Proverbs 11

DOUAI-RHEIMSRevised Standard Version Catholic Edition
A deceitful balance is an abomination before the Lord: and a just weight is his will.1 A false balance is an abomination to the LORD, but a just weight is his delight.
Where pride is, there also shall be reproach: but where humility is, there also is wisdom.2 When pride comes, then comes disgrace; but with the humble is wisdom.
The simplicity of the just shall guide them: and the deceitfulness of the wicked shall destroy them.3 The integrity of the upright guides them, but the crookedness of the treacherous destroys them.
Riches shall not profit in the day of revenge: but justice shall deliver from death.4 Riches do not profit in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death.
The justice of the upright shall make his way prosperous: and the wicked man shall fall by his own wickedness.5 The righteousness of the blameless keeps his way straight, but the wicked falls by his own wickedness.
The justice of the righteous shall deliver them: and the unjust shall be caught in their own snares.6 The righteousness of the upright delivers them, but the treacherous are taken captive by their lust.
When the wicked man is dead, there shall be no hope any more: and the expectation of the solicitous shall perish.7 When the wicked dies, his hope perishes, and the expectation of the godless comes to nought.
The just is delivered out of distress: and the wicked shall be given up for him.8 The righteous is delivered from trouble, and the wicked gets into it instead.
The dissembler with his mouth deceiveth his friend: but the just shall be delivered by knowledge.9 With his mouth the godless man would destroy his neighbor, but by knowledge the righteous are delivered.
When it goeth well with the just the city shall rejoice: and when the wicked perish there shall be praise.10 When it goes well with the righteous, the city rejoices; and when the wicked perish there are shouts of gladness.
By the blessing of the just the city shall be exalted: and by the mouth of the wicked it shall be overthrown.11 By the blessing of the upright a city is exalted, but it is overthrown by the mouth of the wicked.
He that despiseth his friend, is mean of heart: but the wise man will hold his peace.12 He who belittles his neighbor lacks sense, but a man of understanding remains silent.
He that walketh deceitfully, revealeth secrets: but he that is faithful, concealeth the thing committed to him by his friend.13 He who goes about as a talebearer reveals secrets, but he who is trustworthy in spirit keeps a thing hidden.
Where there is no governor, the people shall fall: but there is safety where there is much counsel.14 Where there is no guidance, a people falls; but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.
He shall be afflicted with evil, that is surety for a stranger: but he that is aware of the snares, shall be secure.15 He who gives surety for a stranger will smart for it, but he who hates suretyship is secure.
A gracious woman shall find glory: and the strong shall have riches.16 A gracious woman gets honor, and violent men get riches.
A merciful man doth good to his own soul: but he that is cruel casteth off even his own kindred.17 A man who is kind benefits himself, but a cruel man hurts himself.
The wicked maketh an unsteady work: but to him that soweth justice, there is a faithful reward.18 A wicked man earns deceptive wages, but one who sows righteousness gets a sure reward.
Clemency prepareth life: and the pursuing of evil things, death.19 He who is steadfast in righteousness will live, but he who pursues evil will die.
A perverse heart is abominable to the Lord: and his will is in them that walk sincerely.20 Men of perverse mind are an abomination to the LORD, but those of blameless ways are his delight.
Hand in hand the evil man shall not be innocent: but the seed of the just shall be saved.21 Be assured, an evil man will not go unpunished, but those who are righteous will be delivered.
A golden ring in a swine's snout, a woman fair and foolish.22 Like a gold ring in a swine's snout is a beautiful woman without discretion.
The desire of the just is all good: the expectation of the wicked is indignation.23 The desire of the righteous ends only in good; the expectation of the wicked in wrath.
Some distribute their own goods, and grow richer: others take away what is not their own, and are always in want.24 One man gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want.
The soul which blesseth, shall be made fat: and he that inebriateth, shall be inebriated also himself.25 A liberal man will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered.
He that hideth up corn, shall be cursed among the people: but a blessing upon the head of them that sell.26 The people curse him who holds back grain, but a blessing is on the head of him who sells it.
Well doth he rise early who seeketh good things; but he that seeketh after evil things shall be oppressed by them.27 He who diligently seeks good seeks favor, but evil comes to him who searches for it.
He that trusteth in his riches shall fall: but the just shall spring up as a green leaf.28 He who trusts in his riches will wither, but the righteous will flourish like a green leaf.
He that troubleth his own house, shall inherit the winds: and the fool shall serve the wise.29 He who troubles his household will inherit wind, and the fool will be servant to the wise.
The fruit of the just man is a tree of life: and he that gaineth souls, is wise.30 The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, but lawlessness takes away lives.
If the just man receive in the earth, how much more the wicked and the sinner.31 If the righteous is requited on earth, how much more the wicked and the sinner!
