| 1 Or les enfants d'Israël violèrent la défense qui leur avait faite, et ils prirent pour eux de ce qui avait mis sous l'anathème. Car Achan, fils de Carmi, fils de Zabdi, fils de Zaré de la tribu de Juda, déroba quelque chose de l'anathème; et le Seigneur S'irrita contre les enfants d'Israël. | 1 But the Israelites were unfaithful to the curse of destruction. Achan son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son ofZerah, of the tribe of Judah, took something that fell under the curse of destruction, and the anger of Yahwehwas aroused against the Israelites. |
| 2 En même temps, Josué envoya de Jéricho des hommes contre Haï qui est près de Béthaven, à l'orient de la ville de Béthel; et il leur dit: Allez, et reconnaissez le pays. Ils firent ce qui leur avait été commandé, et reconnurent la ville de Haï. | 2 Now Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai (which is near Beth-Aven), to the east of Bethel, having said tothem, 'Go up and reconnoitre the country.' They went up and reconnoitred Ai. |
| 3 Et, étant revenus, ils lui dirent: Qu'on ne fasse pas marcher tout le peuple; mais qu'on envoie deux ou trois mille hommes pour détruire cette ville. Qu'est-il nécessaire de fatiguer inutilement tout le peuple contre un si petit nombre d'ennemis? | 3 Coming back to Joshua, they said, 'There is no need for the whole people to go up; let some two orthree thousand go and attack Ai. Spare the whole people such an effort; there are only a few of them!' |
| 4 Trois mille hommes marchèrent donc en armes contre Haï. Mais ayant tourné le dos aussitôt, | 4 Of the people, some three thousand marched up, but these broke before the people of Ai, |
| 5 ils furent chargés par ceux de la ville d'Haï, et il y en eut trente-six de tués. Les ennemis les poursuivirent depuis leur porte jusqu'à Sabarim, et tuèrent ceux qui s'enfuyaient vers la descente. Alors le coeur du peuple fut saisi de crainte, et devint comme de l'eau qui s'écoule. | 5 who killed some thirty-six of them and pursued them from the town gate as far as Shebarim, and on theslope cut them to pieces. The hearts of the people melted away and turned to water. |
| 6 Mais Josué déchira ses vêtements, se jeta visage contre terre devant l'arche du Seigneur, et demeura prosterné jusqu'au soir, avec tous les anciens d'Israël; et ils se mirent de la poussière sur la tête. | 6 Joshua then tore his clothes and prostrated himself before the ark of Yahweh til nightfal ; the elders ofIsrael did the same, and all poured dust on their heads. |
| 7 Et Josué dit: Hélas, Seigneur mon Dieu! avez-Vous donc voulu faire passer à ce peuple le fleuve du Jourdain pour nous livrer entre les mains des Amorrhéens, et pour nous perdre? Il eût été à souhaiter que nous fussions demeurés au delà du Jourdain, comme nous avions commencé de le faire. | 7 And Joshua said, 'Alas, Lord Yahweh, why did you bother to bring this nation across the Jordan, if it wasonly to put us at the mercy of the Amorites and destroy us? If only we could have settled down on the other sideof the Jordan! |
| 8 Que dirai-je? ô Dieu mon Seigneur, en voyant Israël prendre la fuite devant ses ennemis? | 8 Forgive me, Lord, but what can I say, now that Israel has turned tail on the enemy? |
| 9 Les Chananéens et tous les habitants du pays l'entendront dirent; et, s'unissant ensemble, ils nous envelopperont et extermineront notre nom de dessus la terre; et alors que deviendra la gloire de Votre grand nom? | 9 The Canaanites, al the inhabitants of the land, wil hear of it; they wil unite against us to wipe our namefrom the earth. And what wil you do about your great Name then?' |
| 10 Le Seigneur dit à Josué: Levez-vous; pourquoi vous tenez-vous couché par terre? | 10 Yahweh said to Joshua, 'Stand up! Why are you lying prostrate like this? |
| 11 Israël a péché, et il a traité que J'avais fait avec lui. Ils ont pris de ce qui était sous l'anathème; ils en ont dérobé, ils ont menti, et ils ont caché leur vol parmi les bagages. | 11 Israel has sinned; they have violated the covenant which I imposed on them. They have gone so far asto take what was under the curse of destruction, they have even stolen it; they have actual y hidden it; they have put it in their baggage. |
| 12 Israël ne pourra plus tenir contre ses ennemis, et il fuira devant eux, parce qu'il s'est souillé de l'anathème. Je ne serai plus avec vous, jusqu'à ce que vous ayez exterminé celui qui est coupable de ce crime. | 12 That is why the Israelites cannot stand up to their foes, why they have turned tail on their enemies:because they have come under the curse of destruction themselves. Unless you get rid of the object among youwhich has been put under the curse of destruction, I shal be with you no longer.' |
| 13 Levez-vous, sanctifiez le peuple, et dites-leur: Sanctifiez-vous pour demain; car voici ce que dit le Seigneur, le Dieu d'Israël: L'anathème est au milieu de vous, Israël. Vous ne pouvez soutenir l'effort de vos ennemis, jusqu'à ce que celui qui est souillé de ce crime ait été exterminé d'au milieu de vous. | 13 'Get up, sanctify the people and say, "Sanctify yourselves for tomorrow, since Yahweh, the God ofIsrael, declares: The curse of destruction has now fal en on you, Israel; you wil not be able to stand up to yourenemies, until you have rid yourselves of that object which has been put under the curse of destruction. |
