Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John1 And so, when Jesus realized that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made more disciples and baptized more than John,
(although Jesus himself was not baptizing, just his disciples),2 (though Jesus himself was not baptizing, but only his disciples)
he left Judea and returned to Galilee.3 he left behind Judea, and he traveled again to Galilee.
He had to pass through Samaria.4 Now he needed to cross through Samaria.
So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of land that Jacob had given to his son Joseph.5 Therefore, he went into a city of Samaria which is called Sychar, near the estate which Jacob gave to his son Joseph.
Jacob's well was there. Jesus, tired from his journey, sat down there at the well. It was about noon.6 And Jacob’s well was there. And so Jesus, being tired from the journey, was sitting in a certain way on the well. It was about the sixth hour.
A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, "Give me a drink."7 A woman of Samaria arrived to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me to drink.”
His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.8 For his disciples had gone into the city in order to buy food.
The Samaritan woman said to him, "How can you, a Jew, ask me, a Samaritan woman, for a drink?" (For Jews use nothing in common with Samaritans.)9 And so, that Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, being a Jew, are requesting a drink from me, though I am a Samaritan woman?” For the Jews do not associate with the Samaritans.
Jesus answered and said to her, "If you knew the gift of God and who is saying to you, 'Give me a drink,' you would have asked him and he would have given you living water."10 Jesus responded and said to her: “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who is saying to you, ‘Give me to drink,’ perhaps you would have made a request of him, and he would have given you living water.”
(The woman) said to him, "Sir, you do not even have a bucket and the cistern is deep; where then can you get this living water?11 The woman said to him: “Lord, you do not have anything with which to draw water, and the well is deep. From where, then, do you have living water?
Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us this cistern and drank from it himself with his children and his flocks?"12 Surely, you are not greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and who drank from it, with his sons and his cattle?”
Jesus answered and said to her, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again;13 Jesus responded and said to her: “All who drink from this water will thirst again. But whoever shall drink from the water that I will give to him will not thirst for eternity.
but whoever drinks the water I shall give will never thirst; the water I shall give will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life."14 Instead, the water that I will give to him will become in him a fountain of water, springing up into eternal life.”
The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water, so that I may not be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water."15 The woman said to him, “Lord, give me this water, so that I may not thirst and may not come here to draw water.”
Jesus said to her, "Go call your husband and come back."16 Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and return here.”
The woman answered and said to him, "I do not have a husband." Jesus answered her, "You are right in saying, 'I do not have a husband.'17 The woman responded and said, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her: “You have spoken well, in saying, ‘I have no husband.’
For you have had five husbands, and the one you have now is not your husband. What you have said is true."18 For you have had five husbands, but he whom you have now is not your husband. You have spoken this in truth.”
The woman said to him, "Sir, I can see that you are a prophet.19 The woman said to him: “Lord, I see that you are a Prophet.
Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain; but you people say that the place to worship is in Jerusalem."20 Our fathers worshipped on this mountain, but you say that Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship.”
Jesus said to her, "Believe me, woman, the hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.21 Jesus said to her: “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when you shall worship the Father, neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem.
You people worship what you do not understand; we worship what we understand, because salvation is from the Jews.22 You worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know. For salvation is from the Jews.
But the hour is coming, and is now here, when true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and truth; and indeed the Father seeks such people to worship him.23 But the hour is coming, and it is now, when true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth. For the Father also seeks such persons who may worship him.
God is Spirit, and those who worship him must worship in Spirit and truth."24 God is Spirit. And so, those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.”
The woman said to him, "I know that the Messiah is coming, the one called the Anointed; when he comes, he will tell us everything."25 The woman said to him: “I know that the Messiah is coming (who is called the Christ). And then, when he will have arrived, he will announce everything to us.”
Jesus said to her, "I am he, the one who is speaking with you."26 Jesus said to her: “I am he, the one who is speaking with you.”
At that moment his disciples returned, and were amazed that he was talking with a woman, but still no one said, "What are you looking for?" or "Why are you talking with her?"27 And then his disciples arrived. And they wondered that he was speaking with the woman. Yet no one said: “What are you seeking?” or, “Why are you talking with her?”
