| 1 La quatrième année de Joakim, fils de Josias, roi de Juda, la parole du Seigneur fut adressée à Jérémie, en ces termes : | 1 In the fourth year of Jehoiakim, son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from the LORD: |
| 2 Prends un (rouleau de, note) livre, et tu y écriras toutes les paroles que je t'ai dites contre Israël et Juda, et contre tous les peuples, depuis le jour où je t'ai parlé, au temps de Josias, jusqu'à ce jour ; | 2 Take a scroll and write on it all the words I have spoken to you against Israel, Judah, and all the nations, from the day I first spoke to you, in the days of Josiah, until today. |
| 3 peut-être, quand la maison de Juda entendra tous les maux que je pense lui faire, reviendront-ils chacun de ses voies criminelles (très mauvaises), et je pardonnerai leur (son) iniquité et leurs (ses) péchés. | 3 Perhaps, when the house of Judah hears all the evil I have in mind to do to them, they will turn back each from his evil way, so that I may forgive their wickedness and their sin. |
| 4 Jérémie appela donc Baruch, fils de Nérias, et Baruch écrivit dans un livre, sous la dictée de Jérémie, toutes les paroles que le Seigneur lui avait dites. | 4 So Jeremiah called Baruch, son of Neriah, who wrote down on a scroll, as Jeremiah dictated, all the words which the LORD had spoken to him. |
| 5 Jérémie donna ensuite cet ordre à Baruch : Je suis enfermé, et je ne puis pas entrer dans la maison du Seigneur. | 5 Then Jeremiah charged Baruch: I cannot go to the house of the LORD; I am prevented from doing so. |
| 6 Entres-y donc, toi, et lis, dans le livre (rouleau) où tu as écrit sous ma dictée, les paroles du Seigneur aux oreilles du peuple, dans la maison du Seigneur, au jour du (de) jeûne ; tu les liras aussi aux oreilles de tous les habitants de Juda, qui viennent de leurs villes ; | 6 Do you go on the fast day and read publicly in the LORD'S house the LORD'S words from the scroll you wrote at my dictation; read them also to all the men of Judah who come up from their cities. |
| 7 peut-être leur prière tombera-t-elle devant le Seigneur, et reviendront-ils chacun de sa voie (très) mauvaise, car grande est la fureur, l'indignation dont le Seigneur a menacé ce peuple. | 7 Perhaps they will lay their supplication before the LORD and will all turn back from their evil way; for great is the fury of anger with which the LORD has threatened this people. |
| 8 Baruch, fils de Nérias, fit tout ce que le prophète Jérémie lui avait ordonné, et il lut dans le livre (rouleau) les paroles du Seigneur, dans la maison du Seigneur. | 8 Baruch, son of Neriah, did everything the prophet Jeremiah commanded; from the book-scroll he read the LORD'S words in the LORD'S house. |
| 9 (Or) La cinquième année de Joakim, fils de Josias, roi de Juda, au neuvième mois, on publia un jeûne devant le Seigneur à tout le peuple qui était à Jérusalem, et à toute la multitude qui avait afflué des villes de Juda à Jérusalem. | 9 In the ninth month, in the fifth year of Jehoiakim, son of Josiah, king of Judah, a fast to placate the LORD was proclaimed for all the people of Jerusalem and all who came from Judah's cities to Jerusalem. |
| 10 Et Baruch lut dans le livre (rouleau) les paroles de Jérémie dans la maison du Seigneur, dans la chambre (du trésor) de Gamarias, fils de Saphan, le secrétaire (scribe), dans le vestibule supérieur, à l'entrée de la porte neuve de la maison du Seigneur, aux oreilles de tout le peuple. | 10 It was in the room of Gemariah, son of the scribe Shaphan, in the upper court of the LORD'S house, at the entrance of the New Temple-Gate, that Baruch publicly read the words of Jeremiah from his book. |
