| 2 Il prit une femme nommée Susanne, fille d'Helcias, parfaitement belle et craignant Dieu ; | 2 who married a very beautiful and God-fearing woman, Susanna, the daughter of Hilkiah; |
| 3 car ses parents, qui étaient justes, avaient instruit leur fille selon la loi de Moïse. | 3 her pious parents had trained their daughter according to the law of Moses. |
| 4 Or Joakim était très riche, et il avait un jardin fruitier (verger) près de sa maison ; et les Juifs affluaient (souvent) chez lui, parce qu'il était le plus honorable (considérable) de tous. | 4 Joakim was very rich; he had a garden near his house, and the Jews had recourse to him often because he was the most respected of them all. |
| 5 On avait établi pour juges, cette année-là, deux vieillards d'entre le peuple ; c'est d'eux que le Seigneur a dit : L'iniquité est sortie de Babylone par des vieillards qui étaient juges, qui semblaient conduire le peuple. | 5 That year, two elders of the people were appointed judges, of whom the Lord said, "Wickedness has come out of Babylon: from the elders who were to govern the people as judges." |
| 6 Ceux-là fréquentaient la maison de Joakim, et tous ceux qui avaient des affaires à juger venaient les y trouver (vers eux). | 6 These men, to whom all brought their cases, frequented the house of Joakim. |
| 7 Lorsque la foule était partie, sur le midi, Susanne entrait et se promenait dans le jardin (verger) de son mari. | 7 When the people left at noon, Susanna used to enter her husband's garden for a walk. |
| 8 Ces vieillards l'y voyaient tous les jours entrer et se promener, et ils brûlèrent de passion pour elle ; | 8 When the old men saw her enter every day for her walk, they began to lust for her. |
| 9 ils pervertirent leur sens, et ils détournèrent leurs yeux, pour ne pas voir le ciel et pour ne se pas souvenir des justes jugements. | 9 They suppressed their consciences; they would not allow their eyes to look to heaven, and did not keep in mind just judgments. |
| 10 Ils étaient donc tous deux blessés de son amour, mais ils ne s'entre-dirent pas leur peine ; | 10 Though both were enamored of her, they did not tell each other their trouble, |
| 11 car ils rougissaient de se découvrir l'un à l'autre leur passion, voulant corrompre Susanne (tous l'assouvir). | 11 for they were ashamed to reveal their lustful desire to have her. |
| 12 Et ils cherchaient tous les jours, avec grand soin, à la voir. Ils se dirent l'un à l'autre : | 12 Day by day they watched eagerly for her. |
| 13 Allons chez nous, car c'est l'heure du dîner ; et étant sortis, ils se séparèrent l'un de l'autre. | 13 One day they said to each other, "Let us be off for home, it is time for lunch." So they went out and parted; |
| 14 Mais, revenant aussitôt, ils se rencontrèrent, et, après s'en être demandé mutuellement la raison, ils avouèrent leur passion ; et alors ils fixèrent ensemble un temps où ils pourraient la trouver seule. | 14 but both turned back, and when they met again, they asked each other the reason. They admitted their lust, and then they agreed to look for an occasion when they could meet her alone. |
| 15 Comme ils cherchaient un jour convenable, il arriva que Susanne entra, selon la coutume, accompagnée seulement de deux jeunes filles, et elle voulut se baigner dans le jardin (verger), car il faisait chaud ; | 15 One day, while they were waiting for the right moment, she entered the garden as usual, with two maids only. She decided to bathe, for the weather was warm. |
| 16 et il n'y avait là personne que les deux vieillards, qui étaient cachés et qui la regardaient. | 16 Nobody else was there except the two elders, who had hidden themselves and were watching her. |
| 17 Elle dit donc aux jeunes filles : Apportez-moi de l'huile et des parfums (savons) et fermez les portes du jardin (verger), afin que je me baigne. | 17 "Bring me oil and soap," she said to the maids, "and shut the garden doors while I bathe." |
