Judges 18

1 In those days there was no king in Israel. And in those days the tribe of the Danites was seeking for itself an inheritance to dwell in; for until then no inheritance among the tribes of Israel had fallen to them.	1 Zu jener Zeit gab es noch keinen König in Israel; und der Stamm der Daniten suchte sich damals gerade ein Gebiet zur Ansiedelung, denn es war ihm bis dahin inmitten der israelitischen Stämme noch kein Gebiet als Erbbesitz zugefallen.
2 So the Danites sent five able men from the whole number of their tribe, from Zorah and from Eshta-ol, to spy out the land and to explore it; and they said to them, "Go and explore the land." And they came to the hill country of Ephraim, to the house of Micah, and lodged there.	2 Daher schickten die Daniten fünf Männer aus der Gesamtheit ihrer Stammesgenossen ab, kriegstüchtige Männer aus Zora und Esthaol, um das Land auszukundschaften und zu erforschen, und gaben ihnen den Auftrag, sich zur Erforschung des Landes aufzumachen. So kamen diese denn auf das Gebirge Ephraim in den Wohnort Michas und übernachteten dort.
3 When they were by the house of Micah, they recognized the voice of the young Levite; and they turned aside and said to him, "Who brought you here? What are you doing in this place? What is your business here?"	3 Als sie nun in der Nähe von Michas Hause waren und den jungen Mann, den Leviten, an seiner Sprache (= Mundart) erkannten, kehrten sie dort ein und fragten ihn: »Wer hat dich hierher gebracht? Was tust du hier, und wie geht’s dir hier?«
4 And he said to them, "Thus and thus has Micah dealt with me: he has hired me, and I have become his priest."	4 Da antwortete er ihnen: »So und so hat Micha mit mir verhandelt und mich dann in seinen Dienst genommen, und ich bin sein Priester geworden.«
5 And they said to him, "Inquire of God, we pray thee, that we may know whether the journey on which we are setting out will succeed."	5 Da baten sie ihn: »Befrage doch Gott, damit wir erfahren, ob das Unternehmen, für das wir jetzt unterwegs sind, glücklichen Erfolg haben wird.«
6 And the priest said to them, "Go in peace. The journey on which you go is under the eye of the LORD."	6 Der Priester gab ihnen hierauf den Bescheid: »Zieht getrost hin: euer jetziges Unternehmen ist dem HERRN wohlgefällig!«
7 Then the five men departed, and came to Laish, and saw the people who were there, how they dwelt in security, after the manner of the Sidonians, quiet and unsuspecting, lacking nothing that is in the earth, and possessing wealth, and how they were far from the Sidonians and had no dealings with any one.	7 Da zogen die fünf Männer weiter, gelangten nach Lais und sahen, daß die dortige Bevölkerung nach der Weise der Sidonier sorglos lebte, friedlich und in Sicherheit, und an nichts Mangel hatte, was es auf Erden gibt, vielmehr im Besitz von Reichtum war; daß sie auch von den Sidoniern entfernt wohnten und mit den Aramäern (= Syrern) in keiner Verbindung standen.
8 And when they came to their brethren at Zorah and Eshta-ol, their brethren said to them, "What do you report?"	8 Als sie daher zu ihren Stammesgenossen nach Zora und Esthaol zurückgekehrt waren und diese sie fragten: »Welche Auskunft bringt ihr uns?«,
9 They said, "Arise, and let us go up against them; for we have seen the land, and behold, it is very fertile. And will you do nothing? Do not be slow to go, and enter in and possess the land.	9 antworteten sie: »Auf! Laßt uns gegen sie zu Felde ziehen! Denn wir haben uns das Land angesehen und gefunden, daß es ganz vortrefflich ist. Und da sitzt ihr noch untätig da? Säumt nicht, euch aufzumachen und hinzuziehen, um das Land in Besitz zu nehmen!
