Job 38

EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS	NEW JERUSALEM
1 El Señor respondió a Job desde la tempestad, diciendo:	1 Then from the heart of the tempest Yahweh gave Job his answer. He said:
2 ¿Quién es ese que oscurece mi designio con palabras desprovistas de sentido?	2 Who is this, obscuring my intentions with his ignorant words?
3 ¡Ajústate el cinturón como un guerrero: yo te preguntaré, y tú me instruirás!	3 Brace yourself like a fighter; I am going to ask the questions, and you are to inform me!
4 ¿Dónde estabas cuando yo fundaba la tierra? Indícalo, si eres capaz de entender.	4 Where were you when I laid the earth's foundations? Tel me, since you are so wel -informed!
5 Quién fijó sus medidas? ¿Lo sabes acaso? ¿Quién tendió sobre ella la cuerda para medir?	5 Who decided its dimensions, do you know? Or who stretched the measuring line across it?
6 ¿Sobre qué fueron hundidos sus pilares o quién asentó su piedra angular,	6 What supports its pil ars at their bases? Who laid its cornerstone
7 mientras los astros de la mañana cantaban a coro y aclamaban todos los hijos de Dios?	7 to the joyful concert of the morning stars and unanimous acclaim of the sons of God?
8 ¿Quién encerró con dos puertas al mar, cuando él salía a borbotones del seno materno,	8 Who pent up the sea behind closed doors when it leapt tumultuous from the womb,
9 cuando le puse una nube por vestido y por pañales, densos nubarrones?	9 when I wrapped it in a robe of mist and made black clouds its swaddling bands;
10 Yo tracé un límite alrededor de él, le puse cerrojos y puertas,	10 when I cut out the place I had decreed for it and imposed gates and a bolt?
11 y le dije: «Llegarás hasta aquí y no pasarás; aquí se quebrará la soberbia de tus olas».	11 'Come so far,' I said, 'and no further; here your proud waves must break!'
12 ¿Has mandado una vez en tu vida a la mañana, le has indicado su puesto a la aurora,	12 Have you ever in your life given orders to the morning or sent the dawn to its post,
13 para que tome a la tierra por los bordes y sean sacudidos de ella los malvados?	13 to grasp the earth by its edges and shake the wicked out of it?
14 Ella adquiere forma como la arcilla bajo el sello y se tiñe lo mismo que un vestido:	14 She turns it as red as a clay seal, she tints it as though it were a dress,
15 entonces, a los malvados se los priva de su luz y se quiebra el brazo que se alzaba.	15 stealing the light from evil-doers and breaking the arm raised to strike.
16 ¿Has penetrado hasta las fuentes del mar y has caminado por el fondo del océano?	16 Have you been right down to the sources of the sea and walked about at the bottom of the Abyss?
17 ¿Se te han abierto las Puertas de la Muerte y has visto las Puertas de la Sombra?	17 Have you been shown the gates of Death, have you seen the janitors of the Shadow dark as death?
18 ¿Abarcas con tu inteligencia la extensión de la tierra? Indícalo, si es que sabes todo esto.	18 Have you an inkling of the extent of the earth? Tell me al about it if you have!
19 ¿Por dónde se va adonde habita la luz y dónde está la morada de las tinieblas,	19 Which is the way to the home of the Light, and where does darkness live? -
20 para que puedas guiarla hasta su dominio y mostrarle el camino de su casa?	20 You could then show them the way to their proper places, you could put them on the path homeagain!

24 ¿Por qué camino se expande la luz y el viento del este se propaga sobre la tierra?	24 From which direction does the lightning fork, where in the world does the east wind blow itself out?
25 ¿Quién ha abierto un cauce al aguacero y un camino al estampido de los truenos,	25 Who bores a channel for the downpour or clears the way for the rol ing thunder
26 para hacer llover sobre una tierra despoblada, sobre un desierto donde ningún hombre habita,	26 so that rain may fal on lands where no one lives, and the deserts void of human dwel ing,
27 para regar los páramos desolados y hacer brotar una hierba en la estepa?	27 to meet the needs of the lonely wastes and make grass sprout on the thirsty ground?
28 ¿Acaso la lluvia tiene un padre, y quién ha engendrado las gotas del rocío?	28 Has the rain a father? Who begets the dewdrops?
29 ¿Del vientre de quién sale el hielo y quién da a luz la escarcha del cielo,	29 What womb brings forth the ice, who gives birth to the frost of heaven,
30 cuando las aguas se endurecen como piedra y se congela la superficie del océano?	30 when the waters grow hard as stone and the surface of the deep congeals?
31 ¿Anudas tú los lazos de las Pléyades o desatas las cuerdas del Orión?	31 Can you fasten the harness of the Pleiades, or untie Orion's bands?
32 ¿Haces salir las Híadas a su tiempo y guías a la Osa y sus cachorros?	32 Can you guide the Crown season by season and show the Bear and its cubs which way to go?
33 ¿Conoces las leyes de los cielos? ¿Regulas su dominio sobre la tierra?	33 Have you grasped the celestial laws? Could you make their writ run on the earth?
34 ¿Puedes alzar tu voz hasta las nubes para que te cubra una masa de agua?	34 Can your voice carry as far as the clouds and make the pent-up waters do your bidding?
35 ¿Parten los relámpagos cuanto tú los envías y ellos te dicen: «Aquí estamos»?	35 Will lightning flashes come at your command and answer, 'Here we are'?
36 ¿Quién puso en el ibis la sabiduría o quién dio al gallo la inteligencia?	36 Who endowed the ibis with wisdom and gave the cock his intel igence?
37 ¿Quién cuenta las nubes sabiamente y quién inclina los odres del cielo,	37 Whose skil details every cloud and tilts the water-skins of heaven
38 cuando el polvo se funde en una masa y los terrones se pegan entre sí?	38 until the dust solidifies and the cracks in the ground close up?
39 ¿Cazas tú la presa para la leona y aplacas el hambre de sus cachorros,	39 Do you go hunting prey for the lioness; do you satisfy the hunger of young lions
40 cuando se agazapan en sus guaridas y están al acecho en la espesura?	40 where they crouch in their den, waiting eagerly in the bushes?
41 ¿Quién prepara las provisiones para el cuervo, cuando sus pichones claman a Dios y andan errantes por falta de alimento?	41 Who makes provision for the raven when his little ones cry out to God craning their necks in search offood?