| 18 Elles firent ce qu'elle avait commandé ; elles fermèrent les portes du jardin (verger) et elles sortirent par une (la) porte de derrière, pour apporter ce qu'elle avait ordonné ; et elles ne savaient pas que les vieillards furent cachés à l'intérieur (du verger). | 18 They did as she said; they shut the garden doors and left by the side gate to fetch what she had ordered, unaware that the elders were hidden inside. |
| 19 Lorsque les jeunes filles (servantes) furent sorties, les deux vieillards se levèrent, coururent à Susanne et lui dirent : | 19 As soon as the maids had left, the two old men got up and hurried to her. |
| 20 Voici, les portes du jardin sont fermées ; personne ne nous voit et nous brûlons de passion pour toi (vous) ; (rendez-vous) rends-toi donc à notre désir et unis-toi (livrez-vous) à nous. | 20 "Look," they said, "the garden doors are shut, and no one can see us; give in to our desire, and lie with us. |
| 21 Si tu (vous) refuses(z), nous témoignerons contre toi (vous), et nous dirons qu'un jeune homme était avec toi (vous), et que c'est pour cela que tu (vous) as(vez) renvoyé tes (vos) jeunes filles. | 21 If you refuse, we will testify against you that you dismissed your maids because a young man was here with you." |
| 22 Susanne gémit (soupira) et dit : L'angoisse m'entoure de tous côtés ; car si je fais cela, c'est la mort pour moi ; si je ne le fais pas, je n'échapperai pas de vos mains. | 22 "I am completely trapped," Susanna groaned. "If I yield, it will be my death; if I refuse, I cannot escape your power. |
| 23 Mais il est meilleur pour moi de tomber sans motif entre vos mains, que de pécher en la présence du Seigneur. | 23 Yet it is better for me to fall into your power without guilt than to sin before the Lord." |
| 24 Alors Susanne poussa un grand cri, et les vieillards crièrent aussi contre elle. | 24 Then Susanna shrieked, and the old men also shouted at her, |
| 25 Et l'un d'eux courut à la porte du jardin (verger) et l'ouvrit. | 25 as one of them ran to open the garden doors. |
| 26 Ayant entendu crier dans le jardin (verger), les serviteurs de la maison se précipitèrent par la porte de derrière, pour voir ce que c'était. | 26 When the people in the house heard the cries from the garden, they rushed in by the side gate to see what had happened to her. |
| 27 (Mais) Après que les vieillards eurent parlé, les serviteurs éprouvèrent une grande honte, parce qu'on n'avait jamais rien dit de semblable de Susanne. Le lendemain arriva, | 27 At the accusations by the old men, the servants felt very much ashamed, for never had any such thing been said about Susanna. |
| 28 et le peuple étant venu chez Joakim son mari, les deux vieillards y vinrent aussi, pleins d'une résolution criminelle (inique) contre Susanne, pour lui faire perdre la vie. | 28 When the people came to her husband Joakim the next day, the two wicked elders also came, fully determined to put Susanna to death. Before all the people they ordered: |
| 29 Et ils dirent devant le peuple : Envoyez chercher Susanne, fille d'Helcias, femme de Joakim. On y envoya aussitôt, | 29 "Send for Susanna, the daughter of Hilkiah, the wife of Joakim." When she was sent for, |
| 30 et elle vint avec ses parents, ses enfants et tous ses proches (parents). | 30 she came with her parents, children and all her relatives. |
| 31 Or Susanne était d'une délicatesse et d'une beauté parfaites (extrêmement gracieuse et belle de visage). | 31 Susanna, very delicate and beautiful, |
| 32 (Mais) Ces méchants ordonnèrent qu'on lui ôtât son voile (car elle était voilée), afin de se rassasier au moins en cette manière de sa beauté. | 32 was veiled; but those wicked men ordered her to uncover her face so as to sate themselves with her beauty. |
| 33 Les siens et tous ceux qui l'avaient connue pleuraient. | 33 All her relatives and the onlookers were weeping. |
| 34 Alors les deux vieillards, se levant au milieu du peuple, mirent leurs mains sur sa tête. | 34 In the midst of the people the two elders rose up and laid their hands on her head. |
