Romans 11

1 I ask, then, has God rejected his people? By no means! I myself am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, a member of the tribe of Benjamin.	1 Je demande donc: Dieu aurait-il rejeté son peuple? Certes non! Ne suis-je pas moi-mêmeIsraélite, de la race d'Abraham, de la tribu de Benjamin?
2 God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew. Do you not know what the scripture says of Elijah, how he pleads with God against Israel?	2 Dieu n'a pas rejeté le peuple que d'avance il a discerné. Ou bien ignorez-vous ce que dit l'Ecritureà propos d'Elie, quand il s'entretient avec Dieu pour accuser Israël:
3 "Lord, they have killed thy prophets, they have demolished thy altars, and I alone am left, and they seek my life."	3 Seigneur, ils ont tué tes prophètes, rasé tes autels, et moi je suis resté seul et ils en veulent à mavie!
4 But what is God's reply to him? "I have kept for myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal."	4 Eh bien, que lui répond l'oracle divin? Je me suis réservé 7.000 hommes qui n'ont pas fléchi legenou devant Baal.
5 So too at the present time there is a remnant, chosen by grace.	5 Ainsi pareillement aujourd'hui il subsiste un reste, élu par grâce.
6 But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works; otherwise grace would no longer be grace.	6 Mais si c'est par grâce, ce n'est plus en raison des oeuvres; autrement la grâce n'est plus grâce.
7 What then? Israel failed to obtain what it sought. The elect obtained it, but the rest were hardened,	7 Que conclure? Ce que recherche Israël, il ne l'a pas atteint; mais ceux-là l'ont atteint qui ont étéélus. Les autres, ils ont été endurcis,
8 as it is written, "God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that should not see and ears that should not hear, down to this very day."	8 selon le mot de l'Ecriture: Dieu leur a donné un esprit de torpeur: ils n'ont pas d'yeux pour voir,d'oreilles pour entendre jusqu'à ce jour.
9 And David says, "Let their table become a snare and a trap, a pitfall and a retribution for them;	9 David dit aussi: Que leur table soit un piège, un lacet, une cause de chute, et leur serve de salaire!
10 let their eyes be darkened so that they cannot see, and bend their backs for ever."	10 Que leurs yeux s'enténèbrent pour ne point voir, et fais-leur sans arrêt courber le dos!
11 So I ask, have they stumbled so as to fall? By no means! But through their trespass salvation has come to the Gentiles, so as to make Israel jealous.	11 Je demande donc: serait-ce pour une vraie chute qu'ils ont bronché? Certes non! mais leur fauxpas a procuré le salut aux païens, afin que leur propre jalousie en fût excitée.
12 Now if their trespass means riches for the world, and if their failure means riches for the Gentiles, how much more will their full inclusion mean!	12 Et si leur faux pas a fait la richesse du monde et leur amoindrissement la richesse des païens,que ne fera pas leur totalité!
13 Now I am speaking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch then as I am an apostle to the Gentiles, I magnify my ministry	13 Or je vous le dis à vous, les païens, je suis bien l'apôtre des païens et j'honore mon ministère,
14 in order to make my fellow Jews jealous, and thus save some of them.	14 mais c'est avec l'espoir d'exciter la jalousie de ceux de mon sang et d'en sauver quelques-uns.
15 For if their rejection means the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance mean but life from the dead?	15 Car si leur mise à l'écart fut une réconciliation pour le monde, que sera leur admission, sinon unerésurrection d'entre les morts?
16 If the dough offered as first fruits is holy, so is the whole lump; and if the root is holy, so are the branches.	16 Or si les prémices sont saintes, toute la pâte aussi; et si la racine est sainte, les branches aussi.
17 But if some of the branches were broken off, and you, a wild olive shoot, were grafted in their place to share the richness of the olive tree,	17 Mais si quelques-unes des branches ont été coupées tandis que toi, sauvageon d'olivier tu as étégreffé parmi elles pour bénéficier avec elles de la sève de l'olivier,
18 do not boast over the branches. If you do boast, remember it is not you that support the root, but the root that supports you.	18 ne va pas te glorifier aux dépens des branches. Ou si tu veux te glorifier, ce n'est pas toi quiportes la racine, c'est la racine qui te porte.
