1 My son, rob not the poor man of his livelihood; force not the eyes of the needy to turn away.	1 Figlio, non rifiutare al povero il necessario per la vita, non essere insensibile allo sguardo dei bisognosi.
2 A hungry man grieve not, a needy man anger not;	2 Non rattristare chi ha fame, non esasperare chi è in difficoltà.
3 Do not exasperate the downtrodden; delay not to give to the needy.	3 Non turbare un cuore già esasperato, non negare un dono al bisognoso.
4 A beggar in distress do not reject; avert not your face from the poor.	4 Non respingere la supplica del povero, non distogliere lo sguardo dall’indigente.
5 From the needy turn not your eyes, give no man reason to curse you;	5 Da chi ti chiede non distogliere lo sguardo, non dare a lui l’occasione di maledirti,
6 For if in the bitterness of his soul he curse you, his Creator will hear his prayer.	6 perché se egli ti maledice nell’amarezza del cuore, il suo creatore ne esaudirà la preghiera.
7 Endear yourself to the assembly; before a ruler bow your head.	7 Fatti amare dalla comunità e davanti a un grande abbassa il capo.
8 Give a hearing to the poor man, and return his greeting with courtesy;	8 Porgi il tuo orecchio al povero e rendigli un saluto di pace con mitezza.
9 Deliver the oppressed from the hand of the oppressor; let not justice be repugnant to you.	9 Strappa l’oppresso dal potere dell’oppressore e non essere meschino quando giudichi.
10 To the fatherless be as a father, and help their mother as a husband would; Thus will you be like a son to the Most High, and he will be more tender to you than a mother.	10 Sii come un padre per gli orfani, come un marito per la loro madre: sarai come un figlio dell’Altissimo, ed egli ti amerà più di tua madre.
11 Wisdom instructs her children and admonishes those who seek her.	11 La sapienza esalta i suoi figli e si prende cura di quanti la cercano.
12 He who loves her loves life; those who seek her out win her favor.	12 Chi ama la sapienza ama la vita, chi la cerca di buon mattino sarà ricolmo di gioia.
13 He who holds her fast inherits glory; wherever he dwells, the LORD bestows blessings.	13 Chi la possiede erediterà la gloria; dovunque vada, il Signore lo benedirà.
14 Those who serve her serve the Holy One; those who love her the LORD loves.	14 Chi la venera rende culto a Dio, che è il Santo, e il Signore ama coloro che la amano.
15 He who obeys her judges nations; he who hearkens to her dwells in her inmost chambers.	15 Chi l’ascolta giudicherà le nazioni, chi le presta attenzione vivrà tranquillo.
16 If one trusts her, he will possess her; his descendants too will inherit her.	16 Chi confida in lei l’avrà in eredità, i suoi discendenti ne conserveranno il possesso.
17 She walks with him as a stranger, and at first she puts him to the test; Fear and dread she brings upon him and tries him with her discipline; With her precepts she puts him to the proof, until his heart is fully with her.	17 Dapprima lo condurrà per vie tortuose, gli incuterà timore e paura, lo tormenterà con la sua disciplina, finché possa fidarsi di lui e lo abbia provato con i suoi decreti;
18 Then she comes back to bring him happiness and reveal her secrets to him.	18 ma poi lo ricondurrà su una via diritta e lo allieterà, gli manifesterà i propri segreti.
19 But if he fails her, she will abandon him and deliver him into the hands of despoilers.	19 Se invece egli batte una falsa strada, lo lascerà andare e lo consegnerà alla sua rovina.
20 Use your time well; guard yourself from evil, and bring upon yourself no shame.	20 Tieni conto del momento e guàrdati dal male, e non avere vergogna di te stesso.
21 There is a sense of shame laden with guilt, and a shame that merits honor and respect.	21 C’è una vergogna che porta al peccato e c’è una vergogna che porta gloria e grazia.
22 Show no favoritism to your own discredit; let no one intimidate you to your own downfall.	22 Non usare riguardi a tuo danno e non arrossire a tua rovina.
23 Refrain not from speaking at the proper time, and hide not away your wisdom;	23 Non astenerti dal parlare quando è necessario e non nascondere la tua sapienza per bellezza,
24 For it is through speech that wisdom becomes known, and knowledge through the tongue's rejoinder.	24 poiché dalla parola si riconosce la sapienza e l’istruzione dai detti della lingua.
25 Never gainsay the truth, and struggle not against the rushing stream.	25 Non contrastare la verità, ma arrossisci della tua ignoranza.
26 Be not ashamed to acknowledge your guilt, but of your ignorance rather be ashamed.	26 Non vergognarti di confessare i tuoi peccati e non opporti alla corrente di un fiume.
27 Do not abase yourself before an impious man, nor refuse to do so before rulers.	27 Non sottometterti a un uomo stolto, non essere parziale a favore di un potente.
28 Even to the death fight for truth, and the LORD your God will battle for you.	28 Lotta sino alla morte per la verità, il Signore Dio combatterà per te.
29 Be not surly in your speech, nor lazy and slack in your deeds.	29 Non essere arrogante nel tuo linguaggio, fiacco e indolente nelle opere.
30 Be not a lion at home, nor sly and suspicious at work.	30 Non essere come un leone nella tua casa e capriccioso con i tuoi servi.
31 Let not your hand be open to receive and clenched when it is time to give.	31 La tua mano non sia tesa per prendere e poi chiusa nel restituire.