| 14 Vous vous présenterez demain matin chacun dans votre tribu; et le sort étant tombé sur l'une des tribus, on passera de cette tribu aux familles qui la composent, des familles aux maisons, et de la maison à chaque particulier. | 14 Tomorrow morning, therefore, you wil come forward tribe by tribe, and then the tribe which Yahwehselects by lot will come forward clan by clan, and the clan which Yahweh selects by lot will come forward familyby family, and the family which Yahweh selects by lot wil come forward man by man. |
| 15 Et quiconque sera trouvé coupable de ce crime, sera brûlé avec tout ce qui lui appartient, parce qu'il a violé l'alliance du Seigneur, et qu'il a fait une chose détestable dans Israël. | 15 And the man indicated by lot as regards the object which has been put under the curse of destructionwil be delivered to the flames, he and al his possessions, for having violated the covenant with Yahweh and forhaving committed an infamy in Israel." ' |
| 16 Josué, se levant donc de grand matin, fit assembler Israël par tribus; et le sort tomba sur la tribu de Juda. | 16 Joshua got up early; he made Israel come forward tribe by tribe, and the lot indicated the tribe ofJudah. |
| 17 Lorsqu'elle se fut présentée avec toutes ses familles, le sort tomba sur la famille de Zaré. Cette famille s'étant présentée par maisons, le sort tomba sur la maison de Zabdi, | 17 He summoned the clans of Judah, and the lot indicated the clan of Zerah. He summoned the clan ofZerah, family by family, and the lot indicated Zabdi. |
| 18 dont tous les membres s'étant présentés séparément, le sort tomba sur Achan, fils de Charmi, fils de Zabdi, fils de Zaré de la tribu de Juda. | 18 Joshua then summoned the family of Zabdi, man by man, and the lot indicated Achan son of Carmi,son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah. |
| 19 Et Josué dit à Achan: Mon fils, rendez gloire au Seigneur, Dieu d'Israël. Confessez votre faute, et déclarez-moi ce que vous avez fait, sans en rien cacher. | 19 Joshua then said to Achan, 'My son, give glory to Yahweh, God of Israel, and confess; tel me whatyou have done and hide nothing from me.' |
| 20 Et Achan répondit à Josué: Il est vrai que j'ai péché contre le Seigneur, Dieu d'Israël; et voici tout ce que j'ai fait. | 20 Achan replied to Joshua, 'Yes, I am the man who has sinned against Yahweh, God of Israel, and thisis what I have done. |
| 21 Ayant vu parmi les dépouilles un manteau d'écarlate qui était fort bon, et deux cents sicles d'argent, avec une règle d'or de cinquante sicles, je les convoitai, et, les ayant pris, je les cachai en terre au milieu de ma tente, et je cachai aussi l'argent dans une fosse que je fis. | 21 In the loot, I saw a fine robe from Shinar and two hundred shekels of silver and an ingot of goldweighing fifty shekels, I set my heart on them and I took them. They are hidden in the ground inside my tent, withthe silver underneath.' |
| 22 Josué envoya donc des gens qui coururent à la tente d'Achan, et trouvèrent tout ce qui était caché, avec l'argent, à l'endroit qu'il avait indiqué. | 22 Joshua sent messengers; they ran to the tent, and the robe was indeed hidden in the tent, with thesilver underneath. |
| 23 Et, ayant tiré toutes ces choses hors de sa tente, ils les portèrent à Josué et à tous les enfants d'Israël, et les jetèrent devant le Seigneur. | 23 They took the things out of the tent and, bringing them to Joshua and all the Israelites, laid them outbefore Yahweh. |
| 24 Or Josué, et tout Israël qui était avec lui, ayant pris Achan, fils de Zaré, et l'argent, le manteau et la règle d'or, avec ses fils et ses filles, ses boeufs, ses ânes et ses brebis, et sa tente même et tout ce qui était à lui, les menèrent dans la vallée d'Achor, | 24 Joshua then took Achan son of Zerah and led him up to the Vale of Achor, with the silver and the robeand the ingot of gold, his sons, his daughters, his oxen, his donkeys, his sheep, his goats, his tent and al hisbelongings. Al Israel went with him. |
| 25 où Josué lui dit: Parce que vous nous avez tous troublés, que le Seigneur vous trouble et vous extermine en ce jour-ci. Et tout Israël le lapida; et tout ce qui avait été à lui fut consumé par le feu. | 25 Joshua said, 'Why have you brought misfortune on us? Today may Yahweh bring misfortune on you!'And all Israel stoned him to death (and they burned them and threw stones at them). |
| 26 Et ils amassèrent sur lui un grand monceau de pierres, qui est demeuré jusqu'à ce jour. Ainsi la fureur du Seigneur se détourna de dessus eux; et ce lieu fut appelé et s'appelle encore la vallée d'Achor. | 26 Over him, they raised a great mound of stones, which is still there today. Yahweh then relented fromhis fierce anger. That was why the place was cal ed the Vale of Achor, as it stil is today. |
