1 And the high priest said, "Is this so?"	1 Le grand prêtre lui demanda: "Les choses sont-elles ainsi?”
2 And Stephen said: "Brethren and fathers, hear me. The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham, when he was in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Haran,	2 Il répondit: "Frères et pères, écoutez! Le Dieu de gloire est apparu à notre père Abraham quand il était en Mésopotamie, avant qu’il n’aille vivre à Harrân.
3 and said to him, 'Depart from your land and from your kindred and go into the land which I will show you.'	3 Il lui a dit: Quitte ton pays et ta parenté et va vers la terre que je te donnerai.
4 Then he departed from the land of the Chaldeans, and lived in Haran. And after his father died, God removed him from there into this land in which you are now living;	4 C’est alors qu’il a quitté la Kaldée pour vivre à Harrân. “Après la mort de son père, Dieu l’a fait émigrer vers le pays où vous habitez à présent.
5 yet he gave him no inheritance in it, not even a foot's length, but promised to give it to him in possession and to his posterity after him, though he had no child.	5 Il ne lui a donné aucun domaine en ce pays, pas même de quoi poser son pied, mais il lui a promis cette terre: il devait la lui donner en propriété, comme à sa descendance après lui. Mais de fait il était sans enfants.
6 And God spoke to this effect, that his posterity would be aliens in a land belonging to others, who would enslave them and ill-treat them four hundred years.	6 “Dieu lui a parlé ainsi: Tes descendants vivront tels des émigrés sur une terre étrangère. Durant 400 ans ils seront maltraités et feront un travail d’esclaves.
7 'But I will judge the nation which they serve,' said God, 'and after that they shall come out and worship me in this place.'	7 Mais, dit encore Dieu, je jugerai la nation qui les aura maintenus en servitude. Après quoi ils en sortiront et viendront m’adorer en ce lieu.”
8 And he gave him the covenant of circumcision. And so Abraham became the father of Isaac, and circumcised him on the eighth day; and Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob of the twelve patriarchs.	8 “C’est à lui que Dieu a donné l’alliance de la circoncision. Après avoir engendré Isaac, il le circoncit le huitième jour; Isaac a fait de même pour Jacob, et Jacob pour les douze patriarches.
9 "And the patriarchs, jealous of Joseph, sold him into Egypt; but God was with him,	9 “Les patriarches devinrent jaloux de Joseph et le firent emmener en Égypte. Mais Dieu était avec lui:
10 and rescued him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favor and wisdom before Pharaoh, king of Egypt, who made him governor over Egypt and over all his household.	10 il le libéra de toutes ses épreuves et lui donna grâce et sagesse aux yeux de Pharaon, roi d’Égypte. Celui-ci fit de lui le gouverneur de l’Égypte et de toute sa propre maison.
11 Now there came a famine throughout all Egypt and Canaan, and great affliction, and our fathers could find no food.	11 Survint une famine en Égypte et en Canaan; l’épreuve fut telle que nos pères ne trouvaient plus à manger.
12 But when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent forth our fathers the first time.	12 Jacob apprit qu’il y avait du blé en Égypte et il y envoya nos pères une première fois.
13 And at the second visit Joseph made himself known to his brothers, and Joseph's family became known to Pharaoh.	13 C’est à la deuxième fois que Joseph se fit reconnaître de ses frères. Le Pharaon connut alors la race de Joseph.
14 And Joseph sent and called to him Jacob his father and all his kindred, seventy-five souls;	14 Puis Joseph fit appeler son père Jacob et toute sa famille, au nombre de 75 personnes.
15 and Jacob went down into Egypt. And he died, himself and our fathers,	15 Jacob descendit en Égypte et il y mourut, nos pères également.
16 and they were carried back to Shechem and laid in the tomb that Abraham had bought for a sum of silver from the sons of Hamor in Shechem.	16 On les fit ramener à Sichem et déposer dans le sépulcre qu’Abraham avait acheté à prix d’argent aux fils de Hamor, à Sichem.
17 "But as the time of the promise drew near, which God had granted to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt	17 “Le terme approchait pour la promesse que Dieu avait jurée à Abraham. Le peuple se développait et foisonnait en Égypte
18 till there arose over Egypt another king who had not known Joseph.	18 lorsque arriva un autre roi qui ne connaissait pas Joseph.
19 He dealt craftily with our race and forced our fathers to expose their infants, that they might not be kept alive.	19 Il vit notre race d’un mauvais œil et fit tout pour nuire à nos pères, leur faisant abandonner leurs bébés pour qu’ils n’aient plus de descendance.
20 At this time Moses was born, and was beautiful before God. And he was brought up for three months in his father's house;	20 C’est à ce moment que Moïse est né, celui qui était cher à Dieu. Durant trois mois il fut élevé dans la maison de son père,
21 and when he was exposed, Pharaoh's daughter adopted him and brought him up as her own son.	21 et quand on l’exposa, il fut recueilli par la fille de Pharaon qui l’éleva comme son fils.