| 11 Et lorsque Michée, fils de Gamarias, fils de Saphan, eut entendu toutes les paroles du Seigneur écrites dans le livre, | 11 Now Micaiah, son of Gemariah, son of Shaphan, heard all the words of the LORD read from the book. |
| 12 il descendit à la maison du roi, dans la chambre du secrétaire (trésor du scribe), où tous les princes étaient assis : Elisama le secrétaire (Scribe) ; Dalaïas, fils de Séméïas ; Elnathan, fils d'Achobor ; Gamarias, fils de Saphan ; Sédécias, fils d'Hananias, et tous les princes ; | 12 So he went down to the king's palace, into the scribe's chamber, where the princes were just then in session: Elishama, the scribe, Delaiah, son of Shemaiah, Elnathan, son of Achbor, Gemariah, son of Shaphan, Zedekiah, son of Hananiah, and the other princes. |
| 13 et Michée leur rapporta toutes les paroles qu'il avait entendues lorsque Baruch lisait dans le livre (rouleau) aux oreilles du peuple. | 13 To them Micaiah reported all that he had heard Baruch read publicly from his book. |
| 14 Tous les princes envoyèrent donc vers Baruch Judi, fils de Nathanias, fils de Sélémias, fils de Chusi, pour lui dire : Prends dans ta main le livre (rouleau) dans lequel tu as lu aux oreilles du peuple, et viens. Baruch, fils de Nérias, prit donc le livre (rouleau) dans sa main, et il vint auprès d'eux. | 14 Thereupon the princes sent Jehudi, son of Nethaniah, son of Shelemiah, son of Cushi, to Baruch with the order: "Come, and bring with you the scroll you read publicly to the people." Scroll in hand, Baruch, son of Neriah, went to them. |
| 15 Et ils lui dirent : Assieds-toi, et lis ces choses à nos oreilles. Et Baruch lut à leurs oreilles. | 15 "Sit down," they said to him, "and read it to us." Baruch read it to them, |
| 16 Lors donc qu'ils eurent entendu toutes ces paroles, ils s'entre-regardèrent tous avec stupéfaction (étonnement), et ils dirent à Baruch : Il faut que nous rapportions au roi toutes ces paroles. | 16 and when they heard all its words, they were frightened and said to one another, "We must certainly tell the king all these things." |
| 17 Et ils l'interrogèrent, en disant : Indique-nous comment tu as écrit toutes ces paroles sous sa dictée. | 17 Then they asked Baruch: "Tell us, please, how you came to write down all these words." |
| 18 Baruch leur répondit : Il dictait de sa bouche toutes ces paroles comme s'il me les eût lues, et moi je les écrivais dans ce livre (le rouleau) avec de l'encre. | 18 "Jeremiah dictated all these words to me," Baruch answered them, "and I wrote them down with ink in the book." |
| 19 Les princes dirent à Baruch : Va, et cache-toi, ainsi que Jérémie, et que personne ne sache où vous serez. | 19 At this the princes said to Baruch, "Go into hiding, you and Jeremiah; let no one know where you are." |
| 20 Ils allèrent ensuite auprès du roi, dans la cour (vestibule), laissant le livre (rouleau) en dépôt dans la chambre (du trésor) d'Elisama, le secrétaire (scribe), et ils rapportèrent toutes les paroles aux oreilles du roi. | 20 Leaving the scroll in safekeeping in the room of Elishama the scribe, they entered the room where the king was. | 21 Alors le roi envoya Judi pour prendre le livre (rouleau) ; Judi l'ayant pris dans la chambre (du trésor) d'Elisama, le secrétaire (scribe), le lut aux oreilles du roi et de tous les princes qui se tenaient autour du roi. | 21 he sent Jehudi to fetch the scroll. Jehudi brought it from the room of Elishama the scribe, and read it to the king and to all the princes who were in attendance on the king. |
| 22 Or le roi était assis dans la maison d'hiver, au neuvième mois, et un brasier plein de charbons ardents était placé devant lui. | 22 Now the king was sitting in his winter house, since it was the ninth month, and fire was burning in a brazier before him. |
