| 1 La quatorzième année du règne d'Ezéchias, Sennachérib, roi des Assyriens, vint assiéger toutes les villes fortes de Juda, et il les prit. | 1 And it came to pass in the fourteenth year of king Ezechias, that Sennacherib king of the Assyrians came up against all the fenced cities of Juda, and took them. |
| 2 Et le roi des Assyriens envoya Rabsacès de Lachis à Jérusalem vers le roi Ezéchias, avec une forte escorte (armée considérable), et il s'arrêta près de l'aqueduc de la piscine supérieure, sur le chemin du Champ du foulon. | 2 And the king of the Assyrians sent Rabsaces from Lachis to Jerusalem, to king Ezechias with a great army, and he stood by the conduit of the upper pool in the way of the fuller's held. |
| 3 Eliacim, fils d'Helcias, qui était grand maître (intendant) de la maison (du roi), Sobna, secrétaire (le scribe), et Joahé, fils d'Asaph, chancelier (qui tenait les registres), sortirent auprès de lui. | 3 And there went out to him Eliacim the son of Helcias, who was over the house, and Sobna the scribe, and Joahe the son of Asaph the recorder. |
| 4 Et Rabsacès leur dit : Dites à Ezéchias : Voici ce que dit le grand roi, le roi des Assyriens : Quelle est cette confiance dont tu te flattes (vous êtes animés) ? | 4 And Rabsaces said to them: Tell Ezechias: Thus saith the great king, the king of the Assyrians: What is this confidence wherein thou trustest? |
| 5 Par quel dessein (conseil) et avec quelle force prétends-tu (prétendez-vous) te (vous) révolter ? sur qui t'appuies-tu (vous appuyez-vous), pour refuser de m'obéir (que vous vous soyez retirés de moi) ? | 5 Or with what counsel or strength dost thou prepare for war? on whom dost thou trust, that thou art revolted from me? |
| 6 Tu t'appuies (Vous vous appuyez) sur l'Egypte, ce roseau brisé, (bâton) qui entrera dans la main de celui qui s'appuiera dessus, et qui la transpercera : c'est ce que sera (le) Pharaon, roi d'Egypte, pour tous ceux qui espèrent en lui. | 6 Lo thou trustest upon this broken staff of a reed, upon Egypt: upon which if a man lean, it will go into his hand, and pierce it: so is Pharao king or Egypt to all that trust in him. |
| 7 Que si tu (vous) me réponds (répondez) : Nous avons confiance dans le Seigneur notre Dieu, n'est-ce pas lui dont Ezéchias a détruit les hauts lieux et les autels, en disant à Juda et à Jérusalem : Vous adorerez devant cet autel ? | 7 But if thou wilt answer me: We trust in the Lord our God: is it not he whose high places and altars Ezechias hath taken away, and hath said to Juda and Jerusalem: You shall worship before this altar? |
| 8 Rends-toi (Rendez-vous) donc maintenant à mon maître, le roi des Assyriens, et je te (vous) donnerai deux mille chevaux, et tu (vous) ne pourras (pourrez) trouver assez d'hommes pour les monter. | 8 And now deliver thyself up to my lord the king of the Assyrians, and I will give thee two thousand horses, and thou wilt not be able on thy part to find riders for them. |
| 9 Et comment soutiendras-tu (soutiendrez-vous) l'aspect d'un seul gouverneur pris parmi les moindres serviteurs (officiers) de mon maître ? Que si tu as (vous avez) confiance dans l'Egypte, dans ses chars et dans ses cavaliers, | 9 And how wilt thou stand against the face of the judge of one place, of the least of my master's servants? But if thou trust in Egypt, in chariots and in horsemen: |
| 10 est-ce que je suis monté sans le Seigneur dans cette terre pour la perdre (entièrement) ? C'est le Seigneur qui m'a dit : Monte contre cette terre, et détruis-là (entièrement). | 10 And am I now come up without the Lord against this land to destroy it? The Lord said to me: Go up against this land, and destroy it. |
| 11 Alors Eliacim, Sobna et Joahé dirent à Rabsacès : Parle(z) à tes (vos) serviteurs en langue syriaque, car nous la comprenons ; mais ne nous parle(z) pas en hébreu (langue juive) aux oreilles du peuple qui est sur la muraille. | 11 And Eliacim, and Sobna, and Joahe said to Rabsaces: Speak to thy servants in the Syrian tongue: for we understand it: speak not to us in the Jews' language in the hearing of the people, that are upon the wall. |
