1 Now the angel of the LORD went up from Gilgal to Bochim. And he said, "I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you into the land which I swore to give to your fathers. I said, 'I will never break my covenant with you,	1 Ora l’angelo di Jahvè salì da Galgala a Bochim e disse: «Io vi ho fatto uscire dall’Egitto e vi ho condotto nella terra che avevo giurato ai vostri padri dicendo: “Non romperò mai l’alleanza che ho fatto con voi
2 and you shall make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land; you shall break down their altars.' But you have not obeyed my command. What is this you have done?	2 purché voi non patteggiate con gli abitanti di questo paese, ma distruggiate i loro altari”. Voi invece non avete ascoltato la mia voce. Perché avete fatto questo?
3 So now I say, I will not drive them out before you; but they shall become adversaries." to you, and their gods shall be a snare to you."	3 Ora dico: “Non li farò cedere innanzi a voi, anzi vi staranno ai fianchi e i loro dèi vi saranno di inciampo”».
4 When the angel of the LORD spoke these words to all the people of Israel, the people lifted up their voices and wept.	4 Come l’angelo di Jahvè ebbe detto queste parole a tutti i figli di Israele, il popolo diede in grida e pianti.
5 And they called the name of that place Bochim; and they sacrificed there to the LORD.	5 Così quel luogo fu chiamato Bochim: là offrirono sacrifici a Jahvè.
6 When Joshua dismissed the people, the people of Israel went each to his inheritance to take possession of the land.	6 Allora Giosuè congedò il popolo e i figli di Israele si recarono ognuno verso la propria eredità per occupare il paese.
7 And the people served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great work which the LORD had done for Israel.	7 Il popolo servì Jahvè per tutto il tempo di Giosuè e per tutto il tempo degli anziani che sopravvissero a Giosuè e avevano visto tutte le grandi opere che Jahvè aveva compiuto in favore di Israele.
8 And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died at the age of one hundred and ten years.	8 Giosuè figlio di Nun, servitore di Jahvè, morì all’età di centodieci anni
9 And they buried him within the bounds of his inheritance in Timnath-heres, in the hill country of Ephraim, north of the mountain of Gaash.	9 e fu sepolto entro il terreno che gli era stato assegnato a Timnat-Kheres, sulla montagna di Efraim, a nord del monte Gaash.
10 And all that generation also were gathered to their fathers; and there arose another generation after them, who did not know the LORD or the work which he had done for Israel.	10 Anche tutta quella generazione a sua volta si riunì ai suoi padri: allora le succedette una generazione diversa che non conosceva Jahvè né le opere che aveva compiuto per Israele.
11 And the people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the LORD and served the Baals;	11 Allora i figli di Israele fecero ciò che è male agli occhi di Jahvè e servirono i Baal.
12 and they forsook the LORD, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt; they went after other gods, from among the gods of the peoples who were round about them, and bowed down to them; and they provoked the LORD to anger.	12 Abbandonarono Jahvè Dio dei loro padri, che li aveva fatti uscire dalla terra d’Egitto, e seguirono altri dèi tra quelli dei popoli vicini. Si prostrarono innanzi a loro e irritarono Jahvè.
13 They forsook the LORD, and served the Baals and the Ashtaroth.	13 Abbandonarono Jahvè per servire Baal e Astarte.
14 So the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he gave them over to plunderers, who plundered them; and he sold them into the power of their enemies round about, so that they could no longer withstand their enemies.	14 Allora si accese l’ira di Jahvè contro Israele. Egli li mise in potere ai predoni che li depredarono, li vendette ai nemici all’intorno, ai quali essi non furono capaci di resistere.
15 Whenever they marched out, the hand of the LORD was against them for evil, as the LORD had warned, and as the LORD had sworn to them; and they were in sore straits.	15 In ogni loro spedizione la mano di Jahvè era contro di loro, come Jahvè aveva detto e come Jahvè aveva giurato loro: li ridusse all’estremo.
16 Then the LORD raised up judges, who saved them out of the power of those who plundered them.	16 Allora Jahvè cominciò a suscitare per loro dei Giudici e liberò i figli di Israele dalla mano dei loro depredatori.
17 And yet they did not listen to their judges; for they played the harlot after other gods and bowed down to them; they soon turned aside from the way in which their fathers had walked, who had obeyed the commandments of the LORD, and they did not do so.	17 Ma essi non ascoltavano neppure i loro Giudici: anzi, si prostituivano ad altri dèi, si prostravano innanzi a loro, ben presto deviarono dalla via che avevano seguito i loro padri obbedendo ai comandi di Jahvè: essi non agivano affatto così.
18 Whenever the LORD raised up judges for them, the LORD was with the judge, and he saved them from the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge; for the LORD was moved to pity by their groaning because of those who afflicted and oppressed them.	18 Quando dunque Jahvè suscitava loro un Giudice, Jahvè era con il Giudice e li salvava dalla mano dei loro nemici per tutto il tempo del Giudice: perché Jahvè si lasciava commuovere quando gemevano per causa di coloro che li opprimevano e li tenevano in miseria.
19 But whenever the judge died, they turned back and behaved worse than their fathers, going after other gods, serving them and bowing down to them; they did not drop any of their practices or their stubborn ways.	19 Ma, morto il Giudice, tornavano a fare peggio dei loro padri per seguire altri dèi, servirli e prostrarsi innanzi a loro: non rinunciavano in nulla alle pratiche dei loro padri, alla loro condotta ostinata.
20 So the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel; and he said, "Because this people have transgressed my covenant which I commanded their fathers, and have not obeyed my voice,	20 Allora si accese l’ira di Jahvè contro Israele. Egli disse: «Poiché questo popolo ha trasgredito l’alleanza che avevo prescritto ai suoi padri e non ha ascoltato la mia voce,
21 I will not henceforth drive out before them any of the nations that Joshua left when he died,	21 io a mia volta non caccerò più via nessuno dei popoli che Giosuè lasciò sopravvivere quando morì;
22 that by them I may test Israel, whether they will take care to walk in the way of the LORD as their fathers did, or not."	22 e ciò per mettere Israele alla prova mediante loro, per vedere se seguirà o no la via di Jahvè come la seguirono i suoi padri».
23 So the LORD left those nations, not driving them out at once, and he did not give them into the power of Joshua.	23 Per questo Jahvè lasciò sopravvivere quei popoli, non si affrettò a cacciarli e non li mise in mano a Giosuè.
