Joshua 7

1 But the people of Israel broke faith in regard to the devoted things; for Achan the son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took some of the devoted things; and the anger of the LORD burned against the people of Israel.	1 I figli d'Israele però commisero una mancanza nell'eseguire lo sterminio, perché Acan, figlio di Carmi, figlio di Zabdi, figlio di Zerach, della tribù di Giuda, prese qualche cosa votata all'interdetto e il Signore arse di sdegno contro i figli d'Israele.
2 Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is near Beth-aven, east of Bethel, and said to them, "Go up and spy out the land." And the men went up and spied out Ai.	2 Giosuè intanto inviò degli uomini da Gerico verso Ai, che è presso Bet-Aven, a oriente di Betel, e disse loro: "Andate su ad esplorare il paese". Gli uomini salirono ed esplorarono Ai.
3 And they returned to Joshua, and said to him, "Let not all the people go up, but let about two or three thousand men go up and attack Ai; do not make the whole people toil up there, for they are but few."	3 Tornarono quindi da Giosuè e dissero: "Non salga tutto il popolo; due o tremila uomini salgano ed attacchino Ai. Non stare ad affaticare tutto il popolo perché là c'è poca gente".
4 So about three thousand went up there from the people; and they fled before the men of Ai,	4 Salirono dunque soltanto tremila soldati scelti dalla massa, ma dovettero fuggire di fronte agli uomini di Ai.
5 and the men of Ai killed about thirty-six men of them, and chased them before the gate as far as Shebarim, and slew them at the descent. And the hearts of the people melted, and became as water.	5 Questi ne uccisero circa trentasei e li inseguirono dalla porta fino a Sebarim e continuarono a colpirli lungo la discesa. Allora al popolo mancò il coraggio, si sciolsero come acqua.
6 Then Joshua rent his clothes, and fell to the earth upon his face before the ark of the LORD until the evening, he and the elders of Israel; and they put dust upon their heads.	6 Giosuè si strappò le vesti e si gettò bocconi davanti all'arca del Signore fino alla sera, e così fecero gli anziani d'Israele, cospargendosi la testa di polvere.
7 And Joshua said, "Alas, O Lord GOD, why hast thou brought this people over the Jordan at all, to give us into the hands of the Amorites, to destroy us? Would that we had been content to dwell beyond the Jordan!	7 Giosuè pregò quindi così: "Signore Dio, perché hai fatto passare il Giordano a questo popolo, forse per darci nelle mani dell'Amorreo e farci distruggere? Ah, ci fossimo contentati di restare al di là del Giordano!
8 O Lord, what can I say, when Israel has turned their backs before their enemies!	8 Ah, Signore, che posso dire io, ora che Israele ha dovuto voltare le spalle davanti ai suoi nemici?
9 For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear of it, and will surround us, and cut off our name from the earth; and what wilt thou do for thy great name?"	9 Lo verranno a sapere i Cananei e tutti gli abitanti della regione, si rivolteranno contro di noi e cancelleranno dalla terra il nostro nome. Cosa farai tu, allora, per il tuo grande nome?".
10 The LORD said to Joshua, "Arise, why have you thus fallen upon your face?	10 Rispose il Signore a Giosuè: "Lèvati su: a che cosa serve starsene bocconi?
11 Israel has sinned; they have transgressed my covenant which I commanded them; they have taken some of the devoted things; they have stolen, and lied, and put them among their own stuff.	11 Israele ha peccato; hanno trasgredito l'alleanza che io avevo imposto loro, prendendosi roba interdetta: hanno rubato, hanno dissimulato nascondendo nei propri bagagli.
12 Therefore the people of Israel cannot stand before their enemies; they turn their backs before their enemies, because they have become a thing for destruction. I will be with you no more, unless you destroy the devoted things from among you.	12 Perciò i figli d'Israele non potranno tener fronte ai loro nemici, bensì volteranno loro le spalle, perché sono divenuti infedeli. Io non sarò più con voi, se non distruggete l'anatema che è in mezzo a voi.
13 Up, sanctify the people, and say, 'Sanctify yourselves for tomorrow; for thus says the LORD, God of Israel, "There are devoted things in the midst of you, O Israel; you cannot stand before your enemies, until you take away the devoted things from among you."	13 Lèvati, fa' purificare il popolo, dicendo: "Santificatevi per domani perché così ha parlato il Signore, Dio d'Israele: L'interdetto è in mezzo a te, Israele! Tu non potrai più tener fronte ai tuoi nemici, finché non avrete tolto la causa d'interdetto in mezzo a voi.
