1 In those days there was no king in Israel. And in those days the tribe of the Danites was seeking for itself an inheritance to dwell in; for until then no inheritance among the tribes of Israel had fallen to them.	1 - In quel tempo non eravi re in Israele e la tribù di Dan andava cercando un possedimento per abitarvi, giacchè fino a quei giorni tra tutte le altre tribù non aveva ancora ottenuta la sua porzione.
2 So the Danites sent five able men from the whole number of their tribe, from Zorah and from Eshta-ol, to spy out the land and to explore it; and they said to them, "Go and explore the land." And they came to the hill country of Ephraim, to the house of Micah, and lodged there.	2 I figli di Dan mandarono dunque cinque uomini tra i più forti di Saraa e di Estaol della loro stirpe e della loro famiglia per esplorare il paese ed esaminarlo minutamente, e dissero ad essi: «Andate ad esplorare il paese». Essendo venuti, cammin facendo, nella montagna di Efraim ed essendo entrati in casa di Mica, vi si riposarono.
3 When they were by the house of Micah, they recognized the voice of the young Levite; and they turned aside and said to him, "Who brought you here? What are you doing in this place? What is your business here?"	3 Inteso che ebbero la voce del giovane levita presso il quale erano ospitati, gli chiesero: «Chi ti ha condotto qua? Cosa fai qui? Perchè hai voluto venirvi?».
4 And he said to them, "Thus and thus has Micah dealt with me: he has hired me, and I have become his priest."	4 E avendo egli risposto: «Mica mi ha fatto queste e queste proposte e mi paga, perchè io gli faccia da sacerdote».
5 And they said to him, "Inquire of God, we pray thee, that we may know whether the journey on which we are setting out will succeed."	5 Lo pregarono che consultasse il Signore per sapere se avrebbero fatto un buon viaggio e se l'impresa sarebbe riuscita.
6 And the priest said to them, "Go in peace. The journey on which you go is under the eye of the LORD."	6 Ottenuto il responso: «Andate in pace; il Signore guarda al vostro viaggio e alla via per la quale andate»,
7 Then the five men departed, and came to Laish, and saw the people who were there, how they dwelt in security, after the manner of the Sidonians, quiet and unsuspecting, lacking nothing that is in the earth, and possessing wealth, and how they were far from the Sidonians and had no dealings with any one.	7 i cinque uomini se ne partirono e vennero a Lais e videro un popolo abitante colà senza timore alcuno, alla maniera dei Sidoni, sicuro e tranquillo, non avendo nemici, pieno di grandi ricchezze e lontano da Sidone e separato da ogni altro popolo.
8 And when they came to their brethren at Zorah and Eshta-ol, their brethren said to them, "What do you report?"	8 Fecero allora ritorno ai propri fratelli in Saraa e ad Estaol e, interrogati da loro che cosa avessero fatto, risposero:
9 They said, "Arise, and let us go up against them; for we have seen the land, and behold, it is very fertile. And will you do nothing? Do not be slow to go, and enter in and possess the land.	9 «Levatevi e andiamo colà, poichè abbiam visto una terra molto ricca e ubertosa; non lasciatevi sfuggir l'occasione, non perdete tempo; andiamo a possederla; non dovremo sostenere nessuna fatica.
10 When you go, you will come to an unsuspecting people. The land is broad; yea, God has given it into your hands, a place where there is no lack of anything that is in the earth."	10 Giungeremo a gente che sta sicura in un paese molto vasto, e il Signore ci darà un luogo, dove non mancherà nulla di ciò che la terra produce».
11 And six hundred men of the tribe of Dan, armed with weapons of war, set forth from Zorah and Eshta-ol,	11 Partirono adunque dalla parentela di Dan, cioè da Saraa e da Estaol, in numero di seicento uomini armati di tutto punto.
12 and went up and encamped at Kiriath-jearim in Judah. On this account that place is called Mahaneh-dan to this day; behold, it is west of Kiriath-jearim.	12 Salendo si arrestarono in Cariatiarim di Giuda, in un luogo che da quel tempo in poi fu chiamato "Campo di Dan" e si trova dietro a Cariatiarim.
13 And they passed on from there to the hill country of Ephraim, and came to the house of Micah.	13 Quindi passarono sulla montagna di Efraim e venuti alla casa di Mica,
14 Then the five men who had gone to spy out the country of Laish said to their brethren, "Do you know that in these houses there are an ephod, teraphim, a graven image, and a molten image? Now therefore consider what you will do."	14 i cinque uomini, che erano stati mandati prima a esaminare il paese di Lais, dissero ai loro fratelli: «Dovete sapere che in questa casa vi è un efod, dei terafim e un'immagine scolpita e fusa. Vedete voi quel che vi piace».
15 And they turned aside thither, and came to the house of the young Levite, at the home of Micah, and asked him of his welfare.	15 Avendo deviato un po' entrarono nella casa del giovane levita, che stava con Mica, e lo salutarono amichevolmente.
