| 1 Arad, roi des Chananéens, qui habitait vers le midi, ayant appris qu'Israël était venu par le chemin des espions, combattit contre Israël, et l'ayant vaincu, il emporta des dépouilles. | 1 And when king Arad the Chanaanite, who dwelt towards the south, had heard this, to wit, that Israel was come by the way of the spies, he fought against them, and overcoming them carried off their spoils. |
| 2 Mais Israël s'engagea par un vœu au Seigneur, en disant : Si vous livrez ce peuple entre mes mains, je ruinerai ses villes. | 2 But Israel binding himself by vow to the Lord, said: It thou wilt deliver this people into my hand, I will utterly destroy their cities. |
| 3 (Et) Le Seigneur exauça les prières d'Israël, et lui livra les Chananéens, qu'il fit passer au fil de l'épée, ayant détruit leurs villes ; et il appela ce lieu Horma, c'est-à-dire anathème. | 3 And the Lord heard the prayers of Israel, and delivered up the Chanaanite, and they cut them off and destroyed their cities: and they called the name of that place Horma, that is to say, Anathema. |
| 4 Ensuite ils partirent de la montagne de Hor par le chemin qui mène à la mer Rouge, pour contourner le pays d'Edom. Et le peuple commença à s'ennuyer du chemin et du travail (de la fatigue) ; | 4 And they marched from mount Hor, by the way that leadeth to the Red Sea, to compass the land of Edom. And the people began to be weary of their journey and labour: |
| 5 il parla contre Dieu et contre Moïse, auquel il dit : Pourquoi nous avez-vous (re)tirés de l'Egypte, afin de nous faire mourir dans ce désert ? Le pain nous manque, nous n'avons point d'eau ; notre âme n'a plus que du dégoût pour cette nourriture si légère. | 5 And speaking against God end Moses, they said: Why didst thou bring us out of Egypt, to die in the wilderness? There is no bread, nor have we any waters: our soul now loatheth this very light food. |
| 6 C'est pourquoi le Seigneur envoya contre le peuple des serpents brûlants, par lesquels un grand nombre furent blessés ou tués. | 6 Wherefore the Lord sent among the people fiery serpents, which bit them and killed many of them. |
| 7 Ils vinrent alors à Moïse, et lui dirent : Nous avons péché, en parlant contre le Seigneur et contre toi ; prie-le qu'il ôte ces serpents du milieu de nous. Moïse pria donc pour le peuple. | 7 Upon which they came to Moses, and said: We have sinned, because we have spoken against the Lord and thee: pray that he may take away these serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people. |
| 8 Et le Seigneur lui dit : Fais un serpent d'airain, et mets-le pour servir de signe ; celui qui, ayant été blessé des serpents, le regardera, sera guéri. | 8 And the Lord said to him: Make brazen serpent, and set it up for a sign: whosoever being struck shall look on it, shall live. |
| 9 Moïse fit donc un serpent d'airain, et il le mit pour servir de signe ; et les blessés qui le regardaient étaient guéris. | 9 Moses therefore made a brazen serpent, and set it up for a sign: which when they that were bitten looked upon, they were healed. |
| 10 (Or) Les enfants d'Israël, étant partis de ce lieu, campèrent à Oboth, | 10 And the children of Israel setting forwards camped in Oboth. |
| 11 d'où, étant sortis, ils dressèrent leurs tentes à Jéabarim, dans le désert qui regarde Moab vers l'orient. | 11 And departing thence they pitched their tents in Jeabarim, in the wilderness, that faceth Moab toward the east. |
| 12 Ayant décampé de ce lieu, ils vinrent au torrent de Zared, | 12 And removing from thence, they came to the torrent Zared: |
| 13 qu'ils laissèrent ; et ils campèrent vis-à-vis de l'Arnon, qui est dans le désert, et qui est situé près de la frontière des Amorrhéens. Car l'Arnon est à l'extrémité de Moab, et sépare les Moabites des Amorrhéens. | 13 Which they left and encamped over against Arnon, which is in the desert and standeth out on the borders of the Amorrhite. For Arnon is the border of Moab, dividing the Moabites and the Amorrhites. |
| 14 C'est pourquoi il est écrit dans le livre des guerres du Seigneur : Il fera dans les torrents de l'Arnon ce qu'il a fait dans la mer Rouge. | 14 Wherefore it is said in the book of the wars of the Lord: As he did in the Red Sea, so will he do in the streams of Amen. |
| 15 Les rochers des torrents se sont abaissés pour descendre vers Ar, et se reposer sur les confins des Moabites. | 15 The rocks of the torrents were bowed down that they might rest in Ar, and lie down in the borders of the Moabites. |
| 16 Au sortir de ce lieu parut le puits dont le Seigneur parla à Moïse, en lui disant : Assemble le peuple, et je lui donnerai de l'eau. | 16 When they went from that place, the well appeared whereof the Lord said to Moses: Gather the people together, and I will give them water. |
| 17 Alors Israël chanta ce cantique : Que le puits monte. Et ils chantaient tous ensemble : | 17 Then Israel sung this song: Let the well spring up. They sung thereto: |
| 18 C'est le puits que les princes ont creusé, que les chefs du peuple ont préparé, par l'ordre de celui qui a donné la loi, et avec leurs bâtons. De ce désert le peuple vint à Matthana ; | 18 The well, which the princes dug, and the chiefs of the people prepared by the direction of the lawgiver, and with their staves. And they marched from the wilderness to Mathana. |
