παροιμιαι σαλωμωντος υιου δαυιδ ος εβασιλευσεν εν ισραηλ | 1 The parables of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel, |
γνωναι σοφιαν και παιδειαν νοησαι τε λογους φρονησεως | 2 in order to know wisdom and discipline, |
δεξασθαι τε στροφας λογων νοησαι τε δικαιοσυνην αληθη και κριμα κατευθυνειν | 3 to understand words of prudence, and to accept the instruction of doctrine, justice and judgment, and equity, |
ινα δω ακακοις πανουργιαν παιδι δε νεω αισθησιν τε και εννοιαν | 4 so as to give discernment to little ones, knowledge and understanding to adolescents. |
τωνδε γαρ ακουσας σοφος σοφωτερος εσται ο δε νοημων κυβερνησιν κτησεται | 5 By listening, the wise shall become wiser and the intelligent shall possess governments. |
νοησει τε παραβολην και σκοτεινον λογον ρησεις τε σοφων και αινιγματα | 6 He shall turn his soul to a parable and to its interpretation, to the words of the wise and their enigmas. |
αρχη σοφιας φοβος θεου συνεσις δε αγαθη πασι τοις ποιουσιν αυτην ευσεβεια δε εις θεον αρχη αισθησεως σοφιαν δε και παιδειαν ασεβεις εξουθενησουσιν | 7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. The foolish despise wisdom as well as doctrine. |
ακουε υιε παιδειαν πατρος σου και μη απωση θεσμους μητρος σου | 8 Listen, my son, to the discipline of your father, and forsake not the law of your mother, |
στεφανον γαρ χαριτων δεξη ση κορυφη και κλοιον χρυσεον περι σω τραχηλω | 9 so that grace may be added to your head and a collar to your neck. |
υιε μη σε πλανησωσιν ανδρες ασεβεις μηδε βουληθης εαν παρακαλεσωσι σε λεγοντες | 10 My son, if sinners should entice you, do not consent to them. |
ελθε μεθ' ημων κοινωνησον αιματος κρυψωμεν δε εις γην ανδρα δικαιον αδικως | 11 If they should say: “Come with us. We will lie in wait for blood. We will lay traps against the innocent, without cause. |
καταπιωμεν δε αυτον ωσπερ αδης ζωντα και αρωμεν αυτου την μνημην εκ γης | 12 Let us swallow him alive, like Hell, and whole, like one descending into the pit. |
την κτησιν αυτου την πολυτελη καταλαβωμεθα πλησωμεν δε οικους ημετερους σκυλων | 13 We will discover every precious substance. We will fill our houses with spoils. |
τον δε σον κληρον βαλε εν ημιν κοινον δε βαλλαντιον κτησωμεθα παντες και μαρσιππιον εν γενηθητω ημιν | 14 Cast your lot with us. One purse will be for us all.” |
μη πορευθης εν οδω μετ' αυτων εκκλινον δε τον ποδα σου εκ των τριβων αυτων | 15 My son, do not walk with them. Preclude your feet from their paths. |
οι γαρ ποδες αυτων εις κακιαν τρεχουσιν και ταχινοι του εκχεαι αιμα | 16 For their feet rush to evil, and they hurry to shed blood. |
ου γαρ αδικως εκτεινεται δικτυα πτερωτοις | 17 But a net is thrown in vain before the eyes of those who have wings. |
αυτοι γαρ οι φονου μετεχοντες θησαυριζουσιν εαυτοις κακα η δε καταστροφη ανδρων παρανομων κακη | 18 Likewise, they lie in ambush against their own blood, and they undertake deceits against their own souls. |
αυται αι οδοι εισιν παντων των συντελουντων τα ανομα τη γαρ ασεβεια την εαυτων ψυχην αφαιρουνται | 19 Thus, the ways of all those who are greedy seize the souls of those who possess. |
σοφια εν εξοδοις υμνειται εν δε πλατειαις παρρησιαν αγει | 20 Wisdom forewarns far and wide; she bestows her voice in the streets. |
επ' ακρων δε τειχεων κηρυσσεται επι δε πυλαις δυναστων παρεδρευει επι δε πυλαις πολεως θαρρουσα λεγει | 21 She cries out at the head of crowds; at the entrance of the gates of the city, she offers her words, saying: |
οσον αν χρονον ακακοι εχωνται της δικαιοσυνης ουκ αισχυνθησονται οι δε αφρονες της υβρεως οντες επιθυμηται ασεβεις γενομενοι εμισησαν αισθησιν | 22 “Little ones, how long will you choose to be childish, and how long will the foolish desire what is harmful to themselves, and how long will the imprudent hate knowledge? |
και υπευθυνοι εγενοντο ελεγχοις ιδου προησομαι υμιν εμης πνοης ρησιν διδαξω δε υμας τον εμον λογον | 23 Be converted by my correction. Lo, I will offer my spirit to you, and I will reveal my words to you. |
επειδη εκαλουν και ουχ υπηκουσατε και εξετεινον λογους και ου προσειχετε | 24 For I called, and you refused. I extended my hand, and there was no one who watched. |
αλλα ακυρους εποιειτε εμας βουλας τοις δε εμοις ελεγχοις ηπειθησατε | 25 You have despised all my counsels, and you have neglected my rebukes. |
τοιγαρουν καγω τη υμετερα απωλεια επιγελασομαι καταχαρουμαι δε ηνικα αν ερχηται υμιν ολεθρος | 26 Similarly, I will ridicule you at your demise, and I will mock you, when that which you feared shall overcome you. |
και ως αν αφικηται υμιν αφνω θορυβος η δε καταστροφη ομοιως καταιγιδι παρη και οταν ερχηται υμιν θλιψις και πολιορκια η οταν ερχηται υμιν ολεθρος | 27 When sudden calamity rushes upon you, and your demise advances like a tempest, when tribulation and anguish overcome you, |
εσται γαρ οταν επικαλεσησθε με εγω δε ουκ εισακουσομαι υμων ζητησουσιν με κακοι και ουχ ευρησουσιν | 28 then they will call to me, and I will not heed, they will arise in the morning, and not find me. |
εμισησαν γαρ σοφιαν τον δε φοβον του κυριου ου προειλαντο | 29 For they held hatred for discipline, and they would not accept the fear of the Lord; |
ουδε ηθελον εμαις προσεχειν βουλαις εμυκτηριζον δε εμους ελεγχους | 30 they would not consent to my counsel, but they detracted from all of my corrections. |
τοιγαρουν εδονται της εαυτων οδου τους καρπους και της εαυτων ασεβειας πλησθησονται | 31 Therefore, they shall eat the fruit of their way, and they shall have their fill of their own counsels. |
ανθ' ων γαρ ηδικουν νηπιους φονευθησονται και εξετασμος ασεβεις ολει | 32 The loathing of the little ones shall destroy them, and the prosperity of the foolish shall perish them. |
ο δε εμου ακουων κατασκηνωσει επ' ελπιδι και ησυχασει αφοβως απο παντος κακου | 33 But whoever will listen to me shall rest without terror, and shall have full enjoyment of abundance, without fear of evils.” |
