1 J’avais imposé une règle à mes yeux, que jamais ils ne s’arrêtent sur une vierge.	1 I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid?
2 Car, que nous enverra Dieu, de ses hauteurs, quel est le sort que nous prépare là-haut le Puissant?	2 For what portion of God is there from above? and what inheritance of the Almighty from on high?
3 N’est-ce pas le malheur pour le méchant, les épreuves pour les malfaisants?	3 Is not destruction to the wicked? and a strange punishment to the workers of iniquity?
4 N’a-t-il donc pas vu ma conduite? N’a-t-il pas noté toutes mes démarches?	4 Doth not he see my ways, and count all my steps?
5 Ai-je vécu dans le mensonge, me suis-je affairé pour tromper les autres?	5 If I have walked with vanity, or if my foot hath hasted to deceit;
6 Qu’il me pèse sur la balance de la justice! Dieu, saura que je suis sans reproches.	6 Let me be weighed in an even balance, that God may know mine integrity.
7 Mes pas ont-ils dévié du droit chemin, me suis-je laissé mener par mes désirs, ai-je trempé dans des affaires sales?	7 If my step hath turned out of the way, and mine heart walked after mine eyes, and if any blot hath cleaved to mine hands;
8 Alors, qu’un autre dévore ce que j’ai semé, que soient déracinés mes rejetons!	8 Then let me sow, and let another eat; yea, let my offspring be rooted out.
9 Me suis-je égaré pour une femme, ai-je fait le guet à la porte de mon prochain?	9 If mine heart have been deceived by a woman, or if I have laid wait at my neighbour's door;
10 Que ma femme, alors, tourne la meule pour d’autres, et qu’un autre couche avec elle!	10 Then let my wife grind unto another, and let others bow down upon her.
11 (Car c’est une chose honteuse, un crime détestable.)	11 For this is an heinous crime; yea, it is an iniquity to be punished by the judges.
12 Car j’aurais allumé le feu qui dévore, qui consumerait mes biens jusqu’à ma perte.	12 For it is a fire that consumeth to destruction, and would root out all mine increase.
13 Ai-je méprisé les droits de mon serviteur ou de ma servante en conflit avec moi?	13 If I did despise the cause of my manservant or of my maidservant, when they contended with me;
14 Que ferais-je alors au tribunal de Dieu, que lui répondrais-je quand il m’interrogera?	14 What then shall I do when God riseth up? and when he visiteth, what shall I answer him?
15 Il m’a pétri dans le sein de ma mère, eux de même, un seul Dieu nous a tous formés dans le ventre.	15 Did not he that made me in the womb make him? and did not one fashion us in the womb?
16 31:38 Si ma terre a crié vengeance contre moi, et qu’avec elle mes sillons ont pleuré,	16 If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail;
17 31:39 parce que j’en mangeais sans avoir rien payé, et suçais jusqu’au sang de ses travailleurs,	17 Or have eaten my morsel myself alone, and the fatherless hath not eaten thereof;
18 31:40 qu’ils donnent désormais, non du blé mais des ronces, et de la mauvaise herbe à la place de l’orge!	18 (For from my youth he was brought up with me, as with a father, and I have guided her from my mother's womb;)
19 31:16 Ai-je refusé aux pauvres ce qu’ils désiraient, ai-je laissé la veuve attendre en vain?	19 If I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or any poor without covering;
20 31:17 Ai-je mangé mon pain tout seul, sans que l’orphelin en ait sa part?	20 If his loins have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep;
21 31:18 Tout jeune encore je me faisais son père, dès ma plus tendre enfance j’assistais la veuve.	21 If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, when I saw my help in the gate:
22 31:19 À peine voyais-je un pauvre à demi nu, un miséreux sans rien pour se couvrir,	22 Then let mine arm fall from my shoulder blade, and mine arm be broken from the bone.
23 31:20 qu’il se réchauffait sous la laine de mes bêtes, et de tout son corps il me bénissait.	23 For destruction from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his highness I could not endure.
24 31:21 Si j’ai fait un jour violence à l’orphelin, fort de mes appuis auprès des notables,	24 If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence;
25 31:22 que mon épaule alors se détache du tronc, que mon bras se brise au coude!	25 If I rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because mine hand had gotten much;
26 31:23 Car je redoute les punitions de Dieu, et je ne pourrais rien face à sa majesté.	26 If I beheld the sun when it shined, or the moon walking in brightness;
27 31:24 Ai-je mis ma confiance dans l’or, ai-je dit: “Avec toi, mon ami, je suis tranquille”?	27 And my heart hath been secretly enticed, or my mouth hath kissed my hand:
28 31:25 Était-ce mon orgueil d’avoir tant de richesses et de m’être monté une telle fortune?	28 This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judge: for I should have denied the God that is above.
29 31:26 Quand je voyais le soleil en son éclat, la marche de la lune radieuse au firmament,	29 If I rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me, or lifted up myself when evil found him:
30 31:27 me suis-je secrètement laissé séduire? ai-je baisé ma main comme on fait pour un dieu?	30 Neither have I suffered my mouth to sin by wishing a curse to his soul.
31 31:28 Cela encore serait un crime détestable, car j’aurais renié le Dieu Très-Haut.	31 If the men of my tabernacle said not, Oh that we had of his flesh! we cannot be satisfied.
32 31:29 Me suis-je réjoui du malheur de mon ennemi, ai-je dansé de joie quand l’épreuve le frappait?	32 The stranger did not lodge in the street: but I opened my doors to the traveller.
33 31:30 Non, je n’ai pas permis que ma bouche faute en lui souhaitant la mort!	33 If I covered my transgressions as Adam, by hiding mine iniquity in my bosom:
34 31:31 Tous disaient dans ma tente: “À qui n’a-t-il pas donné, largement, sa viande?”	34 Did I fear a great multitude, or did the contempt of families terrify me, that I kept silence, and went not out of the door?
35 31:32 L’étranger ne passait pas la nuit dehors, car j’ouvrais mes portes au voyageur.	35 Oh that one would hear me! behold, my desire is, that the Almighty would answer me, and that mine adversary had written a book.
36 31:33 Ou bien aurais-je, c’est humain, caché mes fautes et refusé de reconnaître mes torts?	36 Surely I would take it upon my shoulder, and bind it as a crown to me.
37 31:34 Ai-je alors vécu craignant les rumeurs, redoutant le mépris des familles, m’enfermant chez moi dans le silence?	37 I would declare unto him the number of my steps; as a prince would I go near unto him.
38 31:35 Ah! qui me donnera d’être entendu? Je le signe: que le Puissant maintenant me réponde, que l’adversaire écrive son réquisitoire:	38 If my land cry against me, or that the furrows likewise thereof complain;
39 31:36 je le porterai sur ma poitrine, je m’en ferai des couronnes.	39 If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, or have caused the owners thereof to lose their life:
40 31:37 Je lui rendrai compte de tous mes pas, je me présenterai chez lui comme un prince. Fin des paroles de Job.	40 Let thistles grow instead of wheat, and cockle instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.
