1 And the high priest said, "Is this so?"	1 El Sumo Sacerdote preguntó: «¿Es así?»
2 And Stephen said: "Brethren and fathers, hear me. The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham, when he was in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Haran,	2 El respondió: «Hermanos y padres, escuchad. El Dios de la gloria se apareció a nuestro padre Abraham cuando estaba en Mesopotamia, antes de que se estableciese en Jarán
3 and said to him, 'Depart from your land and from your kindred and go into the land which I will show you.'	3 y le dijo: Sal de tu tierra y de tu parentela y vete a la tierra que yo te muestre.
4 Then he departed from the land of the Chaldeans, and lived in Haran. And after his father died, God removed him from there into this land in which you are now living;	4 Entonces salió de la tierra de los caldeos y se estableció en Jarán. Y después de morir su padre, Dios le hizo emigrar de allí a esta tierra que vosotros habitáis ahora.
5 yet he gave him no inheritance in it, not even a foot's length, but promised to give it to him in possession and to his posterity after him, though he had no child.	5 Y no le dio en ella en heredad ni la medida de la planta del pie; sino que prometió dársela en posesión a él y a su descendencia después de él, aunque no tenía ningún hijo.
6 And God spoke to this effect, that his posterity would be aliens in a land belonging to others, who would enslave them and ill-treat them four hundred years.	6 Dios habló así: Tus descendientes residirán como forasteros en tierra extraña y les esclavizarán y les maltratarán durante cuatrocientos años.
7 'But I will judge the nation which they serve,' said God, 'and after that they shall come out and worship me in this place.'	7 Pero yo juzgaré - dijo Dios - a la nación a la que sirvan como esclavos, y después saldrán y me darán culto en este mismo lugar.
8 And he gave him the covenant of circumcision. And so Abraham became the father of Isaac, and circumcised him on the eighth day; and Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob of the twelve patriarchs.	8 Le dio, además, la alianza de la circuncisión; y así, al engendrar a Isaac, Abraham le circuncidó el octavo día, y lo mismo Isaac a Jacob, y Jacob a los doce patriarcas.
9 "And the patriarchs, jealous of Joseph, sold him into Egypt; but God was with him,	9 «Los patriarcas, envidiosos de José, le vendieron con destino a Egipto. Pero Dios estaba con él
10 and rescued him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favor and wisdom before Pharaoh, king of Egypt, who made him governor over Egypt and over all his household.	10 y le libró de todas sus tribulaciones y le dio gracia y sabiduría ante Faraón, rey de Egipto, quien le nombró gobernador de Egipto y de toda su casa.
11 Now there came a famine throughout all Egypt and Canaan, and great affliction, and our fathers could find no food.	11 Sobrevino entonces en todo Egipto y Canaán hambre y gran tribulación; nuestros padres no encontraban víveres.
12 But when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent forth our fathers the first time.	12 Pero al oír Jacob que había trigo en Egipto, envió a nuestros padres una primera vez;
13 And at the second visit Joseph made himself known to his brothers, and Joseph's family became known to Pharaoh.	13 la segunda vez José se dio a conocer a sus hermanos y conoció Faraón el linaje de José.
14 And Joseph sent and called to him Jacob his father and all his kindred, seventy-five souls;	14 José envió a buscar a su padre Jacob y a toda su parentela que se componía de 75 personas.
15 and Jacob went down into Egypt. And he died, himself and our fathers,	15 Jacob bajó a Egipto donde murió él y también nuestros padres;
16 and they were carried back to Shechem and laid in the tomb that Abraham had bought for a sum of silver from the sons of Hamor in Shechem.	16 y fueron trasladados a Siquem y depositados en el sepulcro que había comprado Abraham a precio de plata a los hijos de Jamor, padre de Siquem.
17 "But as the time of the promise drew near, which God had granted to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt	17 «Conforme se iba acercando el tiempo de la promesa que Dios había hecho a Abraham, creció el pueblo y se multiplicó en Egipto,
18 till there arose over Egypt another king who had not known Joseph.	18 hasta que se alzó un nuevo rey en Egipto que no se acordó de José.
19 He dealt craftily with our race and forced our fathers to expose their infants, that they might not be kept alive.	19 Obrando astutamente contra nuestro linaje, este rey maltrató a nuestros padres hasta obligarles a exponer sus niños, para que no vivieran.
20 At this time Moses was born, and was beautiful before God. And he was brought up for three months in his father's house;	20 En esta coyuntura nació Moisés, que era hermoso a los ojos de Dios. Durante tres meses fue criado en la casa de su padre;
21 and when he was exposed, Pharaoh's daughter adopted him and brought him up as her own son.	21 después fue expuesto y le recogió la hija de Faraón, quien le crió como hijo suyo.