16 Now the six hundred men of the Danites, armed with their weapons of war, stood by the entrance of the gate;	16 Frattanto i seicento uomini, armati com'erano, stavano innanzi alla porta,
17 and the five men who had gone to spy out the land went up, and entered and took the graven image, the ephod, the teraphim, and the molten image, while the priest stood by the entrance of the gate with the six hundred men armed with weapons of war.	17 mentre quelli che erano entrati nella casa del giovane si studiavano di togliere la scoltura, l'efod, i terafim e la statua di getto. Frattanto il sacerdote stava alla porta e i seicento fortissimi uomini erano in attesa non molto lontano.
18 And when these went into Micah's house and took the graven image, the ephod, the teraphim, and the molten image, the priest said to them, "What are you doing?"	18 Quelli che erano entrati presero la scoltura, l'efod, e la statua di getto. E il sacerdote disse loro: «Che cosa fate?».
19 And they said to him, "Keep quiet, put your hand upon your mouth, and come with us, and be to us a father and a priest. Is it better for you to be priest to the house of one man, or to be priest to a tribe and family in Israel?"	19 «Taci» risposero «e poni il tuo dito sopra la bocca e vieni con noi: così avremo in te un padre e un sacerdote. Non è meglio per te essere sacerdote in una tribù e famiglia d'Israele che nella casa di un solo uomo?».
20 And the priest's heart was glad; he took the ephod, and the teraphim, and the graven image, and went in the midst of the people.	20 A queste parole egli si acquietò e, preso l'efod, gli idoli e l'immagine scolpita, se ne andò con loro.
21 So they turned and departed, putting the little ones and the cattle and the goods in front of them.	21 Essendosi messi in cammino, preceduti dai fanciulli, dalle bestie da soma e da tutto ciò che aveano di più prezioso,
22 When they were a good way from the home of Micah, the men who were in the houses near Micah's house were called out, and they overtook the Danites.	22 erano già lungi dalla casa di Mica, quando gli uomini che stavano in quella abitazione si misero a inseguirli con grandi clamori
23 And they shouted to the Danites, who turned round and said to Micah, "What ails you that you come with such a company?"	23 e ad alzare la voce dietro essi. Voltisi questi indietro, dissero a Mica: «Cosa vuoi? Perchè gridi?».
24 And he said, "You take my gods which I made, and the priest, and go away, and what have I left? How then do you ask me, 'What ails you?"	24 E rispondendo egli: «Mi avete portato via i miei dèi, che mi ero fatti, e il sacerdote e quanto io avea; e domandate: - Che cosa hai? -»,
25 And the Danites said to him, "Do not let your voice be heard among us, lest angry fellows fall upon you, and you lose your life with the lives of your household."	25 i figli di Dan gli dissero: «Guardati bene dal parlare ancora contro di noi, se no, [alcuni dei nostri], irritati, verranno a te e perirai tu e tutta la tua casa».
26 Then the Danites went their way; and when Micah saw that they were too strong for him, he turned and went back to his home.	26 E così continuarono l'intrapreso cammino, mentre Mica, visto che erano più forti di lui, se ne tornò a casa.
27 And taking what Micah had made, and the priest who belonged to him, the Danites came to Laish, to a people quiet and unsuspecting, and smote them with the edge of the sword, and burned the city with fire.	27 I seicento uomini presero adunque il sacerdote e ciò che abbiamo detto e se ne vennero a Lais, a quel popol tranquillo e sicuro, e passatolo a fil di spada, diedero fuoco alla città,
28 And there was no deliverer because it was far from Sidon, and they had no dealings with any one. It was in the valley which belongs to Beth-rehob. And they rebuilt the city, and dwelt in it.	28 senza che nessuno venisse a portare soccorso, perchè erano assai lontani da Sidone e non avevano alleanza o commercio con nessun altro uomo. La città, situata nella regione di Roob, fu ricostruita di nuovo dai Daniti, che l'abitarono,
29 And they named the city Dan, after the name of Dan their ancestor, who was born to Israel; but the name of the city was Laish at the first.	29 chiamando città di Dan, dal nome del padre loro generato da Israele, quella città che prima si chiamava Lais.
30 And the Danites set up the graven image for themselves; and Jonathan the son of Gershom, son of Moses, and his sons were priests to the tribe of the Danites until the day of the captivity of the land.	30 Colà essi collocarono l'immagine scolpita e Gionata figlio di Gersam figlio di Mosè e i figli di lui furono sacerdoti nella tribù di Dan fino al tempo della loro cattività.
31 So they set up Micah's graven image which he made, as long as the house of God was at Shiloh.	31 E l'idolo di Mica restò presso di loro per tutto il tempo in cui la casa di Dio stette in Silo. In quei giorni non eravi re in Israele.
