| 1 Josaphat, son fils, régna à sa place, et il se fortifia contre Israël. | 1 And Jehoshaphat his son reigned in his stead, and strengthened himself against Israel. |
| 2 Il mit des troupes dans toutes les villes de Juda fermées de murailles, et il distribua des garnisons dans le pays de Juda, et dans les villes d'Ephraïm qu'Asa, son père, avait prises. | 2 And he placed forces in all the fenced cities of Judah, and set garrisons in the land of Judah, and in the cities of Ephraim, which Asa his father had taken. |
| 3 Et le Seigneur fut avec Josaphat, parce qu'il marcha dans les premières voies de David son aïeul, et qu'il ne mit point sa confiance dans Baal, | 3 And the LORD was with Jehoshaphat, because he walked in the first ways of his father David, and sought not unto Baalim; |
| 4 mais dans le Dieu de son père; et il marcha selon Ses préceptes, et non suivant les dérèglements d'Israël. | 4 But sought to the LORD God of his father, and walked in his commandments, and not after the doings of Israel. |
| 5 ainsi Dieu affermit la royauté dans sa main, et tout Juda lui apporta des présents, et il eut une infinité de richesses et une très grande gloire. | 5 Therefore the LORD stablished the kingdom in his hand; and all Judah brought to Jehoshaphat presents; and he had riches and honour in abundance. |
| 6 Son coeur s'étant rempli de zèle pour les préceptes du Seigneur, il enleva de Juda les hauts lieux et les bois sacrés. | 6 And his heart was lifted up in the ways of the LORD: moreover he took away the high places and groves out of Judah. |
| 7 La troisième année de son règne, il envoya plusieurs de ses princes, Benhaïl, Obdias, Zacharie, Nathanaël et Michée, enseigner dans les villes de Juda | 7 Also in the third year of his reign he sent to his princes, even to Ben-hail, and to Obadiah, and to Zechariah, and to Nethaneel, and to Michaiah, to teach in the cities of Judah. |
| 8 et avec eux les lévites Séméias, Nathanias et Zabadias, Asaël, Sémiramoth, et Jonathan, Adonias, Tobias, et Tob-Adonias, tous lévites, et les prêtres Elisama et Joram. | 8 And with them he sent Levites, even Shemaiah, and Nethaniah, and Zebadiah, and Asahel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehonathan, and Adonijah, and Tobijah, and Tob-adonijah, Levites; and with them Elishama and Jehoram, priests. |
| 9 Et ils instruisaient le peuple de Juda, et portaient avec eux le livre de la loi du Seigneur; et ils parcouraient toutes les villes de Juda, et enseignaient le peuple. | 9 And they taught in Judah, and had the book of the law of the LORD with them, and went about throughout all the cities of Judah, and taught the people. |
| 10 Ainsi la terreur du Seigneur se répandit dans tous les royaumes qui étaient aux environs de Juda, et ils n'osaient point prendre les armes contre Josaphat. | 10 And the fear of the LORD fell upon all the kingdoms of the lands that were round about Judah, so that they made no war against Jehoshaphat. |
| 11 Les Philiistins eux-mêmes apportaient des présents à Josaphat, et ils lui payaient un tribut d'argent. Les Arabes lui amenaient des troupeaux, sept mille sept cents moutons et autant de boucs. | 11 Also some of the Philistines brought Jehoshaphat presents, and tribute silver; and the Arabians brought him flocks, seven thousand and seven hundred rams, and seven thousand and seven hundred he goats. |
| 12 Josaphat devint donc puissant, et s'éleva jusqu'à un très haut point de grandeur; et il bâtit dans Juda des forteresses en forme de tours, et des villes murées. | 12 And Jehoshaphat waxed great exceedingly; and he built in Judah castles, and cities of store. |
| 13 Et il fit de grands travaux dans les villes de Juda. Et il avait aussi dans Jérusalem des gens aguerris et vaillants, | 13 And he had much business in the cities of Judah: and the men of war, mighty men of valour, were in Jerusalem. |
| 14 dont voici le dénombrement, selon les maisons et les familles de chacun. Dans Juda, les principaux officiers de l'armée étaient : Ednas, le chef, qui avait avec lui trois cent mille hommes très vaillants. | 14 And these are the numbers of them according to the house of their fathers: Of Judah, the captains of thousands; Adnah the chief, and with him mighty men of valour three hundred thousand. |
| 15 Après lui, le premier était Johanan, qui avait avec lui deux cent quatre-vingt mille hommes. | 15 And next to him was Jehohanan the captain, and with him two hundred and fourscore thousand. |
| 16 Après celui-ci était Amasias, fils de Zéchri, consacré au Seigneur, et avec lui deux cent mille hommes vaillants. | 16 And next him was Amasiah the son of Zichri, who willingly offered himself unto the LORD; and with him two hundred thousand mighty men of valour. |
| 17 Il était suivi d'Eliada, redoutable dans les combats, qui commandait deux cent mille hommes armés d'arcs et de boucliers. | 17 And of Benjamin; Eliada a mighty man of valour, and with him armed men with bow and shield two hundred thousand. |
| 18 Après lui était aussi Jozabad, qui était à la tête de cent quatre-vingt mille hommes prêts à combattre. | 18 And next him was Jehozabad, and with him an hundred and fourscore thousand ready prepared for the war. |
| 19 Toutes ces troupes étaient sous la main du roi, sans compter les autres qu'il avait placées dans les villes murées, dans tout le royaume de Juda. | 19 These waited on the king, beside those whom the king put in the fenced cities throughout all Judah. |