22 And Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and he was mighty in his words and deeds.	22 Moïse fut instruit de tout le savoir des Égyptiens: il était très doué pour la parole et pour l’action.
23 "When he was forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren, the sons of Israel.	23 “Il avait déjà passé l’âge de quarante ans lorsque l’idée lui vint de visiter ses frères, les fils d’Israël.
24 And seeing one of them being wronged, he defended the oppressed man and avenged him by striking the Egyptian.	24 Voyant comment on maltraitait l’un d’eux, il voulut le défendre et rendit la pareille à celui qui abusait de lui: il fit périr l’Égyptien.
25 He supposed that his brethren understood that God was giving them deliverance by his hand, but they did not understand.	25 “Ses frères allaient-ils comprendre que par sa main Dieu leur offrait le salut? Moïse le croyait. De fait ils ne comprirent pas.
26 And on the following day he appeared to them as they were quarreling and would have reconciled them, saying, 'Men, you are brethren, why do you wrong each other?'	26 Le jour suivant il les vit qui se battaient entre eux et il essaya de ramener la paix: “Vous êtes frères!” leur dit-il, “pourquoi vous faire du mal l’un à l’autre?
27 But the man who was wronging his neighbor thrust him aside, saying, 'Who made you a ruler and a judge over us?	27 Mais celui qui maltraitait son prochain s’y refusa: Qui t’a fait notre chef ou notre juge?
28 Do you want to kill me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?'	28 Veux-tu me tuer comme tu as tué hier l’Égyptien?
29 At this retort Moses fled, and became an exile in the land of Midian, where he became the father of two sons.	29 En entendant cela, Moïse prit la fuite et s’en alla demeurer au pays de Madian. Là il eut deux fils.
30 "Now when forty years had passed, an angel appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, in a flame of fire in a bush.	30 “Quarante ans déjà s’étaient écoulés lorsque, dans le désert du mont Sinaï, un ange lui apparut dans les flammes d’un buisson en feu.
31 When Moses saw it he wondered at the sight; and as he drew near to look, the voice of the Lord came,	31 Moïse fut très intrigué par ce qu’il voyait. Comme il s’approchait pour mieux se rendre compte, il y eut une voix du Seigneur:
32 'I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham and of Isaac and of Jacob.' And Moses trembled and did not dare to look.	32 Je suis le Dieu de tes pères, le Dieu d’Abraham, d’Isaac et de Jacob. Moïse ressentait une telle crainte qu’il n’osait plus regarder.
33 And the Lord said to him, 'Take off the shoes from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.	33 le Seigneur lui dit alors: Enlève les sandales que tu as aux pieds, car le lieu où tu te trouves est une terre sainte.
34 I have surely seen the ill-treatment of my people that are in Egypt and heard their groaning, and I have come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send you to Egypt.'	34 J’ai vu comment on maltraite mon peuple en Égypte, j’ai entendu leurs gémissements et je suis descendu pour les délivrer. Va, je te renvoie en Égypte.
35 "This Moses whom they refused, saying, 'Who made you a ruler and a judge?' God sent as both ruler and deliverer by the hand of the angel that appeared to him in the bush.	35 “Ce Moïse qu’ils avaient renié, à qui ils avaient dit: “Qui t’a fait chef et juge?” c’était lui que Dieu leur envoyait comme chef et libérateur, avec l’appui de l’ange qui lui était apparu dans le buisson.
36 He led them out, having performed wonders and signs in Egypt and at the Red Sea, and in the wilderness for forty years.	36 C’est lui qui les a fait sortir, qui a opéré signes et prodiges au pays d’Égypte, à la Mer Rouge et au désert durant quarante années.
37 This is the Moses who said to the Israelites, 'God will raise up for you a prophet from your brethren as he raised me up.'	37 C’est ce même Moïse qui a dit aux fils d’Israël: Le Seigneur fera se lever d’entre vos frères un prophète comme moi.
38 This is he who was in the congregation in the wilderness with the angel who spoke to him at Mount Sinai, and with our fathers; and he received living oracles to give to us.	38 C’est lui qui était avec nos pères à l’assemblée du désert, avec l’ange qui lui parlait sur le mont Sinaï; et il a reçu les paroles vivantes pour nous les donner.
39 Our fathers refused to obey him, but thrust him aside, and in their hearts they turned to Egypt,	39 “Nos pères ne voulaient pas l’écouter, ils se rebellaient et ne pensaient qu’à retourner en Égypte.
