1 Mon fils, si tu t’es porté garant pour un compagnon, si tu t’es engagé envers un inconnu,	1 My son, if you have taken a pledge on behalf of your friend, then you have bound your hand to an outsider,
2 te voilà lié par tes propres paroles, prisonnier de tes engagements.	2 then you are ensnared by the words of your own mouth, and taken captive by your own words.
3 Fais donc ceci, mon fils: libère-toi au plus vite: ne vois-tu pas que tu es à la merci d’autrui? Va le voir, mets-toi à ses genoux, supplie!	3 Therefore, my son, do what I say, and free yourself, for you have fallen into the hand of your neighbor. Run, hurry, awaken your friend.
4 N’accorde ni sommeil à tes yeux, ni repos à tes paupières;	4 Do not grant sleep to your eyes, nor let your eyelids slumber.
5 il faut te dégager, comme le cerf de son piège, comme l’oiseau du filet!	5 Rescue yourself like a gazelle from the hand, and like a bird from the hand of the fowler.
6 Va voir la fourmi, paresseux; vois comme elle se démène et deviens sage.	6 Go to the ant, you lazy one, and consider her ways, and so learn wisdom.
7 Il n’y a chez elle ni chef, ni surveillant, ni maître,	7 For though she has no ruler, nor instructor, nor leader,
8 mais elle entasse en été des provisions, elle amasse sa nourriture au temps de la moisson.	8 she provides meals for herself in the summer, and she gathers at the harvest what she may eat.
9 Combien de temps encore resteras-tu allongé, paresseux! Quand vas-tu sortir du lit?	9 How long will you slumber, you lazy one? When will you rise up from your sleep?
10 On dort un peu, puis on somnole un moment, puis on s’allonge les bras croisés…	10 You will sleep a little, you will slumber a little, you will fold your hands a little to sleep,
11 et soudain la pauvreté te surprend comme un rôdeur, la misère fondra sur toi comme un pillard.	11 and then destitution will meet with you, like a traveler, and poverty, like an armed man. Yet truly, if you would be diligent, then your harvest will arrive like a fountain, and destitution will flee far from you.
12 Le vaurien, le malfaisant, passe en ricanant;	12 An apostate man, a harmful man, walks with a perverse mouth;
13 il cligne des yeux, traîne les pieds, fait claquer ses doigts.	13 he winks with the eyes, touches with the foot, speaks with the finger.
14 Il est toujours à préparer quelque tromperie, il provoque à tout moment des querelles.	14 With a depraved heart he devises evil, and at all times he sows conflict.
15 Mais aussi, sans avertir, le malheur fondra sur lui, d’un coup il sera brisé et il ne s’en remettra pas.	15 To this one, his perdition will arrive promptly, and he shall be crushed suddenly: he will no longer have any remedy.
16 Il y a six choses que le Seigneur déteste, et même sept qu’il a en horreur:	16 Six things there are that the Lord hates, and the seventh, his soul detests:
17 le regard méprisant, la langue menteuse, les mains qui répandent le sang innocent,	17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood,
18 le cœur qui médite des projets coupables, les pieds qui courent, impatients de faire le mal,	18 a heart that devises the most wicked thoughts, feet running swiftly unto evil,
19 le faux témoin qui parle pour mentir, et l’homme qui provoque la mésentente entre frères.	19 a deceitful witness bringing forth lies, and he who sows discord among brothers.
20 Mon fils, observe les conseils de ton père, ne rejette pas l’enseignement de ta mère.	20 My son, preserve the precepts of your father, and do not dismiss the law of your mother.
21 Tiens-les bien amarrés sur ton cœur, attache-les autour de ton cou.	21 Bind them to your heart unceasingly, and encircle them around your throat.
22 Ils guideront tes démarches; dans ton sommeil ils veilleront sur toi; dès ton réveil ils te conseilleront.	22 When you walk, let them keep step with you. When you sleep, let them guard you. And when you keep watch, speak with them.
23 Le commandement est une lampe, la loi, une lumière; les réprimandes t’enseignent le chemin de la vie.	23 For commandment is a lamp, and law is a light, and the reproofs of discipline are the way of life.
24 Elles te garderont de la femme mauvaise, des paroles douces de la femme d’un autre.	24 So may they guard you from an evil woman, and from the flattering tongue of the outsider.
25 Ne rêve pas à sa beauté, ne te laisse pas prendre à ses œillades.	25 Let not your heart desire her beauty; do not be captivated by her winks.
26 La prostituée ne cherche qu’un morceau de pain, mais la femme adultère, ce qu’il lui faut c’est une vie précieuse.	26 For the price of a prostitute is only one loaf. Yet the woman seizes the precious soul of a man.
27 Peut-on emporter des braises dans ses poches et que les habits ne prennent pas feu?	27 Would a man be able to conceal fire in his bosom, so that his garments would not burn?
28 Peut-on marcher sur des charbons ardents sans se brûler les pieds?	28 Or could he walk over burning coals, so that his feet would not be burned?
29 C’est pareil pour celui qui va vers la femme de son prochain: qui la touche ne restera pas impuni.	29 So also, he who enters to the wife of his neighbor shall not be clean when he touches her.
30 On ne condamne pas le chapardeur affamé qui vole pour se remplir l’estomac.	30 Not so great is the fault when someone has stolen. For he steals so as to satisfy a hungry soul.
31 Pourtant, s’il est pris, il rendra sept fois plus: toute sa maison y passera.	31 Also, if he is apprehended, he shall repay sevenfold and hand over all the substance of his house.
32 C’est une tout autre folie que de commettre l’adultère avec une femme; celui qui s’y risque se perd lui-même.	32 But whoever is an adulterer, because of the emptiness of his heart, will destroy his own soul.
33 Il récoltera des coups et le déshonneur, il y laissera sa réputation.	33 He gathers shame and dishonor to himself, and his disgrace will not be wiped away.
34 Car la jalousie met le mari en fureur; à la première occasion il se vengera sans pitié.	34 For the jealousy and fury of the husband will not spare him on the day of vindication,
35 Il n’acceptera aucune compensation, tes cadeaux ne le toucheront pas.	35 nor will he agree to the pleadings of anyone, nor will he accept, as repayment, a multitude of gifts.
