1 Giuda venne a conoscere la fama dei Romani: che essi erano molto potenti e favorivano tutti quelli che simpatizzavano per loro e accordavano amicizia a quanti si rivolgevano a loro e che erano forti e potenti.	1 Now Judas heard of the fame of the Romans, that they were very strong and were well-disposed toward all who made an alliance with them, that they pledged friendship to those who came to them,
2 Gli furono narrate le loro guerre e le loro imprese gloriose compiute tra i Galli e come li avessero vinti e resi tributari;	2 and that they were very strong. Men told him of their wars and of the brave deeds which they were doing among the Gauls, how they had defeated them and forced them to pay tribute,
3 quanto avevano compiuto nella Spagna per impadronirsi delle miniere d’oro e d’argento che vi sono,	3 and what they had done in the land of Spain to get control of the silver and gold mines there,
4 e come avevano sottomesso tutta la regione con la loro saggezza e costanza, benché il paese fosse assai lontano da loro. Avevano vinto i re che erano venuti contro di loro dall’estremità della terra: li avevano sconfitti e avevano inflitto loro gravi colpi, mentre gli altri pagavano loro il tributo ogni anno.	4 and how they had gained control of the whole region by their planning and patience, even though the place was far distant from them. They also subdued the kings who came against them from the ends of the earth, until they crushed them and inflicted great disaster upon them; the rest paid them tribute every year.
5 Avevano poi sconfitto in guerra e sottomesso Filippo e Perseo, re dei Chittìm, e quanti si erano sollevati contro di loro.	5 Philip, and Perseus king of the Macedonians, * and the others who rose up against them, they crushed in battle and conquered.
6 Antioco, il grande re dell’Asia, era sceso in guerra contro di loro con centoventi elefanti, cavalleria, carri e un esercito immenso, ma era stato sconfitto da loro,	6 They also defeated Antiochus the Great, king of Asia, who went to fight against them with a hundred and twenty elephants and with cavalry and chariots and a very large army. He was crushed by them;
7 lo avevano preso vivo e gli avevano imposto di pagare, lui e i suoi successori, un tributo ingente, di dare ostaggi e cedere	7 they took him alive and decreed that he and those who should reign after him should pay a heavy tribute and give hostages and surrender some of their best provinces,
8 la regione dell’India, la Media, la Lidia, tra le migliori loro province; ed essi, dopo averle tolte a lui, le avevano consegnate al re Eumene.	8 the country of India and Media and Lydia. These they took from him and gave to Eumenes the king.
9 I Greci avevano deciso di affrontarli e distruggerli,	9 The Greeks planned to come and destroy them,
10 ma la cosa era stata da loro risaputa, e avevano mandato contro di loro un solo generale, erano venuti a battaglia con loro e molti caddero uccisi; avevano condotto in schiavitù le loro mogli e i loro figli e avevano saccheggiato i loro beni, avevano conquistato il paese, avevano abbattuto le loro fortezze e li avevano resi soggetti fino ad oggi.	10 but this became known to them, and they sent a general against the Greeks * and attacked them. Many of them were wounded and fell, and the Romans * took captive their wives and children; they plundered them, conquered the land, tore down their strongholds, and enslaved them to this day.
11 Avevano distrutto e soggiogato gli altri regni e le isole e quanti per avventura si erano opposti a loro. Con i loro amici invece e con quanti si appoggiavano a loro avevano mantenuto amicizia.	11 The remaining kingdoms and islands, as many as ever opposed them, they destroyed and enslaved;
12 Avevano assoggettato i re vicini e quelli lontani, e quanti sentivano il loro nome ne avevano timore.	12 but with their friends and those who rely on them they have kept friendship. They have subdued kings far and near, and as many as have heard of their fame have feared them.
13 Quelli che essi vogliono aiutare e far regnare, regnano; quelli che essi vogliono, li depongono, tanto si sono levati in alto.	13 Those whom they wish to help and to make kings, they make kings, and those whom they wish they depose; and they have been greatly exalted.
14 Con tutti questi successi nessuno di loro si è imposto il diadema né si è rivestito di porpora per fregiarsene.	14 Yet for all this not one of them has put on a crown or worn purple as a mark of pride,
15 Essi hanno costituito un consiglio e ogni giorno trecentoventi consiglieri si consultano continuamente riguardo al popolo, perché sia ben governato.	15 but they have built for themselves a senate chamber, and every day three hundred and twenty senators constantly deliberate concerning the people, to govern them well.