The woman left her water jar and went into the town and said to the people,28 And so the woman left behind her water jar and went into the city. And she said to the men there:
"Come see a man who told me everything I have done. Could he possibly be the Messiah?"29 “Come and see a man who has told me all the things that I have done. Is he not the Christ?”
They went out of the town and came to him.30 Therefore, they went out of the city and came to him.
Meanwhile, the disciples urged him, "Rabbi, eat."31 Meanwhile, the disciples petitioned him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.”
But he said to them, "I have food to eat of which you do not know."32 But he said to them, “I have food to eat which you do not know.”
So the disciples said to one another, "Could someone have brought him something to eat?"33 Therefore, the disciples said to one another, “Could someone have brought him something to eat?”
Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of the one who sent me and to finish his work.34 Jesus said to them: “My food is to do the will of the One who sent me, so that I may perfect his work.
Do you not say, 'In four months the harvest will be here'? I tell you, look up and see the fields ripe for the harvest.35 Do you not say, ‘There are still four months, and then the harvest arrives?’ Behold, I say to you: Lift up your eyes and look at the countryside; for it is already ripe for the harvest.
The reaper is already receiving his payment and gathering crops for eternal life, so that the sower and reaper can rejoice together.36 For he who reaps, receives wages and gathers fruit unto eternal life, so that both he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together.
For here the saying is verified that 'One sows and another reaps.'37 For in this the word is true: that it is one who sows, and it is another who reaps.
I sent you to reap what you have not worked for; others have done the work, and you are sharing the fruits of their work."38 I have sent you to reap that for which you did not labor. Others have labored, and you have entered into their labors.”
Many of the Samaritans of that town began to believe in him because of the word of the woman who testified, "He told me everything I have done."39 Now many of the Samaritans from that city believed in him, because of the word of the woman who was offering testimony: “For he told me all the things that I have done.”
When the Samaritans came to him, they invited him to stay with them; and he stayed there two days.40 Therefore, when the Samaritans had come to him, they petitioned him to lodge there. And he lodged there for two days.
Many more began to believe in him because of his word,41 And many more believed in him, because of his own word.
and they said to the woman, "We no longer believe because of your word; for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is truly the savior of the world."42 And they said to the woman: “Now we believe, not because of your speech, but because we ourselves have heard him, and so we know that he is truly the Savior of the world.”
After the two days, he left there for Galilee.43 Then, after two days, he departed from there, and he traveled into Galilee.
For Jesus himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his native place.44 For Jesus himself offered testimony that a Prophet has no honor in his own country.
When he came into Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him, since they had seen all he had done in Jerusalem at the feast; for they themselves had gone to the feast.45 And so, when he had arrived in Galilee, the Galileans received him, because they had seen all that he had done at Jerusalem, in the day of the feast. For they also went to the feast day.
Then he returned to Cana in Galilee, where he had made the water wine. Now there was a royal official whose son was ill in Capernaum.46 Then he went again into Cana of Galilee, where he made water into wine. And there was a certain ruler, whose son was sick at Capernaum.
When he heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea, he went to him and asked him to come down and heal his son, who was near death.47 Since he had heard that Jesus came to Galilee from Judea, he sent to him and begged him to come down and heal his son. For he was beginning to die.
Jesus said to him, "Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will not believe."48 Therefore, Jesus said to him, “Unless you have seen signs and wonders, you do not believe.”
The royal official said to him, "Sir, come down before my child dies."49 The ruler said to him, “Lord, come down before my son dies.”
Jesus said to him, "You may go; your son will live." The man believed what Jesus said to him and left.50 Jesus said to him, “Go, your son lives.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and so he went away.
While he was on his way back, his slaves met him and told him that his boy would live.51 Then, as he was going down, his servants met him. And they reported to him, saying that his son was alive.
He asked them when he began to recover. They told him, "The fever left him yesterday, about one in the afternoon."52 Therefore, he asked them at which hour he had become better. And they said to him, “Yesterday, at the seventh hour, the fever left him.”
The father realized that just at that time Jesus had said to him, "Your son will live," and he and his whole household came to believe.53 Then the father realized that it was at the same hour that Jesus said to him, “Your son lives.” And both he and his entire household believed.
(Now) this was the second sign Jesus did when he came to Galilee from Judea.54 This next sign was the second that Jesus accomplished, after he had arrived in Galilee from Judea.
