They had conquered kings both far and near, and all who heard of their fame were afraid of them. |

| 17 Judas choisit Eupolémus, fils de Jean, fils de Jacob, et Jason, fils d'Eléazar ; et il les envoya à Rome pour contracter amitié et alliance avec eux, | 17 So Judas chose Eupolemus, son of John, son of Accos, and Jason, son of Eleazar, and sent them to Rome to establish an alliance of friendship with them. |
| 18 et pour qu'ils les délivrassent du joug des Grecs, car ils (les Juifs) voyaient qu'ils réduisaient en servitude le royaume d'Israël. | 18 He did this to get rid of the yoke, for it was obvious that the kingdom of the Greeks was subjecting Israel to slavery. |
| 19 Ils partirent pour Rome, par un très long chemin ; et ils entrèrent au Sénat, et dirent : | 19 After making a very long journey to Rome, the envoys entered the senate and spoke as follows: |
| 20 Judas Machabée, et ses frères, et le peuple des Juifs, nous ont envoyés vers vous pour faire avec vous alliance et paix, et pour que vous nous inscriviez parmi vos alliés et vos amis. | 20 "Judas, called Maccabeus, and his brothers, with the Jewish people, have sent us to you to make a peaceful alliance with you, and to enroll ourselves among your allies and friends." |

| 22 Et voici le rescrit qu'ils gravèrent sur des tables d'airain, et qu'ils envoyèrent à Jérusalem, pour qu'il demeurât chez eux comme un monument de paix et d'alliance : | 22 and this is a copy of the reply they inscribed on bronze tablets and sent to Jerusalem, to remain there with the Jews as a record of peace and alliance: |
| 23 Que les Romains et la nation des Juifs soient comblés de biens à jamais sur mer et sur terre, et que l'épée et l'ennemi s'éloignent d'eux ! | 23 "May it be well with the Romans and the Jewish nation at sea and on land forever; may sword and enemy be far from them. |

| 26 et ils (les Romains) ne donneront et ne fourniront aux combattants ni blé, ni armes, ni argent, ni vaisseaux, ainsi qu'il a plu aux Romains ; et ils observeront leurs ordres, sans rien recevoir d'eux. | 26 and to those who wage war they shall not give nor provide grain, arms, money, or ships; this is Rome's decision. They shall fulfill their obligations without receiving any recompense. |
| 27 Et de même, s'il survient d'abord une guerre au peuple juif, les Romains les aideront de tout cœur, selon que le temps le leur permettra ; | 27 In the same way, if war is made first on the Jewish nation, the Romans will help them willingly, as the occasion shall demand, |
| 28 et les Juifs ne fourniront aux troupes auxiliaires ni blé, ni armes, ni argent, ni vaisseaux, car c'est ainsi qu'il a plu aux Romains ; et ils observeront leurs ordres sincèrement. | 28 and to those who are attacking them there shall not be given grain, arms, money, or ships; this is Rome's decision. They shall fulfill their obligations without deception. |
| 29 C'est là l'accord que les Romains font avec les Juifs. | 29 On these terms the Romans have made an agreement with the Jewish people. |
| 30 Que si par la suite les uns ou les autres veulent enlever ou ajouter quelque chose à ces détails, ils le feront de concert ; et tout ce qu'ils ajouteront ou enlèveront, sera ratifié. | 30 But if both parties hereafter decide to add or take away anything, they shall do as they choose, and whatever they shall add or take away shall be valid. |
| 31 Et quant aux maux que le roi Démétrius a faits aux Juifs, nous lui avons écrit en ces termes : Pourquoi as-tu (avez-vous) fait peser ton (votre) joug sur nos amis et nos alliés, les Juifs ? | 31 "Moreover, concerning the wrongs that King Demetrius has done to them, we have written to him thus: 'Why have you made your yoke heavy upon our friends and allies the Jews? |
| 32 Si donc ils s'adressent à nous de nouveau, nous leur ferons justice contre toi (vous), et nous combattrons contre toi (vous) sur mer et sur terre. | 32 If they complain about you again, we will do them justice and make war on you by land and sea.'" |
