DOUAI-RHEIMS	SAGRADA BIBLIA
1 I made a covenant with my eyes, that I would not so much as think upon a virgin.	1 Eu havia feito um pacto com meus olhos: não desejaria olhar nunca para uma virgem.
2 For what part should God from above have in me, and what inheritance the Almighty from on high?	2 Que parte me daria Deus lá do alto, que sorte o Todo-poderoso me enviaria dos céus?
3 Is not destruction to the wicked, and aversion to them that work iniquity?	3 A infelicidade não está reservada ao injusto, e o infortúnio ao iníquo?
4 Doth not he consider my ways, and number all my steps?	4 Não conhece Deus os meus caminhos, e não conta todos os meus passos?
5 If I have walked in vanity, and my foot hath made haste to deceit:	5 Se caminhei com a mentira, se meu pé correu atrás da fraude,
6 Let him weigh me in a just balance, and let God know my simplicity.	6 que Deus me pese em justas balanças e reconhecerá minha integridade.
7 If my step hath turned out of the way, and if my heart hath followed my eyes, and if a spot hath cleaved to my hands:	7 Se meus passos se desviaram do caminho, se meu coração seguiu meus olhos, se às minhas mãos se apegou qualquer mácula,
8 Then let me sow and let another eat: and let my offspring be rooted out.	8 semeie eu e outro o coma, e que minhas plantações sejam desenraizadas!
9 If my heart hath been deceived upon a woman, and if I have laid wait at my friend's door:	9 Se meu coração foi seduzido por uma mulher, se fiquei à espreita à porta de meu vizinho,
10 Let my wife be the harlot of another, and let other men lie with her.	10 que minha mulher gire a mó para outro e que estranhos a possuam!
11 For this is a heinous crime, and a most grievous iniquity.	11 Pois isso teria sido um crime, um delito dependente da justiça,
12 It is a fire that devoureth even to destruction, and rooteth up all things that spring.	12 um fogo que devoraria até o abismo, e que teria arruinado todos os meus bens.
13 If I have despised to abide judgment with my manservant, or my maidservant, when they had any controversy against me:	13 Nunca violei o direito de meus escravos, ou de minha serva, em suas discussões comigo.
14 For what shall I do when God shall rise to judge? and when he shall examine, what shall I answer him?	14 Que farei eu quando Deus se levantar? Quando me interrogar, que lhe responderei?
15 Did not he that made me in the womb make him also: and did not one and the same form me in the womb?	15 Aquele que me criou no ventre, não o criou também a ele? Um mesmo criador não nos formou no seio da nossa mãe?
16 If I have denied to the poor what they desired, and have made the eyes of the widow wait:	16 Não recusei aos pobres aquilo que desejavam, não fiz desfalecer os olhos da viúva,
17 If I have eaten my morsel alone, and the fatherless hath not eaten thereof:	17 não comi sozinho meu pedaço de pão, sem que o órfão tivesse a sua parte;
18 (For from my infancy mercy grew up with me: and it came out with me from my mother's womb :)	18 desde minha infância cuidei deste como um pai, desde o ventre de minha mãe fui o guia da viúva.
19 If I have despised him that was perishing for want of clothing, and the poor man that had no covering:	19 Se vi perecer um homem por falta de roupas, e o pobre que não tinha com que cobrir-se,
20 If his sides have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep:	20 sem que seus rins me tenham abençoado, aquecido como estava com a lã de minhas ovelhas;
21 If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, even when I saw myself superior in the gate:	21 se levantei a mão contra o órfão, quando me via apoiado pelos juízes,
22 Let my shoulder fall from its joint, and let my arm with its bones be broken.	22 que meu ombro caia de minhas costas, que meu braço seja arrancado de seu cotovelo!
23 For I have always feared God as waves swelling over me, and his weight I was not able to bear.	23 Pois o temor de Deus me invadiu, e diante de sua majestade não posso subsistir.
24 If I have thought gold my strength, and have said to fine gold: My confidence:	24 Nunca pus no ouro minha segurança, nem jamais disse ao ouro puro: És minha esperança.
25 If I have rejoiced over my great riches, and because my hand had gotten much.	25 Nunca me rejubilei por ser grande a minha riqueza, nem pelo fato de minha mão ter ajuntado muito.
26 If I beheld the sun when it shined, and the moon going in brightness:	26 Quando eu via o sol brilhar, e a lua levantar-se em seu esplendor,
27 And my heart in secret hath rejoiced, and I have kissed my hand with my mouth:	27 jamais meu coração deixou-se seduzir em segredo, e minha mão não foi levada à boca para um beijo.
28 Which is a very great iniquity, and a denial against the most high God.	28 Isto seria um crime digno de castigo, pois eu teria renegado o Deus do alto.
29 If I have been glad at the downfall of him that hated me, and have rejoiced that evil had found him.	29 Nunca me alegrei com a ruína de meu inimigo, e nem exultei quando a infelicidade o feriu.
30 For I have not given my mouth to sin, by wishing a curse to his soul.	30 Não permiti que minha língua pecasse, reclamando sua morte por uma imprecação.
31 If the men of my tabernacle have not said: Who will give us of his flesh that we may be filled?	31 Jamais as pessoas de minha tenda me disseram: Há alguém que não saiu satisfeito.
32 The stranger did not stay without, my door was open to the traveller.	32 O estrangeiro não passava a noite fora, eu abria a minha porta ao viajante.
33 If as a man I have hid my sin, and have concealed my iniquity in my bosom.	33 Nunca dissimulei minha culpa aos homens, escondendo em meu peito minha iniqüidade,
34 If I have been afraid at a very great multitude, and the contempt of kinsmen hath terrified me: and I have not rather held my peace, and not gone out of the door.	34 como se temesse a multidão e receasse o desprezo das famílias, a ponto de me manter quieto sem pôr o pé fora da porta.
35 Who would grant me a hearer, that the Almighty may hear my desire; and that he himself that judgeth would write a book,	35 Oh, se eu tivesse alguém para me ouvir! Eis a minha assinatura: que o Todo-poderoso me responda! Que o meu adversário escreva também um memorial.
36 That I may carry it on my shoulder, and put it about me as a crown?	36 Será que eu não o poria sobre meus ombros, e não cingiria minha fronte com ele como de uma coroa?
37 At every step of mine I would pronounce it, and offer it as to a prince.	37 Dar-lhe-ia conta de todos os meus passos, e me apresentaria diante dele altivo como um príncipe.
38 If my land cry against me, and with it the furrows thereof mourn:	38 Se minha terra clamou contra mim, e seus sulcos derramaram lágrimas,
39 If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, and have afflicted the soul of the tillers thereof:	39 se comi seus frutos sem pagar, se afligi a alma de seu possuidor,
40 Let thistles grow up to me instead of wheat, and thorns instead of barley.	40 que em vez de trigo produza espinhos, e joio em vez de cevada! Aqui terminam os discursos de Jó.
