| 1 La parole du Seigneur fut adressée une seconde fois à Jonas, en ces termes (disant, note) : | 1 And the word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time, saying: |
| 2 Lève-toi, et va à Ninive, la grande ville, et prêches-y la prédication que je t'ordonne. | 2 Rise, and go to Nineveh, the great city. And preach in it the preaching that I say to you. |
| 3 Jonas se leva et alla à Ninive, selon la parole du Seigneur ; or Ninive était une grande ville, de trois jours de marche. | 3 And Jonah rose, and he went to Nineveh in accordance with the word of the Lord. And Nineveh was a great city of three days’ journey. |
| 4 Et Jonas commença à entrer dans la ville pendant un jour de marche (à faire le chemin d'un jour) ; et il cria, en disant : Encore quarante jours, et Ninive sera détruite (renversée). | 4 And Jonah began to enter into the city one day’s journey. And he cried out and said, “Forty days more and Nineveh shall be destroyed.” |
| 5 Les Ninivites crurent à Dieu ; ils publièrent un jeûne et se couvrirent de sacs, depuis le plus grand jusqu'au plus petit. | 5 And the men of Nineveh believed in God. And they proclaimed a fast, and they put on sackcloth, from the greatest all the way to the least. |
| 6 La chose parvint au roi de Ninive et il se leva de son trône, ôta son vêtement, se couvrit d'un sac et s'assit sur la cendre. | 6 And word reached the king of Nineveh. And he rose from his throne, and he threw off his robe from himself and was clothed in sackcloth, and he sat in ashes. |
| 7 Il fit crier et publier dans Ninive cet ordre, comme venant de la bouche du roi et de ses princes : Que les hommes et les bêtes, les bœufs et les brebis ne goûtent rien ; qu'ils ne paissent point, et ne boivent pas d'eau. | 7 And he cried out and spoke: “In Nineveh, from the mouth of the king and of his princes, let it be said: Men and beasts and oxen and sheep may not taste anything. Neither shall they feed or drink water. |
| 8 Que les hommes et les bêtes soient couverts de sacs, et qu'ils crient au Seigneur avec force ; et que chacun revienne de sa voie mauvaise, et de l'iniquité qui est dans ses mains. | 8 And let men and beasts be covered with sackcloth, and let them cry out to the Lord with strength, and may man be converted from his evil way, and from the iniquity that is in their hands. |
| 9 Qui sait si Dieu ne se retournera pas pour pardonner, s'il n'apaisera pas la fureur de sa colère, de sorte que nous ne périssions pas ? | 9 Who knows if God may turn and forgive, and may turn away from his furious wrath, so that we might not perish?” |
| 10 Dieu vit leurs œuvres, il vit qu'ils étaient revenus de leur voie mauvaise ; et il se repentit du mal qu'il avait résolu de leur faire, et il ne le fit pas. | 10 And God saw their works, that they had been converted from their evil way. And God took pity on them, concerning the harm that he had said he would do to them, and he did not do it. |
