Psalms 34

1 Of David himself. O Lord, judge those who harm me; assail those who attack me.	1 (Di David). Giudica, o Signore, coloro che mi fanno del male, combatti quelli che mi combattono.
2 Take hold of weapons and a shield, and rise up in assistance to me.	2 Prendi le armi e lo scudo, e sorgi in mio aiuto.
3 Bring forth the spear, and close in on those who persecute me. Say to my soul, “I am your salvation.”	3 Tira fuori la spada, e sbarra il passaggio a quelli che mi perseguitano, dì all'anima mia: « Io sono la tua salvezza ».
4 Let them be confounded and in awe, who pursue my soul. Let them be turned back and be confounded, who think up evil against me.	4 Sian confusi e coperti di vergogna quelli che attentano alla mia vita, voltino le spalle svergognati quelli che mi traman del male.
5 May they become like dust before the face of the wind, and let the Angel of the Lord hem them in.	5 Diventino come polvere dinanzi al vento, e l'angelo del Signore li metta alle strette.
6 May their way become dark and slippery, and may the Angel of the Lord pursue them.	6 La loro via sia tenebrosa e sdruccevole, e l'angelo del Signore li incalzi;
7 For, without cause, they have concealed their snare for me unto destruction. Over nothing, they have rebuked my soul.	7 Senza motivi mi han teso occultamente il loro laccio di morte, senza ragione hanno oltraggiato l'anima mia.
8 Let the snare, of which he is ignorant, come upon him, and let the deception, which he has hidden, take hold of him: and may he fall into that very snare.	8 Ci cada lui in un laccio ignorato, s'impigli nella rete che ha nascosta, resti preso nel suo laccio stesso.
9 But my soul will exult in the Lord and delight over his salvation.	9 Ma l'anima mia esulterà nel Signore, e si rallegrerà nel suo salvatore.
10 All my bones will say, “Lord, who is like you?” He rescues the needy from the hand of the stronger one, the indigent and the poor from those who plunder him.	10 Tutte le mie ossa diranno: « Signore, chi è simile a te, che liberi il misero da chi ne può più di lui, l'indigente e il povero da quelli che lo spogliano? »
11 Unfair witnesses have risen up, interrogating me about things of which I am ignorant.	11 Testimoni iniqui, levatisi su, m'interrogano su cose da me ignorate.
12 They repaid me evil for good, to the deprivation of my soul.	12 Per il bene mi rendon del male: desolazione dell'anima mia.
13 But as for me, when they were harassing me, I was clothed with haircloth. I humbled my soul with fasting, and my prayer will become my sinews.	13 Ma io, tra le loro molestie, mi vestivo di cilizio, umiliavo nel digiuno l'anima mia, e la mia preghiera ritornava nel mio seno.
14 Like a neighbor, and like our brother, so did I please; like one mourning and contrite, so was I humbled.	14 Come parenti, come fratelli, li trattavo con amore, come uno in lutto e in tristezza mi umiliavo.
15 And they have been joyful against me, and they joined together. Scourges have been gathered over me, and I was ignorant of it.	15 Ed essi fan festa contro di me e s'adunano: accumulan sopra di me i flagelli, e non so perchè.
16 They have been scattered, yet they were unremorseful. They have tested me. They scoffed at me with scorn. They gnashed their teeth over me.	16 Sebbene dispersi, non si pentono, anzi mi tentano, mi carican d'insulti, digrignano contro di me i loro denti.
17 Lord, when will you look down upon me? Restore my soul from before their malice, my only one from before the lions.	17 Signore, fino a quando starai a vedere? Libera l'anima mia dalla loro malvagità, l'unica mia dai leoni.
18 I will confess to you in a great Church. I will praise you among a weighty people.	18 Celebrerò le tue lodi nella grande adunanza, ti loderò in mezzo al popolo numeroso.
19 May those who are my unjust adversaries not be glad over me: those who have hated me without cause, and who nod agreement with their eyes.	19 Non godan sopra di me i miei ingiusti avversari, che mi odiano senza ragione e strizzan l'occhio.
20 For indeed, they spoke peacefully to me; and speaking with passion to the earth, they intended deceit.	20 Con me infatti ripeton parole di pace, ma nell'ira, parlando alla terra, meditano inganni.
21 And they opened their mouth wide over me. They said, “Well, well, our eyes have seen.”	21 Spalancati contro di me la loro bocca, esclamando: « Bene! Bene! Han veduto i nostri occhi! »
22 You have seen, O Lord, do not be silent. Lord, do not depart from me.	22 Tu hai visto, o Signore, non tacere; Signore, non t'allontanare da me.
23 Rise up and be attentive to my judgment, to my cause, my God and my Lord.	23 Sorgi, o Signore, a difendere il mio diritto, la mia causa, mio Dio e mio Signore.
24 Judge me according to your justice, O Lord, my God, and do not let them be glad over me.	24 Giudicami secondo la tua giustizia, o Signore mio Dio, ed essi non abbiano a menar trionfo su me.
25 Do not let them say in their hearts, “Well, well, to our soul.” Neither let them say, “We have devoured him.”	25 E non dicano in cuor loro: « Ah! Ah! Abbiamo trionfato! » Non giungano a dire: « L'abbiamo divorato ».
26 Let them blush and be in awe together, those who congratulate at my misfortunes. Let them be clothed with confusion and awe, who speak great things against me.	26 Sian confusi e insieme svergognati, quelli che si rallegrano dei miei mali. Sian coperti di confusione e di rossore coloro che parlano con spavalderia contro di me.
27 Let them exult and rejoice, who wish my justice, and let them ever say, “The Lord be magnified,” who will the peace of his servant.	27 Esultino e si rallegrino quelli che hanno a cuore la mia giustizia; e dicano sempre « Sia esaltato il Signore » coloro che desiderano la pace del suo servo.
28 And so my tongue will express your justice: your praise all day long.	28 La mia lingua celebrerà la tua giustizia: la tua lode tutto il giorno.