22 And Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and he was mighty in his words and deeds.	22 Moisés fue educado en toda la sabiduría de los egipcios y fue poderoso en sus palabras y en sus obras.
23 "When he was forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren, the sons of Israel.	23 «Cuando cumplió la edad de cuarenta años, se le ocurrió la idea de visitar a sus hermanos, los hijos de Israel.
24 And seeing one of them being wronged, he defended the oppressed man and avenged him by striking the Egyptian.	24 Y al ver que uno de ellos era maltratado, tomó su defensa y vengó al oprimido matando al egipcio.
25 He supposed that his brethren understood that God was giving them deliverance by his hand, but they did not understand.	25 Pensaba él que sus hermanos comprenderían que Dios les daría la salvación por su mano; pero ellos no lo comprendieron.
26 And on the following day he appeared to them as they were quarreling and would have reconciled them, saying, 'Men, you are brethren, why do you wrong each other?'	26 Al día siguiente se les presentó mientras estaban peleándose y trataba de ponerles en paz diciendo: “Amigos, que sois hermanos, ¿por qué os maltratáis uno a otro?”
27 But the man who was wronging his neighbor thrust him aside, saying, 'Who made you a ruler and a judge over us?	27 Pero el que maltrataba a su compañero le rechazó diciendo: “¿Quién te ha nombrado jefe y juez sobre nosotros?
28 Do you want to kill me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?'	28 ¿Es que quieres matarme a mí como mataste ayer al egipcio? =“
29 At this retort Moses fled, and became an exile in the land of Midian, where he became the father of two sons.	29 Al oír esto Moisés huyó y vivió como forastero en la tierra de Madián, donde tuvo dos hijos.
30 "Now when forty years had passed, an angel appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, in a flame of fire in a bush.	30 «Al cabo de cuarenta años se le apareció un ángel en el desierto del monte Sinaí, sobre la llama de una zarza ardiendo.
31 When Moses saw it he wondered at the sight; and as he drew near to look, the voice of the Lord came,	31 Moisés se maravilló al ver la visión, y al acercarse a mirarla, se dejó oír la voz del Señor:
32 'I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham and of Isaac and of Jacob.' And Moses trembled and did not dare to look.	32 “Yo soy el Dios de tus padres, el Dios de Abraham, de Isaac y de Jacob.” Moisés temblaba y no se atrevía a mirar.
33 And the Lord said to him, 'Take off the shoes from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.	33 El Señor le dijo: “Quítate las sandalias de los pies, pues el lugar donde estás es tierra santa.
34 I have surely seen the ill-treatment of my people that are in Egypt and heard their groaning, and I have come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send you to Egypt.'	34 Bien vista tengo la opresión de mi pueblo que está en Egipto y he oído sus gemidos y he bajado a librarles. Y ahora ven, que te enviaré a Egipto.”
35 "This Moses whom they refused, saying, 'Who made you a ruler and a judge?' God sent as both ruler and deliverer by the hand of the angel that appeared to him in the bush.	35 «A este Moisés, de quien renegaron diciéndole: ¿quién te ha nombrado jefe y juez?, a éste envió Dios como jefe y redentor por mano del ángel que se le apareció en la zarza.
36 He led them out, having performed wonders and signs in Egypt and at the Red Sea, and in the wilderness for forty years.	36 Este les sacó, realizando prodigios y señales en la tierra de Egipto, en el mar Rojo y en el desierto durante cuarenta años.
37 This is the Moses who said to the Israelites, 'God will raise up for you a prophet from your brethren as he raised me up.'	37 Este es el Moisés que dijo a los israelitas: Dios os suscitará un profeta como yo de entre vuestros hermanos.
38 This is he who was in the congregation in the wilderness with the angel who spoke to him at Mount Sinai, and with our fathers; and he received living oracles to give to us.	38 Este es el que, en la asamblea del desierto, estuvo con el ángel que le hablaba en el monte Sinaí, y con nuestros padres; el que recibió palabras de vida para comunicárnoslas;
39 Our fathers refused to obey him, but thrust him aside, and in their hearts they turned to Egypt,	39 este es aquel a quien no quisieron obedecer nuestros padres, sino que le rechazaron para volver su corazón hacia Egipto,
40 saying to Aaron, 'Make for us gods to go before us; as for this Moses who led us out from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.'	40 y dijeron a Aarón: “Haznos dioses que vayan delante de nosotros; porque este Moisés que nos sacó de la tierra de Egipto no sabemos qué ha sido de él.”
