1 Now the men of Israel had sworn at Mizpah, "No one of us shall give his daughter in marriage to Benjamin."	1 I figli d'Israele, avendo fatto in Masfa questo giuramento: « Nessuno di noi darà delle sue figlie in moglie ai figli di Beniamino »,
2 And the people came to Bethel, and sat there till evening before God, and they lifted up their voices and wept bitterly.	2 vennero tutti alla casa di Dio in Silo e stando seduti a lei davanti fino alla sera, si misero, alzando la voce, a piangere con alte grida e a dire:
3 And they said, "O LORD, the God of Israel, why has this come to pass in Israel, that there should be today one tribe lacking in Israel?"	3 « Perchè mai, o Signore Dio d'Israele, è accaduta al tuo popolo questa disgrazia di non aver più oggi una tribù? »
4 And on the morrow the people rose early, and built there an altar, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings.	4 Il giorno dopo, alzatisi di buon mattino, eressero un altare e dopo avervi offerto olocausti e vittime pacifiche dissero:
5 And the people of Israel said, "Which of all the tribes of Israel did not come up in the assembly to the LORD?" For they had taken a great oath concerning him who did not come up to the LORD to Mizpah, saying, "He shall be put to death."	5 « Chi, tra le tribù d'Israele non è salito coll'esercito del Signore? » Avevano solennemente giurato, mentre erano in Masfa, di uccidere quelli che fossero mancati.
6 And the people of Israel had compassion for Benjamin their brother, and said, "One tribe is cut off from Israel this day.	6 Or dunque i figli d'Israele, pentiti di quello che avevan fatto a Beniamino loro fratello, cominciarono a dire: « Una tribù è stata tolta a Israele!
7 What shall we do for wives for those who are left, since we have sworn by the LORD that we will not give them any of our daughters for wives?"	7 E donde prenderanno essi le mogli, se tutti d'accordo abbiamo giurato di non dar loro le nostre figlie? »
8 And they said, "What one is there of the tribes of Israel that did not come up to the LORD to Mizpah?" And behold, no one had come to the camp from Jabesh-gilead, to the assembly.	8 Chiesero adunque: « Chi, fra tutte le tribù d'Israele, non è salito in Masfa presso il Signore? » Fu trovato che gli abitanti di labes Galaad non erano stati in quell'esercito,
9 For when the people were mustered, behold, not one of the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead was there.	9 ( e anche in quel tempo nel quale gl'israeliti erano in Silo, non vi si trovò alcuno di loro).
10 So the congregation sent thither twelve thousand of their bravest men, and commanded them, "Go and smite the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead with the edge of the sword; also the women and the little ones.	10 Perciò mandarono dieci mila uomini fortissimi con questo ordine: « Andate a passare a fil di spada gli abitanti di labes Galaad colle loro mogli e coi loro bambini,
11 This is what you shall do; every male and every woman that has lain with a male you shall utterly destroy."	11 ed ecco quanto dovete osservare: uccidete tutti i maschi e le donne che hanno conosciuto uomo; ma riservate le vergini ».
12 And they found among the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead four hundred young virgins who had not known man by lying with him; and they brought them to the camp at Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.	12 Avendo trovato in Iabes Galaad quattrocento vergini, che non avevan conosciuto uomo, le condussero al campo in Silo, nella terra di Canaan.
13 Then the whole congregation sent word to the Benjaminites who were at the rock of Rimmon, and proclaimed peace to them.	13 Mandaron poi degli ambasciatori ai figli di Beniamino che erano alla rupe di Remmon, coll'ordine di accoglierli in pace.
14 And Benjamin returned at that time; and they gave them the women whom they had saved alive of the women of Jabesh-gilead; but they did not suffice for them.	14 Allora i figli di Beniamino andarono, e furono loro date per mogli le figlie di labes Galaad; ma non ne furono trovate abbastanza per essi.
15 And the people had compassion on Benjamin because the LORD had made a breach in the tribes of Israel.	15 Tutto Israele ne provò gran dolore e si pentì d'aver distrutta una tribù d'Israele.
16 Then the elders of the congregation said, "What shall we do for wives for those who are left, since the women are destroyed out of Benjamin?"	16 E gli anziani dissero: « Che farem noi per gli altri che non hanno avuta moglie? Tutte le donne di Beniamino sono state uccise,
17 And they said, "There must be an inheritance for the survivors of Benjamin, that a tribe be not blotted out from Israel.	17 e noi dobbiamo provvedere con ogni cura e diligenza, affinchè non perisca una tribù d'Israele;
18 Yet we cannot give them wives of our daughters." For the people of Israel had sworn, "Cursed be he who gives a wife to Benjamin."	18 ma non possiamo dar loro le nostre figlie, essendo legati dal giuramento e dalla maledizione con cui abbiamo detto: Maledetto chi darà la sua figlia in moglie a quelli di Beniamino ».
19 So they said, "Behold, there is the yearly feast of the LORD at Shiloh, which is north of Bethel, on the east of the highway that goes up from Bethel to Shechem, and south of Lebonah."	19 Presa poi una risoluzione dissero, « Ecco, la solennità anniversaria del Signore si celebra in Silo, che è a settentrione di Betel, ad oriente della strada che mena da Betel a Sichem, e a mezzodì della città di Lebona ».
20 And they commanded the Benjaminites, saying, "Go and lie in wait in the vineyards,	20 Poi dettero quest'ordine ai figli di Beniamino: « Andate a nascondervi nelle vigne,
21 and watch; if the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in the dances, then come out of the vineyards and seize each man his wife from the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin.	21 e quando vedrete le figlie di Silo avanzarsi per ballare secondo il costume, uscite all'improvviso dalle vigne, ciascuno se ne prenda una per moglie, e poi tornate nella terra di Beniamino.
22 And when their fathers or their brothers come to complain to us, we will say to them, 'Grant them graciously to us; because we did not take for each man of them his wife in battle, neither did you give them to them, else you would now be guilty.'"	22 Quando poi verranno i loro padri e i loro fratelli a lamentarsi di voi e ad accusarvi, diremo loro: « Abbiatene compassione! non le hanno rapite per diritto di guerra e di vittoria; ma dopo avervi pregato di poterle sposare, non avendole loro date, il torto è dalla vostra parte! »
23 And the Benjaminites did so, and took their wives, according to their number, from the dancers whom they carried off; then they went and returned to their inheritance, and rebuilt the towns, and dwelt in them.	23 E i figli di Beniamino fecero secondo l'ordine loro dato: secondo il loro numero, ciascuno si rapi una moglie tra le fanciulle che ballavano, poi se ne tornarono nel loro territorio, a riedificar le città per abitarvi.
24 And the people of Israel departed from there at that time, every man to his tribe and family, and they went out from there every man to his inheritance.	24 Anche i figli d'Israele, secondo le tribù e le famiglie, se ne tornarono alle loro terre. In quel tempo non vi era re in Israele; ma ciascuno faceva ciò che gli pareva bene.
25 In those days there was no king in Israel; every man did what was right in his own eyes.