| 35 Elle, en pleura(nt), leva les yeux au ciel, car son cœur avait confiance dans le Seigneur. | 35 Through her tears she looked up to heaven, for she trusted in the Lord wholeheartedly. |
| 36 Et les vieillards dirent : Comme nous nous promenions seuls dans le jardin (verger), cette femme est entrée avec deux (jeunes) servantes ; elle a fermé les portes du jardin (verger) et elle a renvoyé les jeunes filles. | 36 The elders made this accusation: "As we were walking in the garden alone, this woman entered with two girls and shut the doors of the garden, dismissing the girls. |
| 37 Et un jeune homme, qui était caché, est venu et a péché (commis le crime) avec elle. | 37 A young man, who was hidden there, came and lay with her. |
| 38 Nous étions dans un coin du jardin (verger), et, voyant cette iniquité, nous sommes accourus (avons couru) à eux, et nous les avons vus s'unir (ensemble). | 38 When we, in a corner of the garden, saw this crime, we ran toward them. |
| 39 Lui, nous n'avons pu le prendre, parce qu'il était plus fort que nous, et qu'ayant ouvert la porte, il s'est échappé (est sorti avec précipitation). | 39 We saw them lying together, but the man we could not hold, because he was stronger than we; he opened the doors and ran off. |
| 40 Mais elle, après l'avoir prise, nous lui avons demandé quel était ce jeune homme, et elle n'a pas voulu nous le dire. C'est de quoi nous sommes témoins. | 40 Then we seized this one and asked who the young man was, |
| 41 La multitude les crut, parce qu'ils étaient des anciens et des juges du peuple, et ils la condamnèrent à mort. | 41 but she refused to tell us. We testify to this." The assembly believed them, since they were elders and judges of the people, and they condemned her to death. |
| 42 Alors (Mais) Susanne poussa un grand cri et dit : Dieu éternel, qui pénétrez ce qui est caché, et qui connaissez toutes choses avant qu'elles arrivent, | 42 But Susanna cried aloud: "O eternal God, you know what is hidden and are aware of all things before they come to be: |
| 43 vous savez qu'ils ont porté un faux témoignage contre moi ; et voici que je meurs, sans avoir rien fait de tout ce qu'ils ont inventé malicieusement contre moi. | 43 you know that they have testified falsely against me. Here I am about to die, though I have done none of the things with which these wicked men have charged me." |
| 44 Et (Or) le Seigneur entendit sa voix. | 44 The Lord heard her prayer. |
| 45 Et comme on la conduisait à la mort, le Seigneur suscita l'esprit saint d'un jeune enfant nommé Daniel, | 45 As she was being led to execution, God stirred up the holy spirit of a young boy named Daniel, |
| 46 qui cria à haute voix : Je suis pur (innocent) du sang de cette femme. | 46 and he cried aloud: "I will have no part in the death of this woman." |
| 47 Tout le peuple se tourna vers lui et dit : Quelle est cette parole que tu as proférée ? | 47 All the people turned and asked him, "What is this you are saying?" |
| 48 (Lui,) Se tenant debout au milieu d'eux, il dit : Etes-vous assez insensés, fils d'Israël, pour condamner, sans la juger et sans connaître la vérité, une fille d'Israël ? | 48 He stood in their midst and continued, "Are you such fools, O Israelites! To condemn a woman of Israel without examination and without clear evidence? |
| 49 Jugez-la de nouveau, car ils ont porté un faux témoignage contre elle. | 49 Return to court, for they have testified falsely against her." |
| 50 Le peuple revint donc en grande hâte, et les vieillards dirent à Daniel : Viens, et prends place au milieu de nous, et instruis-nous, puisque Dieu t'a donné l'honneur de la vieillesse. | 50 Then all the people returned in haste. To Daniel the elders said, "Come, sit with us and inform us, since God has given you the prestige of old age." |
| 51 (Et) Daniel dit au peuple : Séparez-les l'un de l'autre, et je les jugerai. | 51 But he replied, "Separate these two far from one another that I may examine them." |
