| 1 La reine de Saba, ayant appris la grande renommée de Salomon, vint à Jérusalem pour l'éprouver par des énigmes. Elle avait avec elle de grandes richesses et des chameaux qui portaient des aromates, et beaucoup d'or, et des pierres précieuses. Elle vint trouver Salomon, et lui exposa tout ce qu'elle avait dans le cœur. | 1 Also, when the queen of Sheba had heard of the fame of Solomon, she came to Jerusalem, with great riches and with camels which were carrying aromatics, and very much gold, and precious gems, so that she might test him with enigmas. And when she had approached Solomon, she spoke to him all that was in her heart. |
| 2 Et Salomon lui expliqua tout ce qu'elle lui avait proposé ; et il n'y eut rien qu'il ne lui éclaircît (entièrement). | 2 And Solomon explained for her all that she had proposed. And there was nothing that he did not make clear to her. |
| 3 Après qu'elle eut vu la sagesse de Salomon, et la maison qu'il avait bâtie, | 3 And after she saw these things, specifically, the wisdom of Solomon, and the house which he had built, |
| 4 les mets de sa table, les appartements de ses serviteurs, les diverses classes (emplois) de ceux qui le servaient et leurs vêtements, ses échansons (, leurs habits), les victimes qu'il immolait dans la maison du Seigneur, elle en fut tellement étonnée, qu'elle était toute hors d'elle-même (son esprit n'était plus en elle, à cause de son étonnement, note). | 4 indeed also the foods of his table, and the habitations of the servants, and the duties of his ministers, and their apparel, and also his cupbearers and their garments, and the victims which he was immolating in the house of the Lord, there was no longer any spirit in her, due to astonishment. |
| 5 Et elle dit au roi : Ce qu'on m'avait dit dans mon royaume de votre mérite et de votre sagesse est bien vrai. | 5 And she said to the king: “The word is true, which I had heard in my own land, about your virtues and wisdom. |
| 6 Je ne croyais pas ce qu'on m'en rapportait, avant d'être venue moi-même, et d'avoir vu de mes propres yeux, et d'avoir reconnu qu'on ne m'avait pas raconté la moitié de votre sagesse. Vos vertus dépassent la (votre) renommée. | 6 I did not believe those who described it, until I had arrived and my eyes had seen, and I had proven that not even half of your wisdom had been described to me. You have exceeded your fame with your virtue. |
| 7 Heureux vos gens, et heureux vos serviteurs qui sont sans cesse devant vous, et qui écoutent votre sagesse ! | 7 Blessed are your men, and blessed are your servants, who stand before you at all times and listen to your wisdom. |
| 8 Béni soit le Seigneur votre Dieu, qui a voulu vous faire asseoir sur son trône, comme roi pour le Seigneur votre Dieu. C'est parce que Dieu aime Israël et qu'il veut le conserver à jamais, qu'il vous a établi roi sur lui pour que vous fassiez droit et justice. | 8 Blessed is the Lord your God, who willed to set you upon his throne as a king for the Lord your God. Since God loves Israel, he wishes to preserve them unto eternity. For this reason, he appointed you as king over them, so that you may accomplish judgment and justice.” |
| 9 Ensuite la reine de Saba présenta au roi cent vingt talents d'or, et une énorme quantité de parfums, et des pierres (très) précieuses. Il n'y eut plus de parfums si excellents que ceux dont la reine de Saba fit présent à Salomon. | 9 Then she gave to the king one hundred twenty talents of gold, and an exceedingly great abundance of aromatics, and very precious gems. Never were there such aromatics as those that the queen of Sheba gave to king Solomon. |
| 10 Les serviteurs d'Hiram, avec les serviteurs de Salomon, apportèrent aussi de l'or d'Ophir, et du bois très rare (odorants), et des pierres très précieuses. | 10 Then too, the servants of Hiram, with the servants of Solomon, brought gold from Ophir, and wood from thyine trees, and very precious gems. |
| 11 Et le roi fit faire de ce bois les degrés de la maison du Seigneur, et ceux de la maison du roi, et des harpes et des lyres (psaltérions) pour les musiciens. On n'avait jamais vu jusqu'alors de ces sortes de bois dans le pays de Juda. | 11 And the king made, from this particular thyine wood, steps in the house of the Lord, and in the house of the king, and also harps and psalteries for the singing men. Never was there seen such wood in the land of Judah. |
| 12 (Or) Le roi Salomon, de son côté, donna à la reine de Saba tout ce qu'elle put désirer, et ce qu'elle demanda, et beaucoup plus qu'elle ne lui avait apporté. Et elle s'en retourna dans son royaume avec sa suite. | 12 Then king Solomon gave to the queen of Sheba all that she desired, and all that she requested, and much more than what she had brought to him. And returning, she went away to her own land with her servants. |
| 13 Le poids de l'or qu'on apportait tous les ans à Salomon était de six cent soixante-six talents d'or ; | 13 Now the weight of the gold, which was being brought to Solomon throughout each year, was six hundred sixty-six talents of gold, |