16 Affidano il comando e il governo di tutti i loro domìni a uno di loro per un anno e tutti obbediscono a quello solo e non c’è in loro invidia né gelosia.	16 They trust one man each year to rule over them and to control all their land; they all heed the one man, and there is no envy or jealousy among them.
17 Giuda pertanto scelse Eupòlemo, figlio di Giovanni, figlio di Acco, e Giasone, figlio di Eleàzaro, e li inviò a Roma a stringere amicizia e alleanza,	17 So Judas chose Eupolemus the son of John, son of Accos, and Jason the son of Eleazar, and sent them to Rome to establish friendship and alliance,
18 per liberarsi dal giogo, perché vedevano che il regno dei Greci riduceva Israele in schiavitù.	18 and to free themselves from the yoke; for they saw that the kingdom of the Greeks was completely enslaving Israel.
19 Andarono fino a Roma con viaggio lunghissimo, entrarono nel Senato e incominciarono a dire:	19 They went to Rome, a very long journey; and they entered the senate chamber and spoke as follows:
20 «Giuda, chiamato anche Maccabeo, e i suoi fratelli e il popolo dei Giudei ci hanno inviati a voi, per concludere con voi alleanza e pace e per essere iscritti tra i vostri alleati e amici».	20 "Judas, who is also called Maccabeus, and his brothers and the people of the Jews have sent us to you to establish alliance and peace with you, that we may be enrolled as your allies and friends."
21 Piacque loro la proposta.	21 The proposal pleased them,
22 Questa è la copia della lettera che trascrissero su tavolette di bronzo e inviarono a Gerusalemme, perché vi rimanesse come documento di pace e alleanza per i Giudei:	22 and this is a copy of the letter which they wrote in reply, on bronze tablets, and sent to Jerusalem to remain with them there as a memorial of peace and alliance:
23 «Ai Romani e alla nazione dei Giudei, prosperità per mare e per terra, sempre! Lontano da loro la spada nemica!	23 "May all go well with the Romans and with the nation of the Jews at sea and on land for ever, and may sword and enemy be far from them.
24 Se verrà mossa guerra, contro Roma anzitutto, o contro uno qualsiasi dei suoi alleati in tutto il suo dominio,	24 If war comes first to Rome or to any of their allies in all their dominion,
25 la nazione dei Giudei combatterà al loro fianco con piena lealtà, come permetteranno loro le circostanze;	25 the nation of the Jews shall act as their allies wholeheartedly, as the occasion may indicate to them.
26 ai nemici non forniranno né procureranno grano, armi, denaro, navi, secondo quanto ha stabilito Roma, e osserveranno i loro impegni senza compenso.	26 And to the enemy who makes war they shall not give or supply grain, arms, money, or ships, as Rome has decided; and they shall keep their obligations without receiving any return.
27 Allo stesso modo, se capiterà prima una guerra alla nazione dei Giudei, combatteranno con loro i Romani con tutto l’animo, come permetteranno loro le circostanze;	27 In the same way, if war comes first to the nation of the Jews, the Romans shall willingly act as their allies, as the occasion may indicate to them.
28 ai nemici non forniranno grano, armi, denaro, navi, secondo quanto ha stabilito Roma, e osserveranno questi impegni senza inganno.	28 And to the enemy allies shall be given no grain, arms, money, or ships, as Rome has decided; and they shall keep these obligations and do so without deceit.
29 In questi termini i Romani hanno stabilito un’alleanza con il popolo dei Giudei.	29 Thus on these terms the Romans make a treaty with the Jewish people.
30 Se dopo queste decisioni vorranno gli uni o gli altri aggiungere o togliere qualche cosa, lo faranno di comune accordo e quanto avranno aggiunto o tolto sarà vincolante.	30 If after these terms are in effect both parties shall determine to add or delete anything, they shall do so at their discretion, and any addition or deletion that they may make shall be valid.
31 Riguardo poi ai mali che il re Demetrio compie ai loro danni, gli abbiamo scritto: “Perché aggravi il giogo sui Giudei, nostri amici e alleati?	31 "And concerning the wrongs which King Demetrius is doing to them we have written to him as follows, 'Why have you made your yoke heavy upon our friends and allies the Jews?
32 Se dunque si appelleranno contro di te, difenderemo i loro diritti e ti faremo guerra per mare e per terra”».	32 If now they appeal again for help against you, we will defend their rights and fight you on sea and on land.'"
