chose à te dire. Il répondit : Maître, dites. | 40 And Jesus answering, said to him: Simon, I have somewhat to say to thee. But he said: Master, say it. |
| 41 Un créancier avait deux débiteurs : l'un devait cinq cents deniers, et l'autre cinquante. | 41 A certain creditor had two debtors, the one who owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty. |
| 42 Comme ils n'avaient pas de quoi les rendre, il leur remit à tous deux leur dette. Lequel donc l'aimera davantage ? | 42 And whereas they had not wherewith to pay, he forgave them both. Which therefore of the two loveth him most? |
| 43 Simon répondit : Je pense que c'est celui auquel il a remis davantage. Jésus lui dit : Tu as bien jugé. | 43 Simon answering, said: I suppose that he to whom he forgave most. And he said to him: Thou hast judged rightly. |
| 44 Et se tournant vers la femme, il dit à Simon : Tu vois là cette femme ? Je suis entré dans ta maison : tu ne m'as pas donné d'eau pour mes pieds ; mais elle a arrosé mes pieds des ses larmes, et elle les a essuyés avec ses cheveux. | 44 And turning to the woman, he said unto Simon: Dost thou see this woman? I entered into thy house, thou gavest me no water for my feet; but she with tears hath washed my feet, and with her hairs hath wiped them. |
| 45 Tu ne m'as pas donné de baiser ; mais elle, depuis qu'elle est entrée, n'a pas cessé de baiser mes pieds. | 45 Thou gavest me no kiss; but she, since she came in, hath not ceased to kiss my feet. |
| 46 Tu n'as pas oint ma tête d'huile ; mais elle, elle a oint mes pieds de parfum. | 46 My head with oil thou didst not anoint; but she with ointment hath anointed my feet. |
| 47 C'est pourquoi, je te le dis, beaucoup de péchés lui sont remis, parce qu'elle a beaucoup aimé. Mais celui à qui on remet moins, aime moins. | 47 Wherefore I say to thee: Many sins are forgiven her, because she hath loved much. But to whom less is forgiven, he loveth less. |
| 48 Alors il dit à cette femme : Tes péchés te sont remis. | 48 And he said to her: Thy sins are forgiven thee. |
| 49 Et ceux qui étaient à table avec lui commencèrent à dire en eux-mêmes : Quel est celui-ci, qui remet même les péchés ? | 49 And they that sat at meat with him began to say within themselves: Who is this that forgiveth sins also? |
| 50 Et il dit à la femme : Ta foi t'a sauvée ; va en paix. | 50 And he said to the woman: Thy faith hath made thee safe, go in peace. |