10 When you go, you will come to an unsuspecting people. The land is broad; yea, God has given it into your hands, a place where there is no lack of anything that is in the earth."	10 Wenn ihr hinkommt, werdet ihr ein sorgloses Volk antreffen, dessen Land sich nach allen Seiten hin weit ausdehnt. Ja, Gott hat es in eure Hand gegeben, eine Gegend, die an nichts Mangel hat, was es auf Erden gibt.«
11 And six hundred men of the tribe of Dan, armed with weapons of war, set forth from Zorah and Eshta-ol,	11 Da brachen sechshundert wohlbewaffnete Männer von dort aus dem Stamme der Daniten, aus Zora und Esthaol, auf;
12 and went up and encamped at Kiriath-jearim in Judah. On this account that place is called Mahaneh-dan to this day; behold, it is west of Kiriath-jearim.	12 sie zogen hinauf und lagerten bei Kirjath-Jearim in Juda; daher führt der betreffende Platz den Namen ›Dans Lager‹ bis auf den heutigen Tag; er liegt bekanntlich westlich von Kirjath-Jearim.
13 And they passed on from there to the hill country of Ephraim, and came to the house of Micah.	13 Von dort zogen sie weiter in das Gebirge Ephraim und kamen in den Wohnort Michas.
14 Then the five men who had gone to spy out the country of Laish said to their brethren, "Do you know that in these houses there are an ephod, teraphim, a graven image, and a molten image? Now therefore consider what you will do."	14 Da machten die fünf Männer, die vordem zur Auskundschaftung des Gebietes der Stadt Lais ausgezogen waren, ihren Stammesgenossen die Mitteilung: »Wißt ihr wohl, daß sich in den Gehöften hier ein kostbares Priestergewand und ein Hausgott sowie ein geschnitztes und gegossenes Gottesbild (vgl. 17,4-5) befinden? Bedenkt also, was ihr zu tun habt!«
15 And they turned aside thither, and came to the house of the young Levite, at the home of Micah, and asked him of his welfare.	15 Da bogen sie vom Wege dorthin ab, traten in die Wohnung des jungen Leviten, in das Haus Michas ein, und begrüßten ihn.
16 Now the six hundred men of the Danites, armed with their weapons of war, stood by the entrance of the gate;	16 Während dann die sechshundert bewaffneten Männer, die zu den Daniten gehörten, draußen am Eingang des Tores blieben,
17 and the five men who had gone to spy out the land went up, and entered and took the graven image, the ephod, the teraphim, and the molten image, while the priest stood by the entrance of the gate with the six hundred men armed with weapons of war.	17 stiegen die fünf Männer, die vordem zur Auskundschaftung des Landes hergekommen waren, hinauf, gingen in das Haus hinein und nahmen das geschnitzte Bild sowie das Priestergewand, den Hausgott und das gegossene Bild an sich, während der Priester draußen am Toreingang bei den sechshundert bewaffneten Kriegern stand.
18 And when these went into Micah's house and took the graven image, the ephod, the teraphim, and the molten image, the priest said to them, "What are you doing?"	18 Als jene nämlich in das Haus Michas eingetreten waren und das Schnitzbild sowie das Priestergewand, den Hausgott und das Gußbild wegnahmen, sagte der Priester zu ihnen: »Was macht ihr da?«
19 And they said to him, "Keep quiet, put your hand upon your mouth, and come with us, and be to us a father and a priest. Is it better for you to be priest to the house of one man, or to be priest to a tribe and family in Israel?"	19 Sie antworteten ihm: »Schweige still, lege dir die Hand auf den Mund, komm mit uns und werde unser Vater (17,10) und Priester! Ist es besser für dich, Priester für das Haus eines einzelnen Mannes zu sein oder Priester für einen ganzen Stamm und für ein Geschlecht in Israel?«
20 And the priest's heart was glad; he took the ephod, and the teraphim, and the graven image, and went in the midst of the people.	20 Da erklärte sich der Priester mit Freuden einverstanden: er nahm das Priestergewand, den Hausgott und das geschnitzte Bild und trat mitten unter die Kriegsleute.