| 23 Lorsque Judi eut lu trois ou quatre pages le roi coupa le livre (rouleau) avec le canif du secrétaire (scribe), et le jeta dans le feu du brasier, jusqu'à ce que tout le volume fût consumé dans le feu du brasier. | 23 Each time Jehudi finished reading three or four columns, the king would cut off the piece with a scribe's knife and cast it into the fire in the brazier, until the entire roll was consumed in the fire. |
| 24 Le roi et tous ses serviteurs, qui entendirent toutes ces paroles ne furent pas effrayés et ne déchirèrent pas leurs vêtements. | 24 Hearing all these words did not frighten the king and his ministers or cause them to rend their garments. |
| 25 Cependant Elnathan, Dalaïas et Gamarias avaient prié le roi de ne pas brûler le livre ; mais il ne les écouta pas. | 25 And though Elnathan, Delaiah, and Gemariah urged the king not to burn the scroll, he would not listen to them, |
| 26 Et le roi ordonna à Jérémie, fils d'Amélech, à Saraïas, fils d'Ezriel, et à Sélémias, fils d'Abdéel, d'arrêter Baruch, le secrétaire (scribe), et le prophète Jérémie ; mais le Seigneur les cacha. | 26 but commanded Jerahmeel, a royal prince, and Seraiah, son of Azriel, and Shelemiah, son of Abdeel, to arrest Baruch, the secretary, and the prophet Jeremiah. But the LORD kept them concealed. |
| 27 Et la parole du Seigneur fut adressée au prophète Jérémie, après que le roi eut brûlé le livre (rouleau) où étaient les paroles que Baruch avait écrites sous la dictée de Jérémie, et il lui dit : | 27 This word of the LORD came to Jeremiah, after the king burned the scroll with the text Jeremiah had dictated to Baruch: |
| 28 Prends un autre livre (rouleau), et écris-y toutes les paroles qui étaient dans le premier livre (rouleau), qu'a brûlé Joakim, roi de Juda. | 28 Take another scroll, and write on it everything that the first scroll contained, which Jehoiakim, king of Judah, burned up. |
| 29 Et tu diras à Joakim, roi de Juda : Ainsi parle le Seigneur : Tu as brûlé ce livre (rouleau), en disant : Pourquoi y as-tu écrit et annoncé que le roi de Babylone viendra en toute hâte (soudain) pour ravager ce pays, et pour en faire disparaître les hommes et les bêtes ? | 29 And against Jehoiakim, king of Judah, say this: Thus says the LORD: You burned that scroll, saying, "Why did you write on it: Babylon's king shall surely come and lay waste this land and empty it of man and beast?" |
| 30 C'est pourquoi ainsi parle le Seigneur contre Joakim, roi de Juda : Aucun prince issu de lui ne sera assis sur le trône de David, et son cadavre sera jeté à la chaleur pendant le (du) jour, et à la gelée pendant (de) la nuit. | 30 The LORD now says of Jehoiakim, king of Judah: No descendant of his shall succeed to David's throne; his corpse shall be cast out, exposed to the heat of day, to the cold of night. |
| 31 Je visiterai en lui, et dans sa race, et dans ses serviteurs, leurs iniquités, et je ferai venir sur eux, sur les habitants de Jérusalem et sur les hommes de Juda, tous les maux que je leur ai prédits (annoncés), sans qu'ils m'aient écouté. | 31 I will punish him and his descendants and his ministers for their wickedness; against them and the citizens of Jerusalem and the men of Judah I will fulfill all the threats of evil which went unheeded. |
| 32 Jérémie prit donc un autre livre (rouleau) et le donna à Baruch, fils de Nérias, le secrétaire | 32 Jeremiah took another scroll, and gave it to his secretary, Baruch, son of Neriah; he wrote on it at Jeremiah's dictation all the words contained in the book which Jehoiakim, king of Judah, had burned in the fire, and many others of the same kind in addition. |