| 52 Lorsqu'ils eurent été séparés l'un de l'autre, Daniel appela l'un d'eux et lui dit : Homme vieilli dans le mal, les péchés que tu as commis autrefois viennent maintenant sur toi, | 52 After they were separated one from the other, he called one of them and said: "How you have grown evil with age! Now have your past sins come to term: |
| 53 qui rendais des jugements injustes, qui opprimais les innocents et qui relâchais les coupables, quoique le Seigneur ait dit : Tu ne feras pas mourir (un) l'innocent et le (un) juste. | 53 passing unjust sentences, condemning the innocent, and freeing the guilty, although the Lord says, "The innocent and the just you shall not put to death.' |
| 54 Maintenant donc, si tu (vous) l'as(vez) vue, di(te)s sous quel arbre tu (vous) les as(vez) vus parler ensemble. Il dit : Sous un lentisque. | 54 Now, then, if you were a witness, tell me under what tree you saw them together." |
| 55 Daniel lui dit : Vraiment tu as (vous avez) menti contre ta (votre) tête ; car voici que (qu'un) l'ange de Dieu, ayant reçu son arrêt, te (vous) coupera en deux. | 55 "Under a mastic tree," he answered. "Your fine lie has cost you your head," said Daniel; "for the angel of God shall receive the sentence from him and split you in two." |
| 56 Après l'avoir renvoyé, il ordonna qu'on fît venir l'autre, et il lui dit : Race de Chanaan, et non de Juda, la beauté (vous) t'a séduit, et la passion a perverti ton (votre) cœur. | 56 Putting him to one side, he ordered the other one to be brought. "Offspring of Canaan, not of Judah," Daniel said to him, "beauty has seduced you, lust has subverted your conscience. |
| 57 C'est ainsi que vous traitiez les filles d'Israël, et, effrayées, elles vous parlaient ; mais une (la) fille de Juda n'a pu souffrir votre iniquité. | 57 This is how you acted with the daughters of Israel, and in their fear they yielded to you; but a daughter of Judah did not tolerate your wickedness. |
| 58 Maintenant donc, di(te)s-moi sous quel arbre tu (vous) les as(vez) surpris lorsqu'ils se parlaient. Il dit : Sous un chêne (une yeuse). | 58 Now, then, tell me under what tree you surprised them together." |
| 59 Daniel lui dit : Vraiment, toi (vous) aussi tu (vous) as(vez) menti contre ta (votre) tête ; car l'ange du Seigneur est (tout) prêt, et tient l'épée pour te (vous) couper par le milieu et pour te (vous) faire mourir (tous deux). | 59 "Under an oak," he said. "Your fine lie has cost you also your head," said Daniel; "for the angel of God waits with a sword to cut you in two so as to make an end of you both." |
| 60 Alors toute l'assemblée poussa un grand cri, et ils bénirent Dieu, qui sauve ceux qui espèrent en lui. | 60 The whole assembly cried aloud, blessing God who saves those that hope in him. |
| 61 Et ils s'élevèrent contre les deux vieillards, que Daniel avait convaincus par leur propre bouche d'avoir porté un faux témoignage ; et ils leur firent le mal qu'ils avaient fait à leur prochain, | 61 They rose up against the two elders, for by their own words Daniel had convicted them of perjury. According to the law of Moses, they inflicted on them the penalty they had plotted to impose on their neighbor: |
| 62 pour exécuter la loi de Moïse. Ils les firent mourir, et le (un) sang innocent fut sauvé en ce jour-là. | 62 they put them to death. Thus was innocent blood spared that day. |
| 63 Helcias et sa femme louèrent Dieu au sujet de leur fille Susanne, avec Joakim son mari et tous ses proches (parents), de ce que rien de honteux ne s'était trouvé en elle. | 63 Hilkiah and his wife praised God for their daughter Susanna, as did Joakim her husband and all her relatives, because she was found innocent of any shameful deed. |
| 64 Quant à Daniel, il devint grand devant le peuple, depuis ce jour-là et dans la suite. | 64 And from that day onward Daniel was greatly esteemed by the people. |
| 65 Et le roi Astyages ayant été réuni à ses pères, Cyrus le Perse lui succéda dans le royaume. | |