| 19 de Matthana à Nahaliel, de Nahaliel à Bamoth. | 19 From Mathana unto Nahaliel: from Nahaliel unto Bamoth. |
| 20 De (Après) Bamoth, on vint à (est) une vallée dans le pays de Moab, près de la montagne de Phasga, qui regarde (contre) le désert. | 20 From Bamoth, is a valley in the country of Moab, to the top of Phasga, which looked towards the desert. |
| 21 Israël envoya de là des ambassadeurs à Séhon, roi des Amorrhéens, pour lui dire : | 21 And Israel sent messengers to Sehon king of the Amorrhites, saying: |
| 22 Nous te supplions de nous permettre de passer par ton pays. Nous ne nous détournerons point ni dans les champs mi dans les vignes ; nous ne boirons point des eaux de tes puits ; mais nous marcherons par la voie publique, jusqu'à ce que nous soyons passés hors de tes terres. | 22 I beseech thee that I may have leave to pass through thy land: we will not go aside into the fields or the vineyards, we will not drink waters of the wells, we will go the king's highway, till we be past thy borders. |
| 23 Séhon ne voulut point permettre qu'Israël passât par son pays ; et ayant même assemblé son armée, il marcha au-devant de lui dans le désert, vint à Jasa, et lui donna la bataille. | 23 And he would not grant that Israel should pass by his borders: but rather gathering an army, went forth to meet them in the desert, and came to Jasa, and fought against them. |
| 24 Mais il fut taillé en pièces par Israël, qui se rendit maître de son royaume, depuis l'Arnon jusqu'au Jeboc, et jusqu'aux enfants d'Ammon ; car la frontière des Ammonites étaient défendue par de fortes garnisons. | 24 And he was slain by them with the edge of the sword, and they possessed his land from the Arnon unto the Jeboc, and to the confines of the children of Ammon: for the borders of the Ammonites, were kept with a strong garrison. |
| 25 Israël prit donc toutes les villes de ce prince ; et il habita dans les villes des Amorrhéens, c'est-à-dire dans Hésébon et dans les bourgs de son territoire. | 25 So Israel took all his cities, and dwelt in the cities of the Amorrhite, to wit, in Hesebon, and in the villages thereof. |
| 26 Car la ville d'Hésébon appartenait à Séhon, roi des Amorrhéens, qui avait combattu contre le roi de Moab, et lui avait pris toutes les terres qu'il possédait jusqu'à l'Arnon. | 26 Hesebon was the city of Sehon the king of the Amorrhites, who fought against the king of Moab: and took all the land, that had been of his dominions, as far as the Arnon. |
| 27 C'est pourquoi on dit en proverbe : Venez à Hésébon ; que la ville de Séhon s'élève et se rebâtisse (bâtie et construite). | 27 Therefore it is said in the proverb: Come into Hesebon, let the city of Sehon be built and set up: |
| 28 Le (Un) feu est sorti d'Hésébon, la flamme est sortie de (la ville de) Séhon, et elle a dévoré Ar des Moabites, et les habitants des hauts lieux de l'Arnon. | 28 A fire is gone out of Hesebon, a flame from the city of Sehon, and hath consumed Ar of the Moabites, and the inhabitants of the high places of the Arnon. |
| 29 Malheur à toi, Moab ! tu es perdu (as péri), peuple de Chamos. Chamos a laissé fuir ses enfants (fils), et a livré ses filles captives à Séhon, roi des Amorrhéens. | 29 Woe to thee Moab: thou art undone, O people of Chamos. He hath given his sons to flight, and his daughters into captivity to Sehon the king of the Amorrhites. |
| 30 Le joug dont ils opprimaient Hésébon a été brisé jusqu'à Dibon. Ils sont venus, tout lassés de leur fuite, à Nophé, et jusqu'à Médaba. | 30 Their yoke is perished from Hesebon unto Dibon, they came weary to Nophe, and unto Medaba. |
| 31 Israël habita donc dans le pays des Amorrhéens. | 31 So Israel dwelt in the land of the Amorrhite. |
| 32 Moïse envoya ensuite reconnaître Jazer, et ils prirent les villages qui en dépendaient, et se rendirent maîtres des habitants. | 32 And Moses sent some to take a view of Jazer: and they took the villages of it, and conquered the inhabitants. |
| 33 Ils changèrent ensuite de direction, et montèrent par le chemin de Basan. Og, roi de Basan, vint au devant d'eux (avec tout son peuple,) pour les combattre à Edraï. | 33 And they turned themselves, and went up by the way of Basan, and Og the king of Basan came against them with all his people, to fight in Edrai. |
| 34 Et le Seigneur dit à Moïse : Ne le crains point, parce que je l'ai livré entre tes mains avec tout son peuple et son pays ; et tu le traiteras comme tu as traité Séhon, roi des Amorrhéens, qui habitait à Hésébon. | 34 And the Lord said to Moses: Fear him not, for I have delivered him and all his people, and his country into thy hand: and thou shalt do to him as thou didst to Sehon the king of the Amorrhites, the inhabitant of Hesebon. |
| 35 Ils taillèrent donc en pièces ce roi, avec ses enfants et tout son peuple, sans qu'il en restât un seul, et ils se rendirent maîtres de son pays. | 35 So they slew him also with his sons, and all his people, not letting any one escape, and they possessed his land. |