19 You will say, "Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in."	19 Tu diras: On a coupé des branches, pour que, moi, je fusse greffé.
20 That is true. They were broken off because of their unbelief, but you stand fast only through faith. So do not become proud, but stand in awe.	20 Fort bien. Elles ont été coupées pour leur incrédulité, et c'est la foi qui te fait tenir. Net'enorgueillis pas; crains plutôt.
21 For if God did not spare the natural branches, neither will he spare you.	21 Car si Dieu n'a pas épargné les branches naturelles, prends garde qu'il ne t'épargne pasdavantage.
22 Note then the kindness and the severity of God: severity toward those who have fallen, but God's kindness to you, provided you continue in his kindness; otherwise you too will be cut off.	22 Considère donc la bonté et la sévérité de Dieu: sévérité envers ceux qui sont tombés, et enverstoi bonté, pourvu que tu demeures en cette bonté; autrement tu seras retranché toi aussi.
23 And even the others, if they do not persist in their unbelief, will be grafted in, for God has the power to graft them in again.	23 Et eux, s'ils ne demeurent pas dans l'incrédulité, ils seront greffés: Dieu est bien assez puissantpour les greffer à nouveau.
24 For if you have been cut from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and grafted, contrary to nature, into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these natural branches be grafted back into their own olive tree.	24 En effet, si toi tu as été retranché de l'olivier sauvage auquel tu appartenais par nature, et greffé,contre nature, sur un olivier franc, combien plus eux, les branches naturelles, seront-ils greffés sur leur propreolivier!
25 Lest you be wise in your own conceits, I want you to understand this mystery, brethren: a hardening has come upon part of Israel, until the full number of the Gentiles come in,	25 Car je ne veux pas, frères, vous laisser ignorer ce mystère, de peur que vous ne vous complaisiezen votre sagesse: une partie d'Israël s'est endurcie jusqu'à ce que soit entrée la totalité des païens,
26 and so all Israel will be saved; as it is written, "The Deliverer will come from Zion, he will banish ungodliness from Jacob";	26 et ainsi tout Israël sera sauvé, comme il est écrit: De Sion viendra le Libérateur, il ôtera lesimpiétés du milieu de Jacob.
27 "and this will be my covenant with them when I take away their sins."	27 Et voici quelle sera mon alliance avec eux lorsque j'enlèverai leurs péchés.
28 As regards the gospel they are enemies of God, for your sake; but as regards election they are beloved for the sake of their forefathers.	28 Ennemis, il est vrai, selon l'Evangile, à cause de vous, ils sont, selon l'Election, chéris à cause deleurs pères.
29 For the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable.	29 Car les dons et l'appel de Dieu sont sans repentance.
30 Just as you were once disobedient to God but now have received mercy because of their disobedience,	30 En effet, de même que jadis vous avez désobéi à Dieu et qu'au temps présent vous avez obtenumiséricorde grâce à leur désobéissance,
31 so they have now been disobedient in order that by the mercy shown to you they also may receive mercy.	31 eux de même au temps présent ont désobéi grâce à la miséricorde exercée envers vous, afinqu'eux aussi ils obtiennent au temps présent miséricorde.
32 For God has consigned all men to disobedience, that he may have mercy upon all.	32 Car Dieu a enfermé tous les hommes dans la désobéissance pour faire à tous miséricorde.
33 O the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!	33 O abîme de la richesse, de la sagesse et de la science de Dieu! Que ses décrets sont insondableset ses voies incompréhensibles!
34 "For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?"	34 Qui en effet a jamais connu la pensée du Seigneur? Qui en fut jamais le conseiller?
35 "Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid?"	35 Ou bien qui l'a prévenu de ses dons pour devoir être payé de retour?
36 For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory for ever. Amen.	36 Car tout est de lui et par lui et pour lui. A lui soit la gloire éternellement! Amen.