40 saying to Aaron, 'Make for us gods to go before us; as for this Moses who led us out from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.'	40 Ils dirent même à Aaron: Fais-nous des dieux qui marchent à notre tête, car ce Moïse qui nous a fait sortir d’Égypte, nous ne savons pas ce qui lui est arrivé.
41 And they made a calf in those days, and offered a sacrifice to the idol and rejoiced in the works of their hands.	41 C’est alors qu’ils firent le veau: ils offrirent un sacrifice à l’idole et firent leur bonheur de l’œuvre de leurs mains.
42 But God turned and gave them over to worship the host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets: 'Did you offer to me slain beasts and sacrifices, forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?	42 “Dieu détourna son visage et les laissa rendre un culte à l’armée du ciel, comme il est écrit au livre des Prophètes: M’avez-vous offert victimes et sacrifices durant les quarante années au désert, maison d’Israël?
43 And you took up the tent of Moloch, and the star of the god Rephan, the figures which you made to worship; and I will remove you beyond Babylon.'	43 Vous portiez la tente de Molok et l’étoile de Rafa votre dieu, les images que vous aviez faites pour vous incliner devant elles. C’est pourquoi je vous déménagerai au-delà de Babylone.
44 "Our fathers had the tent of witness in the wilderness, even as he who spoke to Moses directed him to make it, according to the pattern that he had seen.	44 “Nos pères avaient au désert la Tente du Témoignage; celui qui parlait à Moïse lui avait ordonné de la faire selon le modèle qu’il avait vu.
45 Our fathers in turn brought it in with Joshua when they dispossessed the nations which God thrust out before our fathers. So it was until the days of David,	45 Après l’avoir reçue, nos pères l’introduisirent avec Josué quand ils dépossédèrent les nations que Dieu chassait devant eux. Rien ne changea jusqu’au temps de David.
46 who found favor in the sight of God and asked leave to find a habitation for the God of Jacob.	46 David jouissait de la faveur de Dieu et voulut lui procurer un lieu de repos dans la maison de Jacob.
47 But it was Solomon who built a house for him.	47 De fait, ce fut Salomon qui lui construisit ce Temple.
48 Yet the Most High does not dwell in houses made with hands; as the prophet says,	48 “Mais le Très-Haut n’habite pas des constructions humaines; le prophète l’a dit:
49 'Heaven is my throne, and earth my footstool. What house will you build for me, says the Lord, or what is the place of my rest?	49 Le ciel est mon trône et la terre est mon marchepied; quelle maison pourriez-vous me construire? dit le Seigneur. Ai-je besoin d’un lieu de repos?
50 Did not my hand make all these things?'	50 N’est-ce pas ma main qui a fait tout cela?
51 "You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so do you.	51 “Mais vraiment vous avez la nuque raide! La circoncision n’a pas touché vos cœurs ni vos oreilles, et toujours vous résistez à l’Esprit Saint. Vous faites exactement comme vos pères:
52 Which of the prophets did not your fathers persecute? And they killed those who announced beforehand the coming of the Righteous One, whom you have now betrayed and murdered,	52 quel est le prophète qu’ils n’ont pas persécuté? Ils ont tué ceux qui annonçaient la mort du Juste, et c’est vous maintenant qui l’avez livré et tué.
53 you who received the law as delivered by angels and did not keep it."	53 Déjà vous aviez reçu une loi préparée par les anges, et vous ne l’avez pas observée!”
54 Now when they heard these things they were enraged, and they ground their teeth against him.	54 En entendant ces paroles d’Étienne, ils frémissaient de rage contre lui et grinçaient des dents.
55 But he, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God;	55 C’est alors qu’Étienne fut rempli de l’Esprit Saint, il leva son regard vers le ciel et il vit Jésus siégeant à la droite de Dieu.
56 and he said, "Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing at the right hand of God."	56 Il s’écria: "Je vois les cieux ouverts et le Fils de l’Homme placé à la droite de Dieu!”
57 But they cried out with a loud voice and stopped their ears and rushed together upon him.	57 Ils se bouchèrent les oreilles et commencèrent à pousser de grands cris. Tous ensemble ils se jetèrent sur lui.
58 Then they cast him out of the city and stoned him; and the witnesses laid down their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul.	58 On le conduisit hors de la ville et on commença à lui jeter des pierres. Les témoins avaient déposé leurs vêtements aux pieds d’un jeune homme du nom de Saul.
59 And as they were stoning Stephen, he prayed, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit."	59 Pendant qu’on le tuait à coups de pierres, Étienne faisait cette prière: "Seigneur Jésus, reçois mon esprit.”
60 And he knelt down and cried with a loud voice, "Lord, do not hold this sin against them." And when he had said this, he fell asleep.	60 Il se mit à genoux et cria d’une voix forte: "Seigneur, ne leur tiens pas compte de ce péché!” Après quoi il s’endormit dans le Seigneur.