41 And they made a calf in those days, and offered a sacrifice to the idol and rejoiced in the works of their hands.	41 E hicieron aquellos días un becerro y ofrecieron un sacrificio al ídolo e hicieron una fiesta a las obras de sus manos.
42 But God turned and gave them over to worship the host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets: 'Did you offer to me slain beasts and sacrifices, forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?	42 Entonces Dios se apartó de ellos y los entregó al culto del ejército del cielo, como está escrito en el libro de los Profetas: ¿Es que me ofrecisteis víctimas y sacrificios durante cuarenta años en el desierto, casa de Israel?
43 And you took up the tent of Moloch, and the star of the god Rephan, the figures which you made to worship; and I will remove you beyond Babylon.'	43 Os llevasteis la tienda de Moloc y la estrella del dios Refán, las imágenes que hicisteis para adorarlas; pues yo os llevaré más allá de Babilonia.
44 "Our fathers had the tent of witness in the wilderness, even as he who spoke to Moses directed him to make it, according to the pattern that he had seen.	44 «Nuestros padres tenían en el desierto la Tienda del Testimonio, como mandó el que dijo a Moisés que la hiciera según el modelo que había visto.
45 Our fathers in turn brought it in with Joshua when they dispossessed the nations which God thrust out before our fathers. So it was until the days of David,	45 Nuestros padres que les sucedieron la recibieron y la introdujeron bajo el mando de Josué en el país ocupado por los gentiles, a los que Dios expulsó delante de nuestros padres, hasta los días de David,
46 who found favor in the sight of God and asked leave to find a habitation for the God of Jacob.	46 que halló gracia ante Dios y pidió encontrar una Morada para la casa de Jacob.
47 But it was Solomon who built a house for him.	47 Pero fue Salomón el que le edificó Casa,
48 Yet the Most High does not dwell in houses made with hands; as the prophet says,	48 aunque el Altísimo no habita en casas hechas por mano de hombre como dice el profeta:
49 'Heaven is my throne, and earth my footstool. What house will you build for me, says the Lord, or what is the place of my rest?	49 El cielo es mi trono y la tierra el escabel de mis pies. Dice el Señor: ¿Qué Casa me edificaréis? O ¿cuál será el lugar de mi descanso?
50 Did not my hand make all these things?'	50 ¿Es que no ha hecho mi mano todas estas cosas?
51 "You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so do you.	51 «¡Duros de cerviz, incircuncisos de corazón y de oídos! ¡Vosotros siempre resistís al Espíritu Santo! ¡Como vuestros padres, así vosotros!
52 Which of the prophets did not your fathers persecute? And they killed those who announced beforehand the coming of the Righteous One, whom you have now betrayed and murdered,	52 ¿A qué profeta no persiguieron vuestros padres? Ellos mataron a los que anunciaban de antemano la venida del Justo, de aquel a quien vosotros ahora habéis traicionado y asesinado;
53 you who received the law as delivered by angels and did not keep it."	53 vosotros que recibisteis la Ley por mediación de ángeles y no la habéis guardado».
54 Now when they heard these things they were enraged, and they ground their teeth against him.	54 Al oír esto, sus corazones se consumían de rabia y rechinaban sus dientes contra él.
55 But he, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God;	55 Pero él, lleno del Espíritu Santo, miró fijamente al cielo y vio la gloria de Dios y a Jesús que estaba en pie a la diestra de Dios;
56 and he said, "Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing at the right hand of God."	56 y dijo: «Estoy viendo los cielos abiertos y al Hijo del hombre que está en pie a la diestra de Dios».
57 But they cried out with a loud voice and stopped their ears and rushed together upon him.	57 Entonces, gritando fuertemente, se taparon sus oídos y se precipitaron todos a una sobre él;
58 Then they cast him out of the city and stoned him; and the witnesses laid down their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul.	58 le echaron fuera de la ciudad y empezaron a apedrearle. Los testigos pusieron sus vestidos a los pies de un joven llamado Saulo.
59 And as they were stoning Stephen, he prayed, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit."	59 Mientras le apedreaban, Esteban hacía esta invocación: «Señor Jesús, recibe mi espíritu».
60 And he knelt down and cried with a loud voice, "Lord, do not hold this sin against them." And when he had said this, he fell asleep.	60 Después dobló las rodillas y dijo con fuerte voz: «Señor, no les tengas en cuenta este pecado». Y diciendo esto, se durmió.
