1 Now the men of Israel had sworn at Mizpah, "No one of us shall give his daughter in marriage to Benjamin."	1 Os filhos de Israel tinham jurado em Masfa, dizendo: Nenhum de nós dará a sua filha por mulher aos filhos de Benjamim.
2 And the people came to Bethel, and sat there till evening before God, and they lifted up their voices and wept bitterly.	2 Foram todos à casa de Deus, em Silo, e, sentados na sua presença até à tarde, levantaram a vós, dizendo:
3 And they said, "O LORD, the God of Israel, why has this come to pass in Israel, that there should be today one tribe lacking in Israel?"	3 Senhor Deus de Israel, por que aconteceu ao teu povo esta desgraça de ser hoje cortada de nós uma das tribos?
4 And on the morrow the people rose early, and built there an altar, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings.	4 Ao outro dia, tendo-se levantado de madrugada, erigiram um altar, ofereceram nele holocaustos e vítimas pacíficas, e disseram:
5 And the people of Israel said, "Which of all the tribes of Israel did not come up in the assembly to the LORD?" For they had taken a great oath concerning him who did not come up to the LORD to Mizpah, saying, "He shall be put to death."	5 Quem de entre todas as tribos de Israel não marchou com o exército do Senhor? Com efeito, estando em Masfa, tinham-se obrigado com um solene juramento a matar os que faltassem.
6 And the people of Israel had compassion for Benjamin their brother, and said, "One tribe is cut off from Israel this day.	6 Os filhos de Israel, arrependidos do que tinha acontecido a Benjamim, seu irmão, começaram a dizer: Foi cortada de Israel uma tribo;
7 What shall we do for wives for those who are left, since we have sworn by the LORD that we will not give them any of our daughters for wives?"	7 donde hão-de tomar mulheres (os poucos que restam), se jurámos todos que lhes não daríamos as nossas filhas.
8 And they said, "What one is there of the tribes of Israel that did not come up to the LORD to Mizpah?" And behold, no one had come to the camp from Jabesh-gilead, to the assembly.	8 Por isso disseram: Quem é de todas as tribos de Israel, que não compareceu diante do Senhor em Masfa? E verificou-se que os habitantes de Jabes-Galaad não tinham estado naquele exército.
9 For when the people were mustered, behold, not one of the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead was there.	9 Fez-se o recenseamento do povo e não se achou ninguém de Jabes-Galaad.
10 So the congregation sent thither twelve thousand of their bravest men, and commanded them, "Go and smite the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead with the edge of the sword; also the women and the little ones.	10 Mandaram pois dez mil homens fortíssimos e ordenaram-lhes: Ide e passai ao fio da espada os habitantes de Jabes-Galaad, tanto as suas mulheres como os seus meninos.
11 This is what you shall do; every male and every woman that has lain with a male you shall utterly destroy."	11 Eis o que devereis observar: Matai todos os varões e todas as mulheres não virgens, mas reservai virgens.
12 And they found among the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead four hundred young virgins who had not known man by lying with him; and they brought them to the camp at Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.	12 E encontraram-se em Jabes-Galaad quatrocentas virgens, que não tinham conhecido varão, e conduziram-nas ao campo de Silo, na terra de Canaan.
13 Then the whole congregation sent word to the Benjaminites who were at the rock of Rimmon, and proclaimed peace to them.	13 Mandaram mensageiros aos filhos de Benjamim , que estavam no rochedo de Remon, e ofereceram-lhes a paz.
14 And Benjamin returned at that time; and they gave them the women whom they had saved alive of the women of Jabesh-gilead; but they did not suffice for them.	14 Então os filhos de Benjamim vieram, e foram-lhes dadas por mulheres as filhas de Jabes-Qalaad, mas não eram bastantes.
15 And the people had compassion on Benjamin because the LORD had made a breach in the tribes of Israel.	15 E todo o Israel teve muita pena, e arrependeu-se da destruição duma das tribos de Israel.
16 Then the elders of the congregation said, "What shall we do for wives for those who are left, since the women are destroyed out of Benjamin?"	16 Os anciãos disseram: Que faremos dos outros, que não receberam mulheres, pois todas as mulheres da tribo de Benjamim pereceram?
17 And they said, "There must be an inheritance for the survivors of Benjamin, that a tribe be not blotted out from Israel.	17 Fique em Benjamim a herança dos que escaparam, para que não pereça uma das tribos de Israel.
18 Yet we cannot give them wives of our daughters." For the people of Israel had sworn, "Cursed be he who gives a wife to Benjamin."	18 Nós não podemos dar-lhes as nossas filhas, porque estamos ligados com o juramento e com as imprecações que fizemos, dizendo: Maldito o que der sua filha por mulher aos Benjamitas.
19 So they said, "Behold, there is the yearly feast of the LORD at Shiloh, which is north of Bethel, on the east of the highway that goes up from Bethel to Shechem, and south of Lebonah."	19 E disseram: Eis que se avizinha a solenidade anual do Senhor em Silo, que está situado ao setentrião da cidade de Betel, ao oriente do caminho que vai do Betel a Siquem, e ao meio-dia da cidade de Lebona.
20 And they commanded the Benjaminites, saying, "Go and lie in wait in the vineyards,	20 Depois deram esta ordem aos filhos de Benjamim: Ide e escondei-vos nas vinhas.
21 and watch; if the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in the dances, then come out of the vineyards and seize each man his wife from the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin.	21 Quando virdes as filhas de Silo sair, segundo o costume, para dançar em coro, saí de repente das vinhas, e cada um tome uma para mulher, e parti para a terra de Benjamim.
22 And when their fathers or their brothers come to complain to us, we will say to them, 'Grant them graciously to us; because we did not take for each man of them his wife in battle, neither did you give them to them, else you would now be guilty.'"	22 Quando vierem seus pais e irmãos, e começarem a queixar-se de vós, nós lhes diremos: Tende compaixão deles, pois na guerra não tomámos uma mulher para cada um. Na verdade não fostes vós que lhas destes, senão teríeis incorrido em culpa:
23 And the Benjaminites did so, and took their wives, according to their number, from the dancers whom they carried off; then they went and returned to their inheritance, and rebuilt the towns, and dwelt in them.	23 Os filhos de Benjamim fizeram como lhes tinha sido mandado; segundo o seu número, cada um tomou para sua mulher uma, de entre as donzelas que dançavam. (Depois) retiraram-se para as suas possessões, edificando as cidades e habitando nelas.
24 And the people of Israel departed from there at that time, every man to his tribe and family, and they went out from there every man to his inheritance.	24 Os filhos de Israel também voltaram para as suas toadas, segundo as suas tribos e famílias.
25 In those days there was no king in Israel; every man did what was right in his own eyes.	25 Naquele tempo não havia rei em Israel; mas cada um fazia o que lhe parecia justo.