| 12 Et Rabsacès leur dit : Est-ce à ton maître et à toi que mon maître m'a envoyé dire ces paroles ? et n'est-ce pas plutôt à ces hommes assis sur la muraille, pour manger leurs excréments et pour boire leur urine avec vous ? | 12 And Rabsaces said to them: Hath my master sent me to thy master and to thee, to speak all these words; and not rather to the men that sit on the wall; that they may eat their own dung, and drink their urine with you? |
| 13 Rabsacès se tenant donc debout, et criant de toute sa force, dit en langue judaïque (hébreu) : Ecoutez les paroles du grand roi, du roi des Assyriens. | 13 Then Rabsaces stood, and cried out with a loud voice in the Jews' language, and said: Hear the words of the great king, the king of the Assyrians. |
| 14 Voici ce que dit le roi : Qu'Ezéchias ne vous séduise pas, car il ne pourra pas vous délivrer (de ma main). | 14 Thus saith the king: Let not Ezechias deceive you, for he shall not be able to deliver you. |
| 15 Et qu'Ezéchias ne vous fasse pas mettre votre confiance dans le Seigneur, en disant : Le Seigneur nous délivrera certainement ; cette ville ne sera pas livrée entre les mains du roi des Assyriens. | 15 And let not Ezechias make you trust in the Lord, saying: The Lord will surely deliver us, and this city shall not be given into the hands of the king of the Assyrians. |
| 16 N'écoutez pas Ezéchias ; car voici ce que dit le roi des Assyriens : Faites alliance avec moi, et venez vous rendre à moi, et chacun mangera du fruit de sa vigne et du fruit de son figuier, et boira l'eau de la citerne, | 16 Do not hearken to Ezechias: for thus said the king of the Assyrians: Do with me that which is for your advantage, and come out to me, and eat ye every one of his vine, and every one of his dg tree, and drink ye every one the water of his cistern, |
| 17 jusqu'à ce que je vienne, et que je vous emmène dans une terre semblable à la vôtre, une terre de blé et de vin, une terre abondante en pains et en vignes. | 17 Till I come and take you away to a land, like to your own, a land of corn and of wine, a land of bread and vineyards. |
| 18 Qu'Ezéchias ne vous trouble pas, en disant : Le Seigneur nous délivrera. Est-ce que les dieux des nations ont délivré chacun sa terre de la puissance (main) du roi des Assyriens ? | 18 Neither let Ezechias trouble you, saying: The Lord will deliver us. Have any of the gods of the nations delivered their land out of the hand of the king of the Assyrians? |
| 19 Où est le dieu d'Emath et d'Arphad ? où est le dieu de Sepharvaïm ? Ont-ils délivré Samarie de ma main (puissante) ? | 19 Where is the god of Emath and of Arphad? where is the god of Sepharvaim? have they delivered Samaria out of my hand? |
| 20 Quel est, entre tous les dieux de ces pays, celui qui ait pu délivrer son pays de ma main, pour que le Seigneur puisse sauver Jérusalem de ma main ? | 20 Who is there among all the gods of these lands, that hath delivered his country out of my hand, that the Lord may deliver Jerusalem out of my hand? |
| 21 Ils se turent, et ils ne lui répondirent pas un mot. Car le roi leur avait donné cet ordre : Ne lui répondez pas. | 21 And they held their peace, and answered him not a word. For the king had commanded, saying: answer him not. |
| 22 Eliacim, fils d'Helcias, grand maître (intendant) de la maison (du roi), Sobna secrétaire (le scribe), et Joahé, fils d'Asaph, chancelier (qui tenait les registres), vinrent auprès d'Ezéchias, ayant les vêtements déchirés, et ils lui rapportèrent les paroles de Rabsacès. | 22 And Eliacim the son of Helcias, that was over the house, and Sobna the scribe, and Joahe the son of Asaph the recorder, went in to Ezechias with their garments rent, and told him the words of Rabsaces. |