14 In the morning therefore you shall be brought near by your tribes; and the tribe which the LORD takes shall come near by families; and the family which the LORD takes shall come near by households; and the household which the LORD takes shall come near man by man.	14 Domani all'alba vi presenterete per tribù, la tribù che il Signore per sorteggio avrà designato si presenterà per famiglie e la famiglia che il Signore avrà designato si presenterà per casati e i casati uno per uno.
15 And he who is taken with the devoted things shall be burned with fire, he and all that he has, because he has transgressed the covenant of the LORD, and because he has done a shameful thing in Israel.'"	15 Colui che sarà sorpreso nell'affare dell'interdetto, sarà bruciato con tutta la sua famiglia, perché ha trasgredito l'alleanza del Signore e ha commesso una grande infamia in Israele".
16 So Joshua rose early in the morning, and brought Israel near tribe by tribe, and the tribe of Judah was taken;	16 Giosuè si levò all'alba e fece venire Israele per tribù: cadde la sorte sulla tribù di Giuda.
17 and he brought near the families of Judah, and the family of the Zerahites was taken; and he brought near the family of the Zerahites man by man, and Zabdi was taken;	17 Fece venire allora i clan di Giuda e fu sorteggiato il clan di Zerach. Fece avvicinare il clan di Zerach per case e uscì a sorte Zabdi.
18 and he brought near his household man by man, and Achan the son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken.	18 Fece avvicinare la casa di lui, gli uomini uno per uno, e uscì a sorte Acan, figlio di Carmi, figlio di Zabdi, figlio di Zerach, della tribù di Giuda.
19 Then Joshua said to Achan, "My son, give glory to the LORD God of Israel, and render praise to him; and tell me now what you have done; do not hide it from me."	19 Disse allora Giosuè ad Acan: "Figlio mio, da' gloria al Signore, Dio d'Israele, rendendogli omaggio; dimmi che cosa hai fatto, senza nascondermi nulla!".
20 And Achan answered Joshua, "Of a truth I have sinned against the LORD God of Israel, and this is what I did:	20 Acan rispose a Giosuè: "In verità sono io che ho peccato contro il Signore, Dio d'Israele, facendo questo e questo:
21 when I saw among the spoil a beautiful mantle from Shinar, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a bar of gold weighing fifty shekels, then I coveted them, and took them; and behold, they are hidden in the earth inside my tent, with the silver underneath."	21 avendo veduto tra il bottino un magnifico mantello di Sennaar, duecento sicli d'argento, un lingotto d'oro di cinquanta sicli, li ho ardentemente desiderati e li ho presi. Ecco, sono nascosti sotto terra, in mezzo alla mia tenda, e sotto vi è l'argento".
22 So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent; and behold, it was hidden in his tent with the silver underneath.	22 Giosuè mandò alcuni giovani che corsero verso la tenda, ed ecco un nascondiglio nella sua tenda, con sotto l'argento:
23 And they took them out of the tent and brought them to Joshua and all the people of Israel; and they laid them down before the LORD.	23 essi lo presero dall'interno della tenda e lo portarono a Giosuè e a tutti i figli d'Israele, deponendolo davanti al Signore.
24 And Joshua and all Israel with him took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver and the mantle and the bar of gold, and his sons and daughters, and his oxen and asses and sheep, and his tent, and all that he had; and they brought them up to the Valley of Achor.	24 Allora Giosuè prese Acan, figlio di Zerach, con l'argento, il mantello e il lingotto d'oro, i suoi figli e le sue figlie, i suoi tori, i suoi asini e tutto il bestiame minuto, la sua tenda e tutto quanto gli apparteneva, mentre tutto Israele era con lui, e li condussero nella valle di Acor.
25 And Joshua said, "Why did you bring trouble on us? The LORD brings trouble on you today." And all Israel stoned him with stones; they burned them with fire, and stoned them with stones.	25 Giosuè disse allora: "Perché hai tu voluto affliggerci? Così il Signore affligga te, oggi!". Tutto Israele lo uccise con pietre.
26 And they raised over him a great heap of stones that remains to this day; then the LORD turned from his burning anger. Therefore to this day the name of that place is called the Valley of Achor.	26 Innalzarono quindi su di lui un grande mucchio di pietre che c'è anche oggi, e il Signore si calmò dal furore della sua ira. Perciò quel luogo si chiama fino ad oggi Valle di Acor.
