Galatians 4

1 I mean that the heir, as long as he is a child, is no better than a slave, though he is the owner of all the estate;	1 Ora aggiungo: sino a quando l’erede è fanciullo, non differisce in nulla da uno schiavo, quantunque sia padrone di tutti i beni,
2 but he is under guardians and trustees until the date set by the father.	2 ma sottostà a tutori e ad amministratori fino alla data fissata dal padre.
3 So with us; when we were children, we were slaves to the elemental spirits of the universe.	3 Così noi pure: da minorenni eravamo asserviti agli elementi del mondo.
4 But when the time had fully come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law,	4 Ma allorchè il tempo raggiunse la sua pienezza, Iddio mandò il suo Figliolo, nato da una donna, nato sotto la legge,
5 to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.	5 affinché riscattasse quelli che erano soggetti alla legge; affinché ricevessimo la dignità di figli adottivi.
6 And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, "Abba! Father!"	6 E prova che siete figli si è che Iddio mandò lo Spirito del Figlio suo nei nostri cuori, il quale grida: Abba, Padre!
7 So through God you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son then an heir.	7 Di conseguenza, tu non sei più schiavo ma figlio; e se figlio, sei, grazie a Dio, anche erede.
8 Formerly, when you did not know God, you were in bondage to beings that by nature are no gods;	8 Eppure, un tempo, quando non conoscevate Iddio, eravate schiavi di dèi, che in realtà non io sono.
9 but now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and beggarly elemental spirits, whose slaves you want to be once more?	9 Ma ora che conoscete Dio, o meglio foste da da Dio conosciuti, come potete di nuovo volgervi a quegli elementi miseri e impotenti e una seconda volta farvi loro schiavi?
10 You observe days, and months, and seasons, and years!	10 Voi osservate giorni, mesi, tempi e anni...!
11 I am afraid I have labored over you in vain.	11 Mi fate temere di aver faticato invano per voi.
12 Brethren, I beseech you, become as I am, for I also have become as you are. You did me no wrong;	12 Fratelli, ve ne prego, diventate come me, poiché anch'io mi son fatto come voi. Nessun torto m’avete fatto.
13 you know it was because of a bodily ailment that I preached the gospel to you at first;	13 Anzi, sapete che vi annunziai l’evangelo la prima volta in occasione di una mia malattia
14 and though my condition was a trial to you, you did not scorn or despise me, but received me as an angel of God, as Christ Jesus.	14 e, sebbene quella mia infermità corporale fosse per voi una prova, non ne mostraste né disprezzo né ribrezzo, ma mi accoglieste come un angelo di Dio, come Cristo Gesù.
15 What has become of the satisfaction you felt? For I bear you witness that, if possible, you would have plucked out your eyes and given them to me.	15 Dov’è dunque quel vostro gaudio? Poiché debbo rendere a voi questa testimonianza, che, se fosse stato possibile, vi sareste cavati gli occhi per darmeli.
16 Have I then become your enemy by telling you the truth?	16 Son io, dunque, diventato vostro nemico col dirvi la verità?
17 They make much of you, but for no good purpose; they want to shut you out, that you may make much of them.	17 Certuni manifestano dello zelo per voi, ma non onestamente; vogliono piuttosto separarvi da me, affinché rivolgiate ad essi il’ vostro zelo.
18 For a good purpose it is always good to be made much of, and not only when I am present with you.	18 È cosa buona essere oggetto di zelo, ma nel bene e sempre, e non solo quando io mi trovo presso di voi.
19 My little children, with whom I am again in travail until Christ be formed in you!	19 Figlioli miei, di nuovo io soffro per voi i dolori del parto, finché Cristo non sia formato in voi.
20 I could wish to be present with you now and to change my tone, for I am perplexed about you.	20 Oh! come vorrei trovarmi ora presso di voi, per prendere un altro tono, poiché mi sento in imbarazzo nei vostri riguardi.
21 Tell me, you who desire to be under law, do you not hear the law?	21 Ditemi, voi che volete sottomettervi alla legge: non udite questa legge?
22 For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by a slave and one by a free woman.	22 Sta infatti scritto che Abramo ebbe due figli, uno da una schiava e l’altro dalla moglie libera.
23 But the son of the slave was born according to the flesh, the son of the free woman through promise.	23 Ma quello avuto dalla schiava è nato secondo natura mentre il figlio della libera in virtù della promessa divina.
24 Now this is an allegory: these women are two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai, bearing children for slavery; she is Hagar.	24 Tali cose han valore allegorico: quelle donne rappresentano le due alleanze; la prima proviene dal monte Sinai e genera per la schiavitù: ed è Agar —
25 Now Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia; she corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children.	25 poiché il monte Sinai si trova in Arabia — e corrisponde alla Gerusalemme attuale, la quale è appunto schiava insieme con i figli suoi.
26 But the Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother.	26 La Gerusalemme di lassù, all’opposto, è libera ed è madre nostra;
27 For it is written, "Rejoice, O barren one who does not bear; break forth and shout, you who are not in travail; for the children of the desolate one are many more than the children of her that is married."	27 infatti sta scritto: Rallegrati, o sterile, tu che non generi ; erompi in grida di gioia, tu che non conosci i dolori: del parto; perché i figli dell’abbandonata son più numerosi di quelli di colei che ha il marito.
28 Now we, brethren, like Isaac, are children of promise.	28 Ora voi, o fratelli, alla maniera di Isacco, siete figli della promessa.
29 But as at that time he who was born according to the flesh persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, so it is now.	29 Ma come allora il figlio generato secondo natura perseguitava l’altro, nato secondo lo spirito, così avviene anche oggi.
30 But what does the scripture say? "Cast out the slave and her son; for the son of the slave shall not inherit with the son of the free woman."	30 Che dice però la Scrittura? Scaccia la schiava e suo figlio, poiché il figlio della schiava non deve spartire l'eredità insieme col figlio della moglie libera.
31 So, brethren, we are not children of the slave but of the free woman.	31 Perciò, o fratelli, noi non siamo figli di una schiava ma della libera.
