| 1 Mais l'Esprit dit expressément que, dans les temps qui viendront, quelques-uns abandonneront la foi, s'attachant à des esprits d'erreur et à des doctrines de démons, | 1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; |
| 2 par suite de l'hypocrisie d'hommes proférant le mensonge et dont la conscience porte la marque de l'infamie, | 2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; |
| 3 qui interdisent le mariage et ordonnent de s'abstenir d'aliments que Dieu a créés pour que les fidèles et ceux qui ont reconnu la vérité en usent avec action de grâces, | 3 Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth. |
| 4 Car tout ce que Dieu a créé est bon, et rien n'est à rejeter de ce qui se prend avec action de grâces, | 4 For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving: |
| 5 parce que c'est sanctifié par la parole de Dieu et la prière. | 5 For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer. |
| 6 En exposant ces choses aux frères, tu seras un bon ministre du Christ Jésus, nourri des paroles de la foi et de la bonne doctrine que tu as suivie avec soin. | 6 If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained. |
| 7 Quant aux fables insensées et aux radotages, évite-les, et exerce-toi à la piété. | 7 But refuse profane and old wives' fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness. |
| 8 Car l'exercice corporel est utile à peu de chose; mais la piété est utile à tout, ayant la promesse de la vie présente et de la vie future. | 8 For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come. |
| 9 C'est là une parole certaine, et tout à fait digne d'être reçue. | 9 This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation. |
| 10 Car c'est pour cela que nous supportons les fatigues et les outrages, parce que nous espérons au Dieu vivant, qui est le sauveur de tous les hommes, principalement des fidèles. | 10 For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe. |
| 11 Commande ces choses et enseigne-les. | 11 These things command and teach. |
| 12 Que personne ne méprise ta jeunesse; mais sois un modèle des fidèles dans les paroles, dans la conduite, dans la charité, dans la foi, dans la chasteté. | 12 Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity. |
| 13 Jusqu'à ce que je vienne, applique-toi à la lecture, à l'exhortation et à l'enseignement. | 13 Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine. |
| 14 Ne néglige pas la grâce qui est en toi, qui t'a été donnée, suivant une révélation prophétique, lorsque les prêtres t'imposèrent les mains. | 14 Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery. |
| 15 Médite ces choses, sois tout en elles, afin que ton progrès soit manifeste à tous. | 15 Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all. |
| 16 Veille sur toi-même et sur l'enseignement; persévère dans ces choses: car, en faisant cela, tu te sauveras toi-même et ceux qui t'écoutent. | 16 Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee. |