| 14 sans compter ce qu'avaient coutume de lui apporter les députés de diverses nations, les marchands, tous les rois de l'Arabie et tous les gouverneurs des provinces, qui apportaient (tous) de l'or et de l'argent à Salomon. | 14 apart from the sum that the legates of various nations and the merchants were accustomed to bring, and apart from the gold and silver that all the kings of Arabia, and the princes of the lands, were bringing together for Solomon. |
| 15 Le roi Salomon fit donc faire deux cents piques (lances) d'or du poids de six cents sicles, qui étaient employés pour chacune. | 15 And so, king Solomon made two hundred gold spears, from six hundred gold pieces, the amount used for each spear, |
| 16 Il fit faire aussi trois cents boucliers d'or, chacun de trois cents sicles d'or, que l'on employait à les couvrir. Et le roi les mit dans son arsenal, qui était planté d'arbres (d'un bois). | 16 and also three hundred gold shields, from three hundred gold pieces, which covered each shield. And the king placed them in the armory, which was situated in a forest. |
| 17 Le roi fit de plus un grand trône d'ivoire, qu'il revêtit d'un or très pur. | 17 Also, the king made a great ivory throne, and he clothed it with the purest gold. |
| 18 Les six degrés par lesquels on montait au trône et le marchepied étaient d'or, avec deux bras de chaque côté, et deux lions près de ces (deux petits) bras | 18 And there were six steps, by which he would ascend to the throne, and a footstool of gold, and two arms, one on each side, and two lions standing beside the arms. |
| 19 et douze autres petits lions posés sur les degrés de côté et d'autre. Il n'y a jamais eu de trône semblable dans tous les royaumes du monde. | 19 Moreover, there were twelve additional little lions standing upon the six steps on both sides. There was no similar throne in all the kingdoms. |
| 20 Tous les vases de la table du roi étaient d'or, et toute la vaisselle de la maison du bois du Liban était aussi d'un or très pur. Car l'argent était alors regardé comme rien ; | 20 Also, all the vessels for the feasts of the king were of gold, and the vessels of the forest house of Lebanon were from the purest gold. For silver in those days was considered as nothing. |
| 21 parce que la flotte du roi allait tous les trois ans à Tharsis, avec les serviteurs d'Hiram ; et elle en apportait de l'or, de l'argent, de l'ivoire, des singes et des paons. | 21 For indeed, the ships of the king went to Tarshish, with the servants of Hiram, once every three years. And they brought from there gold, and silver, and ivory, and primates, and peacocks. |
| 22 Ainsi le roi Salomon surpassa tous les rois du monde en richesses et en gloire. | 22 And so, Solomon was magnified above all the kings of the earth in wealth and glory. |
| 23 Et tous les rois de la terre désiraient voir le visage de Salomon, et entendre la sagesse que Dieu avait répandue dans son cœur ; | 23 And all the kings of the lands were desiring to see the face of Solomon, so that they might hear the wisdom that God had granted to his heart. |
| 24 et ils lui apportaient tous les ans des vases d'or et d'argent, des étoffes précieuses (vêtements), des armes, des parfums, des chevaux et des mulets. | 24 And they were bringing to him gifts, vessels of silver and of gold, and garments, and armor, and aromatics, and horses, and mules, throughout each year. |
| 25 Salomon eut aussi quarante mille chevaux dans ses écuries et douze mille chars et cavaliers ; et il les distribua dans les villes des chars (quadriges), et à Jérusalem auprès de lui. | 25 Also, Solomon had forty thousand horses in the stables, and twelve thousand chariots and horsemen, and he appointed them to the cities of the chariots, and where the king was in Jerusalem. |
| 26 Et sa puissance s'étendit sur tous les rois qui étaient depuis l'Euphrate jusqu'au pays des Philistins et jusqu'aux frontières d'Egypte. | 26 Now he also exercised authority over all the kings from the river Euphrates as far as the land of the Philistines, and as far as the borders of Egypt. |
| 27 Et il fit que l'argent devint aussi commun à Jérusalem que les pierres, et qu'on y vit autant de cèdres qu'il y a de sycomores qui naissent dans la campagne (les plaines). | 27 And he brought forth so much silver that it was as plentiful in Jerusalem as stones. And cedar trees were as great in number as the sycamores that spring up in the plains. |
| 28 On lui amenait des chevaux d'Egypte et de tous les autres pays. | 28 And horses were brought to him from Egypt and from every region. |
| 29 Quant aux autres actions de Salomon, tant les premières que les dernières, elles sont écrites dans les livres du prophète Nathan, dans ceux du prophète Ahias le Silonite, et dans les prédictions du prophète Addo (le Voyant) contre Jéroboam, fils de Nabath. | 29 Now the rest of the works of Solomon, the first and the last, have been written in the words of Nathan, the prophet, and in the books of Ahijah, the Shilonite, as well as in the vision of Iddo, the seer, against Jeroboam, the son of Nabat. |
| 30 Et Salomon régna quarante ans à Jérusalem, sur tout Israël. | 30 And Solomon reigned in Jerusalem, over all of Israel, for forty years. |
| 31 Et il s'endormit avec ses pères, et fut enseveli dans la ville (cité) de David ; et Roboam, son fils, régna à sa place. | 31 And he slept with his fathers. And they buried him in the City of David. And his son, Rehoboam, reigned in his place. |
