NEW AMERICAN BIBLEVULGATA
On his arrival in Jerusalem Rehoboam gathered together the house of Judah and Benjamin, a hundred and eighty thousand seasoned warriors, to have them fight against Israel and restore the kingdom to him.1 Venit autem Roboam in Jerusalem, et convocavit universam domum Juda et Benjamin, centum octoginta millia electorum atque bellantium, ut dimicaret contra Israël, et converteret ad se regnum suum.
However, the word of the LORD came to Shemaiah, a man of God:2 Factusque est sermo Domini ad Semeiam hominem Dei, dicens :
"Say to Rehoboam, son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all the Israelites in Judah and Benjamin:3 Loquere ad Roboam filium Salomonis regem Juda, et ad universum Israël, qui est in Juda et Benjamin :
'Thus says the LORD: You must not march out to fight against your brothers. Let every man return home, for what has occurred I have brought about.'" They obeyed this message of the LORD and gave up the expedition against Jeroboam.4 Hæc dicit Dominus : Non ascendetis, neque pugnabitis contra fratres vestros : revertatur unusquisque in domum suam, quia mea hoc gestum est voluntate. Qui cum audissent sermonem Domini, reversi sunt, nec perrexerunt contra Jeroboam.
Rehoboam took up residence in Jerusalem and built fortified cities in Judah.5 Habitavit autem Roboam in Jerusalem, et ædificavit civitates muratas in Juda.
He built up Bethlehem, Etam, Tekoa,6 Exstruxitque Bethlehem, et Etam, et Thecue,
Beth-zur, Soco, Adullam,7 Bethsur quoque, et Socho, et Odollam,
Gath, Mareshah, Ziph,8 necnon et Geth, et Maresa, et Ziph,
Adoraim, Lachish, Azekah,9 sed et Aduram, et Lachis, et Azeca,
Zorah, Aijalon, and Hebron; these were fortified cities in Judah and Benjamin.10 Saraa quoque, et Ajalon, et Hebron, quæ erant in Juda et Benjamin, civitates munitissimas.
Then he strengthened the fortifications and put commanders in them, with supplies of food, oil and wine.11 Cumque clausisset eas muris, posuit in eis principes, ciborumque horrea, hoc est, olei, et vini.
In every city were shields and spears, and he made them very strong. Thus Judah and Benjamin remained his.12 Sed et in singulis urbibus fecit armamentarium scutorum et hastarum, firmavitque eas summa diligentia, et imperavit super Judam et Benjamin.
Now the priests and Levites throughout Israel presented themselves to him from all parts of their land,13 Sacerdotes autem et Levitæ qui erant in universo Israël, venerunt ad eum de cunctis sedibus suis,
for the Levites left their assigned pasture lands and their holdings and came to Judah and Jerusalem, because Jeroboam and his sons repudiated them as priests of the LORD.14 relinquentes suburbana et possessiones suas, et transeuntes ad Judam et Jerusalem : eo quod abjecisset eos Jeroboam et posteri ejus, ne sacerdotio Domini fungerentur.
In their place, he himself appointed priests for the high places and satyrs and calves he had made.15 Qui constituit sibi sacerdotes excelsorum, et dæmoniorum, vitulorumque quos fecerat.
After them, all those of the Israelite tribes who firmly desired to seek the LORD, the God of Israel, came to Jerusalem to sacrifice to the LORD, the God of their fathers.16 Sed et de cunctis tribubus Israël, quicumque dederant cor suum ut quærerent Dominum Deum Israël, venerunt in Jerusalem ad immolandum victimas suas coram Domino Deo patrum suorum.
Thus they strengthened the kingdom of Judah and made Rehoboam, son of Solomon, prevail for three years; for they walked in the way of David and Solomon three years.17 Et roboraverunt regnum Juda, et confirmaverunt Roboam filium Salomonis per tres annos : ambulaverunt enim in viis David et Salomonis, annis tantum tribus.
Rehoboam took to himself as wife Mahalath, daughter of Jerimoth, son of David and of Abihail, daughter of Eliab, son of Jesse.18 Duxit autem Roboam uxorem Mahalath filiam Jerimoth filii David : Abihail quoque filiam Eliab filii Isai,
She bore him sons: Jehush, Shemariah and Zaham.19 quæ peperit ei filios Jehus, et Somoriam, et Zoom.
After her, he married Maacah, daughter of Absalom, who bore him Abijah, Attai, Ziza and Shelomith.20 Post hanc quoque accepit Maacha filiam Absalom, quæ peperit ei Abia, et Ethai, et Ziza, et Salomith.
Rehoboam loved Maacah, daughter of Absalom, more than all his other wives and concubines; he had taken eighteen wives and sixty concubines, and he fathered twenty-eight sons and sixty daughters.21 Amavit autem Roboam Maacha filiam Absalom super omnes uxores suas et concubinas : nam uxores decem et octo duxerat, concubinas autem sexaginta : et genuit viginti octo filios, et sexaginta filias.
Rehoboam constituted Abijah, son of Maacah, commander among his brothers, for he intended to make him king.22 Constituit vero in capite Abiam filium Maacha ducem super omnes fratres suos : ipsum enim regem facere cogitabat,
He acted prudently, distributing various of his sons throughout all the districts of Judah and Benjamin, in all the fortified cities; and he furnished them with copious provisions and sought an abundance of wives for them.23 quia sapientior fuit, et potentior super omnes filios ejus, et in cunctis finibus Juda et Benjamin, et in universis civitatibus muratis : præbuitque eis escas plurimas, et multas petivit uxores.