21 So they turned and departed, putting the little ones and the cattle and the goods in front of them.	21 Darauf wandten sie sich zum Abzug, nachdem sie noch die Frauen mit den Kindern sowie das Herdenvieh und die wertvollen Gegenstände an ihre Spitze gestellt hatten.
22 When they were a good way from the home of Micah, the men who were in the houses near Micah's house were called out, and they overtook the Danites.	22 Kaum hatten sie sich aber eine Strecke vom Hause Michas entfernt, als sich die Männer, die in den Gehöften beim Hause Michas wohnten, zusammenscharten und die Daniten einholten.
23 And they shouted to the Danites, who turned round and said to Micah, "What ails you that you come with such a company?"	23 Als sie dann den Daniten zuriefen, wandten diese sich um und fragten Micha: »Was soll dieser Auflauf bedeuten?«
24 And he said, "You take my gods which I made, and the priest, and go away, and what have I left? How then do you ask me, 'What ails you?"	24 Er antwortete: »Meinen Gott, den ich mir gemacht habe, habt ihr mit euch genommen samt dem Priester und seid weggezogen: was bleibt mir da noch? Wie könnt ihr mich nur fragen, was ich hier will?«
25 And the Danites said to him, "Do not let your voice be heard among us, lest angry fellows fall upon you, and you lose your life with the lives of your household."	25 Aber die Daniten erwiderten ihm: »Laß dein Geschrei uns hier nicht länger hören, sonst könnten erbitterte Männer über euch herfallen, und es könnte dich und deine Angehörigen das Leben kosten!«
26 Then the Danites went their way; and when Micah saw that they were too strong for him, he turned and went back to his home.	26 Darauf zogen die Daniten ihres Weges, und Micha, der wohl einsah, daß sie stärker waren als er, wandte sich um und kehrte nach Hause zurück.
27 And taking what Micah had made, and the priest who belonged to him, the Danites came to Laish, to a people quiet and unsuspecting, and smote them with the edge of the sword, and burned the city with fire.	27 Nachdem aber die Daniten das Gottesbild (V.24), das Micha sich angefertigt hatte, samt dem Priester, der bei ihm gewesen war, mitgenommen hatten, überfielen sie Lais, dessen Bevölkerung friedlich und sorglos war, machten alle Einwohner mit dem Schwert nieder und ließen die Stadt in Flammen aufgehen,
28 And there was no deliverer because it was far from Sidon, and they had no dealings with any one. It was in the valley which belongs to Beth-rehob. And they rebuilt the city, and dwelt in it.	28 ohne daß ihr jemand zu Hilfe gekommen wäre; denn der Ort lag von Sidon weit entfernt und stand auch mit den Aramäern (= Syrern; V.7) in keiner Verbindung; er lag nämlich in dem Tal, das sich nach Beth-Rehob hin erstreckt. Sie bauten dann die Stadt wieder auf und siedelten sich in ihr an,
29 And they named the city Dan, after the name of Dan their ancestor, who was born to Israel; but the name of the city was Laish at the first.	29 nannten aber die Stadt ›Dan‹ nach dem Namen ihres Ahnherrn Dan, dem Sohne Israels, während der Ort früher Lais geheißen hatte.
30 And the Danites set up the graven image for themselves; and Jonathan the son of Gershom, son of Moses, and his sons were priests to the tribe of the Danites until the day of the captivity of the land.	30 Sodann stellten die Daniten das geschnitzte Gottesbild bei sich auf, und Jonathan, der Sohn Gersoms, des Sohnes Moses, er und seine Nachkommen, waren Priester bei dem Stamme der Daniten bis zu der Zeit, wo die Bevölkerung in die Verbannung (oder: Gefangenschaft) ziehen mußte.
31 So they set up Micah's graven image which he made, as long as the house of God was at Shiloh.	31 Das geschnitzte Bild aber, das Micha hatte anfertigen lassen, war bei ihnen aufgestellt die ganze Zeit hindurch, solange das Haus Gottes sich in Silo befand.
