| 1 Mon fils lorsque tu entreras au service de Dieu, demeure ferme dans la justice et dans la crainte, et prépare ton âme à la tentation. | 1 Son, when thou comest to the service of God, stand in justice and in fear, and prepare thy soul for temptation. |
| 2 Humilie ton coeur et attends patiemment; prête l'oreille, et reçois les paroles de la sagesse, et ne te hâte point au temps de l'épreuve. | 2 Humble thy heart, and endure: incline thy ear, and receive the words of understanding: and make not haste in the time of clouds. |
| 3 Souffre les retards de Dieu; demeure uni à Dieu, et attends patiemment, afin que ta vie s'accroisse en vue de la fin. | 3 Wait on God with patience: join thyself to God, and endure, that thy life may be increased in the latter end. |
| 4 Accepte tout ce qui te sera imposé, demeure en paix dans la douleur, et dans ton humiliation conserve la patience; | 4 Take all that shall be brought upon thee: and in thy sorrow endure, and in thy humiliation keep patience. |
| 5 car l'or et l'argent s'éprouvent au feu, et les hommes aimés de Dieu s'éprouvent au creuset de l'humiliation. | 5 For gold and silver are tried in the fire, but acceptable men in the furnace of humiliation. |
| 6 Aie confiance en Dieu, et Il te rétablira; rends ta voie droite, et espère en Lui; conserve Sa crainte et vieillis avec elle. | 6 Believe God, and he will recover thee: and direct thy way, and trust in him. Keep his fear, and grow old therein. |
| 7 Vous qui craignez le Seigneur, attendez sa miséricorde, et ne vous détournez pas de Lui, de peur de tomber. | 7 Ye that fear the Lord, wait for his mercy: and go not aside from him, lest ye fall. |
| 8 Vous qui craignez le Seigneur, ayez foi en Lui, et vous ne perdrez pas votre récompense. | 8 Ye that fear the Lord, believe him: and your reward shall not be made void. |
| 9 Vous qui craignez le Seigneur, espérez en Lui, et Sa miséricorde sera votre joie. | 9 Ye that fear the Lord, hope in him: and mercy shall come to you for your delight. |
| 10 Vous qui craignez le Seigneur, aimez-Le, et vos coeurs seront remplis de lumière. | 10 Ye that fear the Lord, love him, and your hearts shall be enlightened. |
| 11 Considérez, mes enfants, les générations humaines, et sachez que personne n'a espéré au Seigneur et a été confondu. | 11 My children behold the generations of men: and know ye that no one hath hoped in the Lord, and hath been confounded. |
| 12 Qui donc est demeuré ferme dans Ses commandements et a été abandonné? ou qui L'a invoqué et a été méprisé de Lui? | 12 For who hath continued in his commandment, and hath been forsaken? or who hath called upon him, and he despised him? |
| 13 Car Dieu est bon et misêricordieux; Il pardonne les péchés au jour de la tribulation, et Il est le protecteur de tous ceux qui Le cherchent dans la vérité. | 13 For God is compassionate and merciful, and will forgive sins in the day of tribulation: and he is a protector to all that seek him in truth. |
| 14 Malheur au coeur double, et aux lèvres criminelles, et aux mains qui font le mal, et au pécheur qui marche sur la terre par deux voies! | 14 Woe to them that are of a double heart and to wicked lips, and to the hands that do evil, and to the sinner that goeth on the earth two ways. |
| 15 Malheur aux lâches de coeur, qui ne se fient point à Dieu, et qui pour cela ne seront pas protégés par Lui! | 15 Woe to them that are fainthearted, who believe not God: and therefore they shall not be protected by him. |
| 16 Malheur à ceux qui ont perdu la patience, et qui ont quitté les voies droites, et qui se sont détournés dans des voies mauvaises! | 16 Woe to them that have lost patience, and that have forsaken the right ways, and have gone aside into crooked ways. |
| 17 Et que feront-ils lorsque le Seigneur commencera à tout examiner? | 17 And what will they do, when the Lord shall begin to examine? |
| 18 Ceux qui craignent le Seigneur ne seront point incrédules à Sa parole, et ceux qui L'aiment demeureront fermes dans Sa voie. | 18 They that fear the Lord, will not be incredulous to his word: and they that love him, will keep his way. |
| 19 Ceux qui craignent le Seigneur rechercheront ce qui Lui est agréable, et ceux qui L'aiment seront remplis de Sa loi. | 19 They that fear the Lord, will seek after the things that are well pleasing to him: and they that love him, shall be filled with his law. |
| 20 Ceux qui craignent le Seigneur prépareront leur coeur, et sanctifieront leurs âmes en Sa présence. | 20 They that fear the Lord, will prepare their hearts, and in his sight will sanctify their souls. |
| 21 Ceux qui craignent le Seigneur gardent Ses commandements, et ils auront patience jusqu'à Sa visite, | 21 They that fear the Lord, keep his Commandments, and will have patience even until his visitation, |
| 22 en disant: Si nous ne faisons pénitence, c'est dans les mains du Seigneur que nous tomberons, et non dans les mains des hommes. | 22 Saying: If we do not penance, we shall fall into the hands of the Lord, and not into the hands of men. |
| 23 Car autant Sa majesté est élevée, autant est grande Sa miséricorde. | 23 For according to his greatness, so also is his mercy with him. |
